Mark Stewart didn't want to pay the $1,000 delivery fee for his Organic Transit electric bicycle/car hybrid, so he decided to drive/pedal it from North Carolina to Massachusetts. Jim Motavalli encountered him in Darien, Connecticut.

In the last 4 years there have been 400 improvements to the ELF design. 1000 have been sold. 4 million road miles logged. Of 16 known car/ELF collisions there have been no driver injuries yet, this is the safest bike ever made!

Who cares. The basis for grasping what the vehicle is, and is not, is clarified by the legal description.

We love our ELF's we have number's #83 #186 #543 and we are based in Braintree,MA they are a handful though when it comes to doing repairs and maintenance though but we would never get rid of them as they were donated to us by previous owners

I want to do the east coast greenway on an elf. I had some questions. What software did you use to plan the trip? How did you handle charging when needed? Did you upgrade your battery? Do you have the 11 ah 48 v battery?

depend on context: linguistically, bi - 2, tri - 3, cycle = wheel; legally,.. look up DOT legislation. It's that simple.

currishev My thoughts entirely. But at 0:30 he says bicycle a few times. Why don't they call it a cycle or tricycle? I have noticed, in other videos people talk about bicyclists as a general term. To me, cyclists might better because if you are riding a tricycle that should make you a tricyclist. :) In UK a bicycle always has two wheels never three. :)

+NowAndThen_EH89JW The Federal government allows pedal powered tricycles to be sold as bicycles, but state laws may define a bicycle in the traditional sense, which is a human powered vehicle with two tandem wheels. It is the state laws that determine whether it is legal to operate the vehicle on the roadways.

That's my state, it specifically defines a bicycle as two wheels in tandem with one being larger then 20". That makes the following non-vehicles and as such not road legal. Tricycle, Delta - one wheel front two back Tricycle, Tadpole - two front one back Dicycles - two wheels side by side with people in between Monowheels - person seated inside of one wheel Quadracycles - four wheeled bicycles (different class from pedal cars) Most folding bicycles as their wheels are often 20" or smaller All of these were common designs from the 1860's to 1940's. Some faded into obscurity post WWII, occasionally seeing a short lived revival before fading back again. >begin sarcasm< Isn't it amazing how much more diversity in transport we have now. >end sarcasm

Federal law defines this as a bicycle.

It isn't a bicycle because it has three wheels. In some states, it would be classified as a moped. I would think that could make life interesting if you live in a state that doesn't require the ELF to be registered and then you decide to drive it through a state where it is a moped and must be registered.

Mikey B The US Federal law only applies to the SALE of vehicles, it has no bearing on the legal use of vehicles. For that, you have to look at the state laws, since they are the laws that regulate what may be used on the roadways. In Texas, bicycles have only two wheels. In some states, it is legal to use an unregistered tricycle on the roads, but only if there is one wheel in front and two on the back. The ELF has the two wheels on the front, so is not legal in those states.

TechWizPC Again, that depends on the state. Some state laws have no special designation for tricycles, so a tricycle that doesn't meet the definition of a bicycle that the state is using would fall into another category.

+Timothy Fish My understanding is that if the top speed of the electric motor is 20 mph or less, it cannot be classified as a moped.
