With different decking materials to choose from, we decided to take an in depth look at how to update your old deck with composite decking using Veranda with ArmorGuard from Home Depot. This option offers the look and feel of wood without the yearly maintenance. For a detailed how-to on this project visit www.doityourself.com

This video was so helpful. I'm doing a diy installation this weekend. It will be perfect for my the small deck at my condo. It's always in the shade and under a tree. The last wooden deck was rotten straight through from the consistent moisture and being ground level.

Your right composite decking is easier to install but in my experience this decking only last on average around ten years with more danger when they start too go. Nothing like real wood I bet that old deck was 25 plus. Good luck.

YES! my joists are all rotted because of the idiot who installed it (before i bought the house). composite boards butt-jointed on single joists, right up against each other. my folks still have a great deck and they've only stained it once with the rest of the house when we had a big hailstorm. real wood. i wouldn't say composite is easier to install either, especially for one person. the composite decking boards are very heavy and like rubber bands. you can see it bending in the video. one guy probably can't even carry a decking board at the center because both ends would be hitting the ground.

Would definitely recommend it! It may be a tad costly initially, but with minimal ongoing maintenance the long term cost is incredibly low. I came across some reasonably priced (I think) composite cladding at www.roofingmegastore.co.uk/roofing-categories/garden/decking/composite-decking.html and have been incredibly impressed with it. Definitely avoid timber and go composite! :)

@@331SVTCobra splinters are definitely not a problem because you have to wear shoes to stand on you deck in the summer, unless you are a sadomasochist and like the smell of burning foot flesh. slick as .... in the winter, too. i'll be replacing the idiot installer's work (came with the house) with real wood. composite seem scammier and scammier the more i learn about them. also, consider what happens when you need to replace a board. wood is wood, composites are trendy and whatever product you buy today, won't be available in the future. there is a video on stains, but the guy seems like he is more interested in BBQ sauce than things that would actually be on your deck for any length of time. i've had some metal furniture, hose, etc., on my deck and they all collect dust, fir needle, pine cones etc, which seems to be what stains the deck. not sure if it's permanent, but it won't come off with a hose. maybe a pressure washer would work, but i don't want to tear up my joist any more than they already are.

I thought I would love it but never again will I buy it . This was about 4 years ago so maybe the tech has changed but I will gladly run a sander over a good thick deck any day . Basically you can’t fix it at all

Thanks for your honest opinion, I was looking for something waterproof because I prefer low maintenance but I’m now considering plain ol wood; just gotta stain every few years. The deck U have now hasnt seen stain in over 10 years and it’s producing wood/brown rot smell causing weezing.
