I suspect William that if this were true, no amount of history would convince most people that current horror (freely available for anyone that has access to the internet to see) can ever be justified. Many people don't need to do the mental gymnastics required to justify what is clearly inexcusable no matter how you contextualise it and may just be giving up precious time at weekends because it actually does really matter to them.
