Business tycoon Philip Upali Wijewardene, whose full name is Philip Upali Wijewardene, lived in Sri Lanka from 17 February 1938 to 13 February 1983. Wijewardene, one of Sri Lanka's most well-known businessmen, amassed a net worth of $50 million by 1983. The first multinational company in Sri Lanka, Upali Group, which has operations in the US, UK, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and Hong Kong, was founded by him and he served as its chairman.[1] The Upali Group expanded beyond confectionery to include publishing, print media, aviation, electronics and vehicle production. According to Insight Magazine UK, it created a number of brands, including Kandos, Delta, Unic, Upali Air, Upali Mazda, and Upali Newspapers, which were "largely achieved through bravado and wit."[2]
When Upali Wijewardene's private Learjet vanished on February 13, 1983, it was assumed that he had passed away.
