what's bound to happen to hosters is a huge tank in FPS and some input lag since you'll be running the server and your own game so hopefully your computer can handle it

@@Jackyaboy not a local server, it's hard stuck to 8 players. But a steam group server can reach to 32 if you don't mind server instability, 20 is optimal

Thank you so much for this! I went through 4 different guides before this and they all failed to work. This was the last ditch effort and it worked! There was some weirdness with people losing their guns between maps, but we were so happy to just play it that it didn't matter. Thank you so much!

Hey man its not working anymore for me over here i dont know why, can you update the video? or the plugins maybe? Edit: I did get it right this time, made a new fresh installment and followed the steps of the video, first use the link he provided for the plugins in the description then the rest goes as he says on video. He did updated the plugins, but i had to uninstall all my old mods and plugins to make it work in the end.

Your friends won't need anything extra at all, unless you're hosting custom maps then they also need the same map. If you want all 8 survivors in the game without having all players, you can change the command l4d_multislots_max_survivors "4" to "8" in \Steam\steamapps\common\Left 4 Dead 2\left4dead2\cfg\sourcemod\l4dmultislots.cfg so that NPC survivors can stay in the game

@wOoKiKi yes and no since people have saved their weapons but some have taken others. But the plugin has caused issues that I wasn't aware of so it could be worth disabling.

Every time I try to start a local server campaign with my launch options set to "-insecure" my game will just close out. I'm not getting a notification that the game crashed or anything it just closes out. When i took out "-insecure" from my launch options it seems to work, but I can't do the 8 player lobby thing.

I do plan on updating if the pack becomes outdated. For the friendly fire thing you can go to sourcemod.cfg in the sourcemod folder that's in the cfg folder and place these commands in there: sm_cvar survivor_friendly_fire_factor_easy 0 sm_cvar survivor_friendly_fire_factor_expert 0 sm_cvar survivor_friendly_fire_factor_hard 0 sm_cvar survivor_friendly_fire_factor_normal 0

Is there a way to disable the 8 survivors and revert them back into only 4 survivors again in singleplayer? By the way thank you so much for this tutorial! It worked great! One other thing though, when I swap to another character, they duplicate, is there a way to prevent this?

you can remove -insecure but it will turn off sourcemod. If you still want sourcemod but just at 4 players then go to \Steam\steamapps\common\Left 4 Dead 2\left4dead2\cfg\sourcemod\sourcemod.cfg then scroll all the way down until you see "sm_cvar sv_maxplayers 8." Just change the 8 to a 4 and that should be it. For the duplication thing, server owners can type !csc and choose the survivors for people and bots.

Hmm Ive noticed that even though I have l4d_scs_cookies "0" it seems to be storing my chosen character. So when I start a L4D1 campaign I spawn in as Ellis just for eg. Any ideas? Amazing guide btw.

Yes you try using /sm_admin in the chat box to access sourcemods menu and you'll have to use a bind for admin system so the command to access that is bind 6 "show_menu menu"

question: this will not work if you have cosmetic mods on? e.g. different survivor skins, gun skins etc? Also, will this work for custom campaigns from workshop? We're planning to play the resident evil maps + other maps so... just wanna make sure before I do anything.

Maps work so long as people joining have the map as well. If the hoster has cosmetic mods on, the server will not let people join unless they have the same exact cosmetic mods because of scripts. There are some cosmetic mods that don't have scripts that do let players join without problems like HUDs, recolors, and reanimations but thats as far as I was able to play locally.

@TATERSL4D2 Hi, i'm having crash issues, i tried alot of workaround but not working... The mod is installed correctly, it shows 8 slots and 8 bots we can go through a level with 4 players but when the 5th player joins, it crashes randomly within 1 minute any solutions i could try?

hello, thanks for the tutorial! Quick question, when I typed in "sm plugins list" it doesn't recognize it although I've followed the instructions to the letter. what does it mean if people trying to join are stuck at no loading progress while the host is able to load into a game with all bots?

that could mean you have mods enabled that players joining are trying to install, since l4d2 does not have an auto installer upon joining you might need to disable some cosmetic mods. If this is not the case, tell people to press the tilde key and check console for what the game is trying to do once the loading bar disappears.

the ping can be difficult to adjust I wouldn't know how to accomodate for high ping players. Also there's no hud to work for more than 8 players but you can download a plugin that will show all survivors health above their heads forums.alliedmods.net/showthread.php?p=2736513

@@LXNCH1 subscribe to l4d2 set in l4d1 to fix the hud and armsviewmodel unfortunately it's tough to fix the lobby which is why I added the survivor chat select plugin so you can just select your survivor mid game

Please help, i downloaded the 8 player addon and the source abd everything is good except that when we move to next chapter the players begin having their character switched to other characters, i figured that the fix is the survivor chat select, correct me if im wrong please and if im indeed how do install that plugin?

You already have the plugin installed if you downloaded the same pack. Just change the command like the previous comment I replied to. The reply said this: go to \Steam\steamapps\common\Left 4 Dead 2\left4dead2\cfg\sourcemod and find the .cfg file named "l4dscs.cfg" and change the command l4d_scs_cookies "0" to "1" This only works if they selected a survivor they want with !csm

I did it and all it did was replace my l4d1 characters with l4d2 characters and theres only 4 survivors The lobby has 8 slots but i spawn in and theres no L4D1 survivors, just l4D2 survivors. I want to play with all 8 characters from both games, how do i do that?

You'll have to go through the multislots cfg file and allow all 8 survivors to not be auto kicked. Once you do that you might need another mod to have them auto spawn.

that is an issue I did not think could occur, perhaps verify integrity of your files, unsub to any other mods you have, retrace steps, or maybe don't have admin system installed. Those are the possible solutions I can think of.

sourcemod isn't working, either a misplacement of the folders upon installation or forgetting to type -insecure in launch options.

@@TATERSL4D2 I reinstalled the game and followed your tutorial again but it is still the same "unknown command" when I typed in "sm" on the console. The "-insecure" launch option works since I got the warning message when I loaded the game. Btw I am doing this on the Steamdeck. Not sure if that matters. However, I did see eight players slots in the lobby. Could I still play with more than four players even if the source mod might not work properly? Thanks.

@@liyunzhu4552 If you are doing this on a steamdeck, my pack is only windows os compatible whereas steamdeck is a modified linux. You will need sourcemod to have 8 players in game. The lobby mod can only bring 8 players to the lobby but the server will only carry four players without sourcemod. @@picklejuicedan1346 if you do want to change them you can go to \Steam\steamapps\common\Left 4 Dead 2\left4dead2\cfg\sourcemod\sourcemod.cfg scroll all the way down the sourcemod.cfg file and I left friendly fire commands where you can tweak them to your liking

If no other additions were made to your pack, it could be that the custom map might be too intensive for the engine to handle with 8 players. What map was it?

@@namoan5305 try going to \Steam\steamapps\common\Left 4 Dead 2\left4dead2\cfg\sourcemod\l4d2_character_manager.cfg and change the command l4d2_survivor_set "3" to "0" After that go to \Steam\steamapps\common\Left 4 Dead 2\left4dead2\addons\sourcemod\plugins and move "[L4D2] Survivor Chat Select Windows.smx" to the "disabled" folder and see if that may fix anything

actually, my game crashes after I load any maps (official and custom) maps but when I removed metamod and sourcemod, the map loads and it works normally which sucks because I can't play 8-player coop anymore.

Admin can change anyone's character with !csc. But the players themselves can change their own character no matter what.

@@xen6293 The local server can only reach up to 8 all thanks to versus, so this pack unlocks the other 4 slots for campaign. But recently I figure out how to play with friends 1.I open lobby and start game 2.and wait for random player join. 3.vote return to lobby. 4.kick random players and set lobby to friends only and now I can play with friends. PS.If you have way easier to play with friends you can tell me. THX for your helping.

@@IWant2SleepZZZ2002 normally that isn't necessary to do. I've never heard of something like this happening, could be a porting issue but port forwarding isn't necessary to tweak for local servers. Does your friend see the game through matchmaking when you keep the lobby public?

It means sourcemod isn't working. This could mean that the folders were misplaced, -insecure wasn't typed in launch options, local server wasn't selected, or your operating system is not windows.
