We followed 4014's journey from California to Cheyenne. The crew did a fantastic job-not only in bringing Big-Boy home, but also for their incredible PR work with all the Steam Fans and the general public-along the way. Even the Highway Patrol folks, were caught-up in the moment/s and displayed much consideration for the 'Train-Chasers! Thank you again Union Pacific, and all of you who have, and who are making this restoration effort possible!

I am speechless! UP has pulled off an incredible coup. The Rail -World is watching and is really fired-up. Thank you UP and the folks at Rail Giants Museum who took such great care of this locomotive.

I wish I would have been alive in the days when these steam locomotives were used. The hauntingly beautiful sound of the whistles makes you feel that chill down to the bones. They were truly amazing as they were built and machined by hand. Simply beutiful machines. You video of this is great!!!!

I was here to witness it. In fact, I can see a young me standing next to my grandfather. We still haven't seen 4014 in operation yet, unfortunately. But hopefully we will this year

Thanks Nick. I lived in cheyenne for many years and saw 844 and 3975 many times.

I'd love to be there in Cheyenne the moment 4014 is running under it's own power again. Gotta him since I've seen 3985 and 844 in person. Never hurts to see them again and again.

For the 13-14 years I've lived in Pomona and have gone to the fair I'm sad to say I've never actually seen 4014 in person. If I have it was never up close and from a distance.(although I've heard it several hundred times) I remember seeing and hearing the DDA40X Nicknamed Centennial or Big Jack. But I've never been really up close to 4014. Sad to see it leave but happy that it's being worked on. Nice video!

I was looking at her one day several years ago, and a man had come all the way from Australia to see her. I was so impressed. It was only because of the work on her by the dedicated volunteers over the years that kept her in good enough shape to be restored. My hat has always been off to them. I know they had mixed feelings, hated to see her go, but happy she would be running the rails again.

That Big Boy whistle will sound _lots_ better when it's using hot steam instead of cold compressed air! Then . . . Hold your ears!

The deeper horn or whistle sound - is that from the Big Boy or one of the diesels?

A beautiful locomotive to look at, although the footplate is overwhelming. I know the locomotive has automatic auger to feed the coal into the firebox and the fireman control the coal rate by using the hand lever w/o hand shoveling the coal. It,s to much for an big locomotive like BIG BOY 4014.

Ya. And being cold my tripod was sticking. The wind didn't help. I tried my best to work it smooth but it just had to stick and the wind made it bounce. I had to hold it down to get it smoother when zoomed

Just wish they had of had 844 bring her in, that would have been awsome. Down hill all the way from Sherman so would have been no great strain.
@NicksCollectableCreations10 жыл бұрын
It would have been pretty cool. I guess though since Ed and the steam crew was (mostly) in Ca, they just didn't have anyone to operate the 844.

Why not remove the side rods? Then no need to lubricate the sliding piston rod guides. If not under steam, how is any of that lubricated? Or does air pressure operate lubricating pumps? From where was the air pressure obtained? Interesting that the whistle is a lower pitch on air than on steam.
@NicksCollectableCreations10 жыл бұрын
One of my big boy update videos, I mentioned that the old steam crew guys had made a similar comment. They didn't understand why the "new" guys were taking so long, and doing what amounted to a partial restoration before bringing the Big Boy home. "In the old days, we'd take the rods off and drag it back home" was the quote I heard. Anyway, My only guess was they did this for appearances only. I think the oiling pumps were powered by the air compressor which was mounted on the tender. I remember watching one of SteamUP's videos awhile ago of the 3985 returning to cheyenne from nebraska, on one of its last runs, and it mentioned in the video that it was fitted with the Big Boy whistle. I don't remember which one but I thought it was the 4023.
@robertgift10 жыл бұрын
Nick White Wow! Yes, you can't just take the rods off or the counterweights will greatly unbalance the wheels if you travel at a reasonable speed. Such likely will damage bearings with repetitive unequal stresses. Unfortunately we must get mechanical engineers involved in all of this if such is altered.
@NicksCollectableCreations10 жыл бұрын
Robert Gift I found out today during my visit of the Big Boy, that the rods drive the oil pumps which feed the main bearings, and this is why they did not remove the rods. Just wanted to let ya know.
@robertgift10 жыл бұрын
Nick White ^ Thank you, Nick.
@cartersol389 жыл бұрын
The drive wheels are balanced for the side-rods and the rest of the 'motion' being "in place." Another good reason to keep the towing-speed at an acceptable level. Removing the side rods, would create enormous problems while being towed, and an untold amount of damage could result.
