MPC is re-releasing the classic 18 inch Millennium Falcon, with UPDATES AND IMPROVEMENTS.
Finally the sidewalls are changed to be shorter, better proportioned, and detailed. New Han Solo and Chewbaca figures and more.
The kit has decals for you if you don't want to paint all the panels, and a full color guide to use while painting and weathering the ship.
This video is a full unboxing and look at the kit.

I'd say add some scrap styrene strips and rods as well as some other greeblies onto areas like that back deck would really make the kit pop even more. Regardless of accuracy, just have fun making it as you see fit. That's what I enjoy about older kids. They require your imagination to help improve them. Make it your own creation! Too many modelers are sticklers for accuracy and I don't think it's necessary.

I think your side by side comparison convinced me to put the extra money aside for the PG Bandai version. Bandai has very high quality molding technology and they have really put the time into molding all the details. Right down to the point where you can identify what the greibles were. Even the 1/144 scale bandai MF seems to have more detail than this one. I appriciate the review of this! Thank you!

Good to see that after over 40 years the MPC kit finally has the correct proportions and detailing missing when it was first released. Unlike other companies that only screwed up their kits with each re-release and alterations, like the classic AMT 18" U.S.S. Enterprise model where it lost its original correct proportions and details added that only made things worse rather than better, and features, such as the lighting kit that the first pressings came with were dropped to save a few bucks. Even when Polar Lights obtained the kit, nothing was done to really change it other than adding some upscaled from their extremely accurate 1/1000 scale 11 inch Enterprise model decals.

I hear ya, $400 is a hefty sum. But, a moderately improved MPC with only a few added extra details, which, frankly, if they're gonna improve it, go all the way... don't leave blank spots on the side panels and the rear engine details... doesn't really inspire me to want to get it. I built that kit twice as a kid. Once, straight out of the box and a second time, where I did all kinds of customizing, including building a custom cockpit with four seats (again, another missed opportunity) and Ben and Luke figures and Han's steering wheel, lights, etc. The fact that there's one called "Perfect Grade" appeals to everything I hated about that old MPC. But, if you're a kid, today, it's vastly improved for the $$$.

I added resin side parts from a kit to one I was building for my brother in law. Since it was the Empire version, I added the extra seats with Leia and 3PO. Also had to shave down the radar dish as it was too big.

I got a few of the MPC kits shortly after they were released, so I'll assume that was maybe 1978, making me 15 at that time. Even at that naive age, I knew the Falcon looked "off", both the lack of detail upon those recessed side pieces, but also their thickness. I was certainly no master model builder (I'm still not), but even I realized if those pieces were narrowed, the cockpit access "tube" and "cone" would no longer fit, cast as they were at that time. I probably wasn't that conscious of it, but "something" likely alerted me to the fact the convex lens type curvature to the hull pieces was not thick enough, offset by those thick side pieces. I'm both pleased and frankly shocked that Round2 went all this extra effort to modify an existing kit. It likely reaches a point that it would prove easier to generate an all new kit. So I applaud their efforts! I can't recall if I ever completed the kit. I know I gave up working with Vader's TIE Fighter because the two major hull pieces would not align. I did complete both C3PO and R2-D2. I was a bit sad the protocol droid was not electroplated "gold" given R2 had several major pieces in "silver". But I was rather proud of them, never the less.

Built the original when it was first released. Folks got rid of it when I went away to college and the army. Bought new retooled kit and found it has a lot of flashing, especially around the turret laser canon barrels. The detail for the laser canons is nominal and needs special attention. Overall the main hull and side bulkheads aren’t too bad in detail.

I have the original kit in my display cabinet, bought in 1982. I made a few adjustments to it myself, but on the whole this paints up into a beautiful model. The Bandai 'Perfect Grade' averages around $600+ in my neck of the woods, though I've seen it as high as $900. It's absurd and so far beyond my budget, I've never even considered it.

I just wish they had the option for 5 landing gear like in Empire strikes back. I just built the 15 inch revell one and it has options. It comes with all 5 landing gear as well as the original dish and the rectangular one. They also left the old landing gear in it on it's original sprue. But I have this one as well. I'm going to use as terrain, objective, prop for Star Wars Legion. The 15 inch one will work for now, but I intend on using this one once I build and paint it.

My Brother Built one Years ago and I ended up with it when I started building Kit models. I always thought it was 1/72 scale as I'd taken out some Pilots I had from other 1:72 Scale kits and compared the sizes. They were a perfect match. I'm currently building a 1/43 scale de Agostini millennium falcon I picked up magazines and all for $200.

Good work showcasing the changes. I concur with your conclusions. Round 2 did an excellent job. I am curious if they tooled up a new cockpit instrument panel as that was a shortcoming of the original with two pilot seats and no panel. The clear back wall still doesn't look right, but the decal helps a lot. I have a FineMolds which I built about a decade ago and a Bandai. I'll have to decide how to do my R2 kit now. I might do it up as the Stellar Envoy, which was the prequel Falcon that popped up in E3. Doing it as the ship from "Solo" either the clean Lando version or the beat to heck post Kessel Run ship is also a possibility. At this price point, I am more comfortable making changes to this kit than a Bandai. Once again, very good review.

Yeah I actually built this model back in the late seventies when it was first released. And I always remember being very disappointed at the fact that it just didn't look right I always thought those side walls looked a little too thick and it made the engines look too thick as well. Back in those days though we didn't have internet or a lot of resources so you looked at pictures in magazines and that was pretty much it. And this movie was not released on VHS for years after it was released I don't even think it was released until the 90s I think.

Yup, I built the original kit a long time ago under the Airfix branding. It took a lot of extra work to get the details right. Kit-bashing helped. I still have it. Spray painting multiple shades of grey and white was tedious. Sadly, when Jedi came out, we suddenly lost all interest in the franchise. Damn those Teddy Bears. This means that my model was demoted to our spare bedroom, where it sits atop the wardrobe under a heavy layer of dust, behind our suircases. My wife wants me to ditch it, but I just can't bring myself to make the leap. The next time someone asks to buy it, it is gone.

Dollars for a model kit thats just totally ridiculous I can get a fully detailed and well painted diecast model for around the same price or less, And yes I do have many plastic model and very nice resin kits and have never spent more than $80. Dollars or less for them in any way shape or form whatsoever and even that is a little too pricey considering that you have to buy all the paints and supplies and so forth that you need to have to put it all together with as well!.

If you believe this to be ‘a crappy model’ then don’t waste your time & money on it.

I have that original kit. I bought it from a hobby store (Mr. Gameways) in Toronto back in the late 70’s. I still have it but the “radar dish” and the deck guns are somewhat worse for wear. I’ve recently purchased and built the smallest version of Bandai’s Millennium Falcon kit. It was amazingly detailed for something that’s not more that 2” wide. That box artwork is exactly what was offered back then.
