As Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu prepares to visit the White House on Monday, why does Israel have so much support in Washington, especially in Congress?
On this week's UpFront, Professor Alan Dershowitz debates former Congressman Brian Baird on the influence of the Israel lobby.
Mehdi Hasan also speaks to former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard about the country's controversial refugee policies and her current work with the Global Partnership for Education.

I think the US Congressman is a brave man to attend the show. He has shown tremendous restraints and patience against accusations. Good to know there are still a few good men left in the US Congress.

Congressman Brian Baird supported Israel he then visited Gaza after Israel had flattened much of it, blowing up schools, hospitals, UN food banks, refugee centres. Baird was shocked at what he saw and educated began educating himself on what was going on but he was still not anti Israel but instead wanted to be fair and humane but that was enough for the Israeli Lobby to try and remove him from Congress.

UpFront is becoming one of my favorite programs. I would advise Mehdi to consider what people are saying in the comments regarding allowing his guests to complete their thoughts and stop interrupting so much. Mehdi seemed to be doing better in this interview, but in his past interviews, it becomes annoying when you continue to interrupt your guest. Thanks. Keep up the great work.

Alan is right on script - Smear the opposition with accusations of bigotry, what-about-isms with generalizations about other lobbies, deflection to a different issue, etc. Its quite a show, and hes very good at it. But anyone with any ability to think critically, knows its simply a show. Luckily, people who take any interest in these discussions, have access to objective information, and Dershowitz's projection is fading. On the off chance that Alan reads this, I do wonder what it feels like to be the kind of person who hires professional investigators to dig up dirt (marijuana, alcohol use, etc) on underage girls who are victims of rape, solely to smear them and protect their rapists? Who knows, more important to note, its that kind of person who has become one of the top pro-israel spokesmen. Congratulations.

A government has to follow the voter's mandate. That is why they are elected. However, a country like Australia is subjected to fairly conservative media. The media makes all the difference. Today we live in a world of on-line media. This is largely unregulated and not always honest - it is subject to sponsorship pressures and that means money talks. I hold great fears for the refugees of the world. They may be innocent, but will still be blamed for all the problems of the world.

+Abdul Taha Protect borders and national sovereignty. I could hardly imagine our neighbours in our region (such as South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore to name a few) would tolerate a situation wherein they simply allow anyone who manages to reach their shore to gain immediate residency. We are merely adhering to regional standards of other developed nations. And before you pull the 'oh what about when the British came, they were boat people??' I will make three points: 1. the majority of Australians do not have Anglo-Celtic heritage, and therefore are not directly nor indirectly descended from the colonists 2. the landmass of Australia was mostly uninhabited by the Indigenous people and they had formed no central government at the time of British arrival. Therefore, sovereignty for them existed only in principle, in reference to notions of sovereignty as a philosophical idea. The conclusion that can be drawn from this is that our present day sovereignty is both in-principle and legal, by virtue of our central government, domestic laws, and diplomatic status as a recognised state 3. the state known as Australia has only existed since 1901, and should thus only be judged against those standards practice from that time in which national existence came into being.
@HenryDarr
@HenryDarr 8 жыл бұрын
+James Russell The Indigenous population are still suffering the effects of mass genocide and the colonizers are to blame . They are 3 % of the population but are 70% of inmate population . Death in custody is a common occurrence , white population live longer due to the ever widening gap in health and social security . These facts are just a few of many , one day they will be treated as equals and a treaty will be delivered .
@jamesrussell7337
@jamesrussell7337 8 жыл бұрын
yeah fair enough I accept that. But also remember that death in custody isn't a function of direct police violence in most cases, rather a function of the high probability of incarceration. And I'd reiterate, most of the Australian population are not colonial descendants. But in any case it's beside the principal point I was making, which is that national sovereignty in 2015 is held to a different standard that it was in 1788, and we should make laws that accord with 21st century challenges, not the abuse of imperial power as was the case in 1788.
