In April 2018 the Xbox 360's backwards compatibility program for original Xbox games received an update for the first time in over 10 years! A few rumblings of this going live made the rounds online, but no one fully verified this or checked to see what differences were made. On Halloween 2019, Mathieulh released his own version of the April 2018 update for JTAG/RGH/Devkit consoles to succeed the previous modified files.
Initially this was an incremental update which gave you all the benefits of the previously released modified files by xorloser, but Mathieulh proceeded to go a few steps further. After several more modifications were made to these files, he added in Guide access as well as in-game chat capabilities. This is HUGE because both of these features were never available to people playing Xbox games on the Xbox 360 until 2019!

The reason some games that work fine aren't added to the back compat list is because Microsoft still has to secure permissions to add them to the back compat list from the original publisher

The Xbox 360 is still a great system to this day and interest in it is growing again. Last true generation before DLC took over and you only got half the game on a disk. Only just started on 360 and PS3 modding but your videos have been invaluable. Only just got my 1st RGH 1.2 falcon up and running last week and it’s a good feeling. Keep up the good work

I jumped on this update as soon as I saw it being talked about in the Xlink Kai discord. My jaw dropped when I opened the guide while playing an OG xbox game.

I haven't turned on my trusty old JTAG 360 in years and this video has gave me an urge to have a go at it, however I have so many other modding projects all mid process that I shouldn't start another one until I get a few of the rest finished, lol. BTW MrMario2011 this is the sort of subject that was the reason I always listened to thr Mod Chat podcast and I really miss it, please bring it back! Even if its only once every two or three months 🙏

You could always play music in the background while playing OG Xbox games on the 360, you just had to start the music before booting up the game. You could even change tracks back and forth while playing by using the media remote.

I think most people who owned a modified 360 new about the Panzer Dragoon PAL problems back in the day and just got just got the NTSC version.Which played fine. As having a modified 360 made it region free. Also knowing that there were many original Xbox games that played fine. Even though Microsoft never listed them as being officially supported through backwards compatibility.

It took me forever to figure out why this wasn't working! Just for anyone else who's struggling..... Make sure to only copy the "COMPATABILITY" folder over or this won't work. Pay extra close attention to "8:18". Hope this helps and thanks MrMario! :)

You could always play music in the background of og Xbox games on the 360. Just have to start the music first then start the game. I figured that out when I was like 11

They should be left untouched but remember THIS IS A HACK, it is your responsibility to take sensible precautions like backing up your installed games, homebrew, saves, NAND etc.

I don't think it will fix performance problems. Graphical glitches, freezes, slowdowns. There is no way somebody is going to do all that work to make the emulation better. Serious Sam 2 is not working in my 360 either. After the logo the console turns off. Destroy All Humans 2 freezes after a a minute playing the game but lot of people can play it without any problem.Weird. Maybe some issues in my end. The Warriors crashes after the intro, Urban Chaos crashes before the first level. List goes on.

You have to use a stealth service to get online, period. There will always be a ban risk.

It seems like years ago, you had to have a Microsoft HDD otherwise the HDX partition wouldn't work. Is this still the case? It'd be cool to buy an SSD and drop in my HDD enclosure on my JTAG console for backwards compatibility.

Hi, do I have to run the partition tool or can I just copy the new files over to my (RGH) 360 (after backing the originals up)? There's already a HDDX partition there and it seems like I should just be able to copy the new files over on a USB stick.

Dusted off my Jtag 360 recently to update to 3.21 and catching up with all the developments from the last few years and now there is this :D I think the X360 (jtag/rgh) will be the next big thing now delevopers like Mathieu are stepping in and start developing new features and option for the system.

@@MrMario2011 Fan- freaking tastic! Thanks! Are there any new compatible games for stock hardware? These lists online are often very very old. It's been so long since I popped in the disc. Can't remember if this was before the update. However knowing the game would stuck after level 3, 4 or 5 (!?) discouraged me from playing.

@@MrMario2011 I actually didn't know about the Panzer Dragoon Orta fix xD I thought it was to add support for Kingdom Under Fire: Crusader since that's the only game they've added to the list in the 5832 build (it wasn't in build 5829), I have extracted and converted the full list in XML format from the original 5832 Fusion front end here: pastebin.com/5dPHze8i

Whenever I load a game it just shows the original xbox logo, waits a couple seconds and a message pops up for about a second, closes and it freezes at the xbox logo

@@MrMario2011 I modded a Halo OG xbox. lol, that ribbon cable timed connection was problematic for me. It is the older mod of swapping out the OG drive for a 500GB EIDE drive, if I remember right. I should think about upgrading to a SATA drive. Also, been playing around with just doing a deep dive on modding a 360. I'll be able to use it's HDMI port rather than the OG xbox's component to OSSC. Ugh, I know this is all subjective.

@@RPT111 That's cool, but keep your expectations low as it's very unlikely Microsoft has tested any NTSC-J games at all because the XBOX basically failed in Japan. Backwards compatibility is a remarkable technical achievement but it's no substitute for the real thing.

The recent dashboard update doesn't have anything to do with this BC update. However it looks like the other change was adding in support for a Kingdom Under Fire title.

@@MrMario2011 I know that I am just stating its not the only thing getting updated in general. they are still trying to keep online modding offline but it still didn't work at least with the latest dashboard they made a good effort and did mess things up for more then hours. changing some of the method people used to get online and avoid bans didn't work but it was at least a 2 day game process this time around.

@@MrMario2011 It seems that even old files are doing the same thing , pressing guide button and heading to xbox home from original xbox game reboots the xbox 360 , must be due to dashboard update i did to latest version (of course the hacked one ) ah well theres nothing much to do , i will have to live with that , its just anoying that xbox needs some time to boot back ... , thank you again for the great videos :)

this is why i like native consoles like xbox and ps2. these companys never will give us a true backwards compatibility again i feel like. yes sony is doing ps4 but its tricky as the years go on. 🤔

Native is always best to have on hand, but emulation is always great to have access to as well.

I have never owned a 360 .... do you think its worth getting in 2020.. games i mostly enjoy are shumps racing and fighting games..

i have xbox 360 slim jtag my cdrom stop working can i put another slim jtag cdrom its works fine or not

You have to flash the DVD key onto your new drive, or swap the PCB from your old drive into your new drive.

yeah i'm following Mathieulh too so when this was released i stuck it straight on my modded 360 xD also it was crashing for me so i had to disable Nova in the Modules section on the Aurora dashboard i'm using and that solved it.
