This is the updated How-to USB Tethered on PICO4 using the Android SystemSettings.APK. This is by far the easiest way to do USB Tethering on Windows with PICO4 and completely makes my previous tutorial obsolete.

I followed your first tutorial, which is admittedly a bit complicated for the uninitiated, but this update is perfect. Bravo, the recent VD update is exceptionally efficient. I always have to activate usb tethering in the system settings options before launching VD. and no BSOD. rtx 4090 /I5-13600K very good work.

thank you so much, I followed your instruction, re enable debug in pico settings, and my pico4 tethered is recognised again. Dont know what turned it off , as it used to run no problem. it ran ok stand alone, so thought it can`t be the headset itself. Have subbed, thanks again. ps w11 started to load drivers after that, didn`t need any of the desktop instructions.

glad to know it is working again. Maybe a Pico update disable the USB debugging, that's my only guess.

Hey, it actually works. Thank you very much. I wish I didn't have to do that, though. Despite it working properly the image is still a bit blurry and the delay is noticable (albeit much lower than before). Is it just the case of tweaking the settings? Streaming Assistant works fine, but looks 'meh' (and I didn't spend 20 euros on it).

USB Tethered is more for network jitter (latency) stability, which fluctuates a lot on wifi, aside from that the image quality will remain the same as well as the overall encode, decode and game latency. You could tune your graphics settings to allow better overall encode, decode latency.

Quick question, in order to watch 3D movies and download Steam vr and so on. Are they only possible through connecting toba desktop or i can alsobdo it inside pico 4 head set without have to go through desktop?

Steamvr is only available on your desktop, thus you need to connect to the desktop first. Regarding 3D movies, you could download them straight to the pico headset storage and play it from within pico without going through your desktop.

this method is interesting, but unfortunatly it shut downs my pc network connection for some programs like Steam and even a pc restart was not able to fix it. Only connect the the pico 4 again and deactivate the tethereing while the pico was connected, restore the network connection for my steam account.

One question. When using ethernet adapter, there is no way to charge the PICO simultaneously, right? So if I want to play long multiplayer missions in DCS it's either wifi or bust, right?

i have issues after the latest pico 4 system update , i have to plug usb many times for USB Tethering option to check green most of the time it's greyed out can't even check it . and even when it's checked green in virtual desktop max bitrate is 160 when checking h.264+ option . i tried uninstalling driver of pico 4 changing usb nothing , any idea what's my problem ?

Hello, not sure yet. I have not used my pico in a bit due to some traveling i was doing. I will in a few days and see if there is any issues with tethered after updating my pico 4.

Nuevo Subscritor aqui - Muchas gracias por tus videos son muy buenos. Lo de las bluescreens es una verdadera pena. Comentaste que no usas este metodo? Existe otro metodo? Solo con ethernet? Es una lastima que VD no lo arregle porque es realmente increible y funciona muy bien - hasta que aparece la BSOD

Saludos, yo uso USB to Ethernet, mirate este vid kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gbhgoKWB05vLZYE.html donde muestro el adaptador y los cables que compre, deje links a amazon donde puedes comprarlos. Es el mejor metodo con VD funciona de maravilla.

you could try changing the windows tethered drivers if you experience bluescreens, although I've seen people complaining about BSOD on either driver, and others not having any issues what so ever with the default driver.

One problem. You have to turn tether on everytime because it resets to off when you restart. How do you keep tether on permanently? And is there a better way for VD to detect tether the first time instead of turning wifi on first, then get it to detect tether and then turning it off? Occulus quest was very straight forward.

Hi Jugando, I run my Pico with Ethernet to USB-C and It works. My problem is getting my Xbox Game Pass Copy of MSFS2020 to show in the Virtual Desktop Games Browser. I ran into issues adding MSFS 2020 Gamepass Install in Steam. I see it in Steam Library, but not in VD Games tab. My No Man's Sky Shows up. Streams over Ethernet Beautifully. MSFS 2020 is not nearly as good image quality is my Native Steam Install of No Man's Sky. You've done a lot of VD work. Any thoughts?

there is a way to manually add non-steam vr games to the VD game browser. I have not done it, my recommendation is for you to join the VD discord and ask for help from the support team.

it should show up once you enable USB Tethering within PICO following the steps I showed here. You need to do that every time you want to enable it.

Just got my Pico 4 today and trying this tutorial with a RTX 4090. Whats the difference between USB to Ethernet and this process? Which will give better quality?

hello, there is no difference as far as quality, now, this method "USB Tethered" is not stable and can cause BSOD on some computers. I'd recommend you to go with USB to Ethernet if you can, or stick with Wifi if you have a WIFI 6 router.

@@JugandoRD thank you for your prompt response. I tested it and got a BSOD almost instantly, so gave that up. With the USB to ethernet can you recommend one that supports charging? Also, wondering if you've tried recent VD updates e.g. x264 400 mbps vs HEVC 10 bit etc.

only with the PICO official stream App "Stream Assistant", but this app sucks as far as image quality and latency. Virtual Desktop does not support plug and play USB connection, you need to simulate a network connection over USB "USB Tethered" which is I've explained on this video.

This is the method that I used to do, back then it bsod every now and then. After messing around with the settings I managed to "fix" it, but apparently it just delayed the bsod instead of fixing it. I left the vr gaming scene for a few months, yesterday I came back hoping they'd fix this method but nope. I just tried it and it bsod in around 5 minutes, I really hope they'd fix this because my router is in a different room and it'd be inconvenient to use the other method. Sucks that this method still bsod for me.

this is a windows driver related issue nothing to do with virtual desktop or pico. Your best option would be PICO stream assistance via USB if you do not have a router right where your computer is. Another thing you can do is by a cheap switch with 1G ports, connect the cable that comes from your router and connected to your pc to one port, then connect your pc on another, and by the USB C to Ethernet adapter and I showed in my USB C to Ethernet adapter video, that way you can connect the PICO 4 with that adapter to your LAN network. If that does not work for you then your only option is PICO Stream Assistant which has gotten a bit better.

When I shut down the wifi in the Pico 4 menu the connection fails. Can you pleass explain what i need to do?

you can try to reconnect to wifi, launch VD, then turn off wifi, that usually solves the issue for me, just make sure your PICO is fully USB tethered to your PC, if not then it will keep disconnecting since it has no wait to detect your PC.

Do you have any detailed crash reports on those bsod? To see whats exactly causing problems in the drivers? Its just weird that a network driver will break a whole OS just like nothing. I upgraded my pc few weeks ago and my mobo has usb 3.2 gen 2x2 ports and i was exited to buy a cable and tether my pico but spending 40 euros on something very unstable kinda sets you back a bit

unfortunately I do not have any logs about BSOD anymore, but the issue happens to some people and not other, not sure why, but it happened to me many many times until I finally moved to USB C to ethernet adapter and connected my pico 4 directly to my LAN router where my PC connects, no more issues and it is the best option tbh. Check my USB C to Ethernet video showcasing the adapter and cable I got.

Requires at least USB 3.0. i just bought 5m of the 3.2 gen 2x2 to see whats the story, maybe i will be able to play latency free while charging at max power, i might give you updates on that

Searching on the internet I found a fix so that the blue screen no longer happens, when connected with USB and when opening VD in the VD menu activate the Encrypt local traffic option, with that I no longer had the blue screen

USB Tethered gives you a more stable latency variation, which oscillates more on wireless connection. But usb tethered method does not seem to work for all desktops, some experience lots of BSOD, on others it works no problem. Stick with your WIFI connection if that's working good enough for you.

I’m not surprised people keep asking about the batch files, you didn’t mention these at all in the previous video. I thought if missed something & kept rewinding. How could anyone have the slightest idea what you did? All I saw was that you minimised the Pico 4 window and the batch files were already showing. You didn’t explain anything.

Make sure you have USB debugging enabled in PICO advance settings as shown in the video.

I am using this method (also I don’t get bsods), and my internet is much worse, when I am using this method. For example: Time for opening google without vr connected is about 2 seconds, but with vr connected its 10 seconds. What I need to do? (sorry if it’s stated in the video and I didn’t notice it)?

Not sure whats causing the delays on browsing internet from pico while on tethered. Maybe try disabling WIFI on PICO to avoid potential network preferences issues when both methods are enable.

By default through pico, but you could make it play on both pc and pico or just the pc.

I follow this guide and i am able tu use tethring with 1200mbs and it is so good for playing racing sim....BUT.....every time that i quit a game.....tethring will be lost and i have to restart all....pc,pico,and apps.... However....i notice that using pico with the hotspot of my motherboard wifi 6e and usb cable plugged seems more stable than onlu with hotspot....but maybe it's only a placebo effect!

If you quit a steam vr game it should drop you back in the steam light house, after you quit steam it should then drop you back in virtual desktop virtual environment. The issue you described has never happened to me on tethered.

VD stated they do not have the proper access to the PICO to allow for USB streaming. Like you said it is def possible, PICO Stream Assistant supports it natively.

I use it its No issues what so ever. I was using the ethernet link but I would get lock ups when going back to desktop. this is Flawless. So far anyways.
