Definitely, considering that they germinate extremely easily (the rambutan and durian) from seed, you’re bound to have plenty of seedlings.

@@TropicalCentralValley by the way, I didn't realize before that you're zone 9b. I thought you were as me at 11. It will be really difficult to keep that durian alive there. I would try and start as many seeds as possible from different species of durian... to find that one abnormality that will make it. Not so often, a weird seedling comes along that for some reason makes it... plant all the seeds you can find.

Totally. Although I’m unsure if the variety shown in the video, I’ve been growing some Montong seedlings and they seem to be doing fine.

You need to provide them with a microclimate to grow them during winter time unless you never experience winters colder than 10°C or 50°F. I have had trouble with growing them in a 10b cold hardiness zone, Jackfruit, papaya, etc will grow there but durian won't unless they're brought indoors or planted in a heated greenhouse during winter time !
@TropicalCentralValley
@TropicalCentralValley 5 ай бұрын
That’s the goal, though only time will tell if they will make it in the coming years.
@TropicalCentralValley
@TropicalCentralValley 5 ай бұрын
I completely agree. Adding to this, even with the best microclimate, they will still need a heat source. A natural microclimate can only do so much, particularly in my climate where we routinely get -3.33°C or 26°F.

Looks good. I can only find frozen durian so I'm sure the seed is dead. My mango tree has not started growing yet. I'm in palm springs. Has yours begun to grow? One more question, do mangos like alkaline soil or acid soil? Thanks
@TropicalCentralValley
@TropicalCentralValley 5 ай бұрын
Thank you. Basically all previously frozen tropical fruits are no longer viable. Concerning the mango, yes, all of mine are growing very nicely, with some even blooming. From my experience, the number one cause of mango death is because of alkaline soil. Here’s a video I did specific to mango: Successfully Plant and Grow Mango Trees in Clay Soil kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sJuejc2lyr7GhoE.html

How can I buy a grafted Mangosteen, or should I ask do they need to be grafted? There are so many sites selling them, but not sure which one's are legit. I was recently scammed when buying a finger lime :(

Unfortunately, I do not sell any of my tropical fruit treeUnfortunately, I do not sell any of my tropical fruit trees, including fruits, seeds, cuttings, etc. I’m not aware of anyone selling them online. The issue with online nurseries is the fact that you don’t get to pick the best tree; for this reason, I recommend stopping by a nearby tropical fruit tree nursery.

Growing is one thing, fruiting is enough. That's why I don't grow star apple
@TropicalCentralValley
@TropicalCentralValley 4 ай бұрын
Yeah, the growing of apples can be challenging. Having said that, beyond the Star, the Sugar, Mountain, Rose, Custard and Wax grow and fruit successfully with some care. Chill hour permitting, beyond the stars, the Cosmic Crisp is universally easier to grow and fruit, even in our galaxy.

You can try making a DIY cool fog humidifier using a 5 gallon bucket with a lid, small fan and fountain foggers. Those put out out a surprisingly high amound of cool fog/mist.
@TropicalCentralValley
@TropicalCentralValley 5 ай бұрын
Thanks for the tip. I may resort to that if I sense they need more humidity. I had plans to install a mister system around the area as an absolute backup. At the same time, I’m trying to slowly acclimate them to our dry heat.

Nice! If you had to start over, what trees would you plant first?
@TropicalCentralValley
@TropicalCentralValley 5 ай бұрын
Thank you. I actually would not plant any tropical fruit trees. Instead, I would plant the trees and plants (e.g. bamboo) that would assist with the creation of a microclimate.

Any recommendations on helping a 2 ft star fruit tree recover from transplant shock?
@TropicalCentralValley
@TropicalCentralValley 5 ай бұрын
I’m told there are some “solutions” you can apply to the roots of newly installed trees, but I’m not confident they actually do anything. That said, I would ensure the tree is protected from the sun, even in March. Aim for morning sun, until around 10am, then full shade for the rest of the day. I would NOT fertilize the tree until you see new growth. My older video here covers this topic: Nursing a Tropical Tree and the Importance of Soil pH and Drainage in the Fresno/Visalia Area kzfaq.info/get/bejne/napmaLdqzarGaaM.html

I tried growing 2 young durian plants in an unheated greenhouse just north of Sydney (Newcastle) in Australia & they died in the middle of winter because I kept them in an unheated greenhouse when it got down to about 5°C overnight & that's despite the greenhouse getting up to 32°C on a 19°C winter day or 28°C on a 17°C winters day inside of the greenhouse. I might need to give them additional heat but will a mature durian tree handle that temperature during winter time even if it's a 10 year old tree ? It is in a 10b cold hardiness zone similar to South Carolina & I was told that they will just die during winter time if they're planted any further south than Mackay in Queensland over here, so it's a bit like trying to grow it further north than Tepic in Mexico !
@TropicalCentralValley

That’s a bummer. This is actually my second attempt at growing durian seedlings. My first durian attempt had succumbed to the cold when my heater malfunctioned and the temperature had dropped down to 2.78°C. In my new attempt, although not shown or mentioned in the video, I am micromanaging the climate heavily. I get alerted anytime the temperature and humidity drops too low.

@@TropicalCentralValley How are you planning on growing your durian plant in 10 years time if it survives ? They're meant to grow into a fairly big tree !
@TropicalCentralValley
@TropicalCentralValley 5 ай бұрын
If need to, erect temporary heated greenhouse around the trees. They grow large in their native climate, but none in mine. That’s one of the advantages of growing them in hostile climates.
