I think Upchurch has a great voice for the dark story in the lyrics. I've sang this song since I was tiny because it is a bluegrass and folk anthem. My faves to cover it were Loretta Lynn and Laura Pergolizzi. Now Upchurch has taken the top slot. The history of this song is so unique also. To not know who originally wrote it, but have it be brought to fame shortly after the civil war by Lead Belly and then to consistently watch it be performed by artists yet still maintain its integrity. It is a very unique song that holds its own recognition no matter who sings it...but Upchurch just did this song justice! Amazing job!
