Hello, it's Thursday! This week I'm upcycling an old bedsheet to make it into a fancy new textured blanket perfect for a chair or the end of your bed.
I start by working out how to make fabric yarn out of it, and then engage in a big game of yarn chicken - but will I win?
Get access to all my KZfaq written patterns on Patreon:

Or show me photos of your finished creations on instagram:

I also have an Etsy for anyone looking to support the channel, but I do keep most of my patterns free here on KZfaq:

I love the fact that you turned a blanket with holes into a blanket with holes lol. And that you, like me, were unwilling to part with something just because it was a little damaged lol.

Fabric scrap bits make good stuffing for amigurmi, especially if it's a test piece for pattern development or something that won't need washed often. I only stuff polyfill for toys but display stuff for teens/adults get yarn and fabric scraps a lot. Much easier to stuff firm without the spring back.

✂️ Here’s a tip to save you from sore “scissors hand.” Just nick the fabric every inch or so with scissors, and then tear it into long strips at each nick. The downside is that you’ll end up with long stray strings from the fraying sides, but this is better than the tiny fraying strings in the wash from uneven scissor cuts.

Upcycling is neat!!! I saw some crocheters make some cool stuff with yarn made of sheets, jeans, plastics bags, etc...into: rugs, pillow, pillows for pets, toys for pets, bags, sleeveless - vest ..the limit is the your creativity!!! Nice video!

Being resistant to throwing out soft, well-loved sheets, I love this idea! The finished product looks good in those two photos. I rip my sheets into hankies to carry in my pocket. They’re so soft and come in handy!

Oh, this is just the best idea!! I have an old blanket I loved as a child that’s totally worn out (my parents got it as a wedding gift almost 50 years ago) and just happened to find another at a thrift store. I’ve been so bummed because I had no idea what to do with them, but this will give them new life!! Thank you big bunches!!🥰🎉

What a wonderful idea! I've seen something similar with plastic grocery bags. They cut them all up the way u did the sheets & made a sturdier 'recycled' plastic bag/tote with all of the plastic. I have a bunch of old sheets that I wanted to make an oval rug out of for my kitchen. I literally *fear* ovals bc they tend to buckle on me no matter what I do. There must be a 'perfect' oval rug pattern out there somewhere :)

I wanted to try that, but then they banned plastic bags here 😂

@lavender, we have a bunch of old sheets, jeans etcre. I knew what I was going to do with the jeans, make dog toys. As for the sheets, my daughter who doesn't just crochet but who also does quilling, has taught herself knitting, uses polymer clay, now wants to teach herself to use the sewing machine. I can sew as us girls in the 1980s were taught. We did typing lessons as well. I told them I didn't need them as I wasn't going to be a secretary. I can touch type a lot quicker then many of my former nursing colleagues. But there are other things I am sure you can do with old sheets. I'm going to get some of them do some squares and send them off to blankets for the homeless if it's still going. My best friend started it before the pandemic.

I learned about making yarn out of tshirts! It was a great use of the massive amount of Hot Topic tshirts I didn't want anymore. Too worn to resale. So I have like 20 balls of yarn to make something out of.

i have been making yarn from op shop sheets and left off fabric for years. I crochet them into rugs , bags and baskets. i cut them in into 1.5-2 cm wide strips. ripping them, on the weave, on the long side rip almost to the end, then turn make a small cut and rip the other way.

We also use old sheets to cover plants at beginning of end of planting season, to cover the back of our car when we get our tires changed winter/summer, and as dog blankets to make cleaning up fuzzies easier.

You could have cut then in such a way that you only get one long piece 😊 You get that when you go from one loop to the next sideways instead of cutting it out.

cool project !! if it were me, i would've cut the strands of fabric a bit larger than the size you want them to be and i would take the time to sew the long edges of fabric together with my sewing machine, so it makes a sort of tube and it would look like those blankets at ikea or something lol

I did some sheet-to-yarn upcycling recently and I found it worked really well to cut the sheet in just one long big strip. hard to explain in words but the blog "my poppet au" has a good visual diagram for it! search for crochet coil rug. also if your fabric isn't too fray-y, you can snip at the edge and rip across the rest of the way, saves your hands

If you have loops don't cut them just thread 2 loops into one another and pull it will create a smooth knot and no ends, hope this makes sense! 😉

There is a way to cut continuous strips from sheets (without all the knots). Also there is a method of attaching strips together without all the floppy end pieces hanging out. Failure on those aspects. I would only use stretchy (tshirt like) material/sheets for this crochet purpose. But this one might be good for a duvet filler (such as a weighted blanket?) or an absorbent floor mat in front of shower or a comfy dog mat for under dog bed. Not trying to be unkind in ANY way. Plz do not be offended.

Great upcycle! I wanted to do the same kind of thing to an old duvet cover set... I couldn't even cut up one of the pillow cases without painful hand cramps! I still have the covers (just in case) but it's now pretty much at the bottom of my To Do list!

I was foolishly cutting through 8 layers at a time, so I could have avoided some of the pain by...not doing that. Next time I'm going to look at one of those roller cutters though.
