My little brother was in need of a desktop computer so I decided to get a used Dell OptiPlex 9020 MT on the cheap off eBay and upgrade it. In this video I will gut the unit and install a better CPU, upgrade the PSU to one that won't explode, upgrade the GPU, upgrade to an SSD, and max out the RAM. These machines can make pretty decent units when you upgrade them.
Specs
Dell OptiPlex 9020
Intel Core i7-4790K
MSI Ventus XS OC GTX 1660 Ti
32GB RAM
Samsung 860 Pro 1TB
Seasonic Prime Platinum 550W PSU
10Gbps Fiber NIC (Mellanox Connect-X 2)

Great Video my ninja. The only one I could find as in depth as this is. The level of disgust you had for the thermal adhesive mishap…. Hilarious 😂. My favorite part about it all is that Yahawashi over saw the build from the carpet and the heavens. ✌🏾

Thanks for this video :) I dont know if this might help, but I use an - old - " Cooler Master G650M " as the PSU. it fits perfectly inside the 9020MT, no latch issue or anything. It is exactly the same size as the stock PSU. My 9020MT : i7-4790 (got rid of stock fan, using a cooler master heatsink+customized led fan instead) + 32 gb ram + Sapphire Radeon R9 Nano ( I love that small graphic card !) + samsung evo SSD.

The design isn't "flawed". In fact, that latch is quite practical. The pc was not designed with yacht-sized gpu's in mind. 🤷🤷🤷

Just bought a dell 9020 w/ i7 4790 and 16mb of ram. Throwing a 1660 ti into it and a 512gb sata drive. Was really contemplating running the stock 290w psu for this configuration to avoid swapping but it's a little to close for comfort. I'd have all around $250 into it not buying a psu which is dope af for the price to performance. But throwing a cheap 400w psu into it might have to happen for peice of mind.

Not that I'd say NOT to get a better power supply, it's not as close as you'd think. All in all, between the 1660 Ti and the 4790K, you'd be at around 200 watts all in, leaving you with 90 watts of overhead. It's honestly fine. Your bigger concern is the age of the power supply. If it's within your budget, I'd upgrade it. However, don't compromise with some garbage that could be worse than the PSU you'd be replacing. People like to put those 80+ white PSU's in these, and they're honestly a downgrade in some ways, despite having more power. They're just built poorly.

@@TheGameBench It's a trade secret that stock PSUs from Dell, HP, Acer etc are high quality and under spec. It's not surprising that you get about 20 to 30% more head room on top of the spec on the label. Dirt cheap too if your were to get the same PSU brand new on Ebay.

Try not get off branded PSU’s… since most are not warranted and even if it may have better wattage it could be a unstable one causing it to age quickly or ruin other parts as it may have more output than needed

(just wanted to add that in there for you as I faced this same problem installing a gtx 1650) now I just got to find me a new gpu because yeah it still needed the extra power... even though I was told the 1650 would run on the pci e without additional power... sheesh... oh well great video though... how do I get to be one of your little brothers so you can put together mine lol!!!

DDR3L is just low voltage than normal DDR3. The motherboard has to be compatible, which this one is. It was chosen because Crucial recommended it for this system and was what they had available.

I want to start off by saying you have helped me TREMENDOUSLY! You are the reason I chose the 9020 to build my first PC. I'm going with the i7-4790k and RTX 2060. Should I get a CPU cooler? I'm using an i5-4590 now and I'm not sure the fan is sufficient. My new PSU will be a 650w.
@TheN3tw0rq
@TheN3tw0rq Жыл бұрын
The stock Dell heatsink is sufficient, it's a little better than the stock Intel one. The TDP increase is small to the i7-4790K. If you choose a different heatsink you need to watch out for the height clearance, and also note that you can't remove the back panel on this unit, you would have to remove the motherboard if you have to change the CPU support bracket. Also having a larger heatsink will restrict, the already small amount of airflow in the unit for the rest of the system including the GPU. I haven't researched putting a 3rd party heatsink/cooler in this unit and personally stuck with the stock Dell one. These are just some things you will have to keep in mind if you consider doing that. If you do install one, let me know which one and how it went.

@TheN3tw0rq I think I'm going to stick with the stock heat sink because you know what you're doing. I'm waiting on the 24 pin to 8 pin to come in the mail, should be another week. I'm having a hard time finding a i7 4790k for less than $100 but I may just have to go ahead and do it.

I have a few questions first I seen on a linus video he did a dual sata pcie adapter without upgrading the psu and a gtx 1660 ti as well and was wondering if it would be fine also how well do you think this will be able to run triple a titles also I'm planning to upgrade from my xbox series s to this mainly because I want to be able to mod and also to be able to emulate games the main games I play are souls game elden ring, sekiro, ds3 etc metal gear risinf reveangeance and Devil may cry 5 and I want to emulate a few lower end switch games do you think it would he worth while for me to make this?(sorry for it being so long)
@TheGameBench
@TheGameBench Жыл бұрын
The 1660 Ti, with a dual SATA to PCIe adapter, would be fine on the stock 290 watt power supply. As to playing AAA titles, consider the 4th Gen i7 what it is at this point... an entry level CPU. It's slower than a current generation i3, by a healthy margin. That being said, it depends on the game. It will run something like Doom Eternal just fine but it will struggle in less optimized titles like Cyberpunk. Even older AAA titles like Rise of the Tomb Raider can be a mixed bag with some areas doing great, and other areas being a bit rough. As to the Series S, this will be a technical downgrade in terms of power, but this is capable of doing a lot more than a console, so it's it depends on everything you want to do. And for emulation, once again, it depends. Just do a quick Google search for the emulators you want to run and you can see a lot of people offering up advice. Reddit is full of threads about emulation perf.

CPU - Replaced RAM - Replaced (or didn't come with any to begin with) PSU - Replaced Optical - Replaced SSD - Added Graphics - Added Ethernet - Upgraded So in the end, all you really got was a motherboard? Am I missing something? The value of the used OptiPlex is in the totality of the parts. Was there another element that made this a good value? Like you didn't just get it for cheap, but DIRT cheap (under $100?) Or did you already have some of those compatible replacement parts on hand? Or did you get some crazy deal on a 1660, RAM, CPU, etc? Did you get resale value from the CPU or re-use value from the other parts you pulled? I mean it is still possible this was a value added project, I'm just curious because I've been spending many hours looking at different used OptiPlexes for sale and what upgrades I could make to them, and I'm crunching numbers like Kramer trying to figure out the Michigan bottle deposit scam.

@MrSeanselleck
@MrSeanselleck Жыл бұрын
Dell support assistant works great. Bios updates work fine. After installing your 4790k, you will get an cpu notice. Continue booting. It may not register the correct speed or model cpu. Restart in bios and exit bios. Mine runs a 4790k, but for whatever reason i had to do the bios thing. Consider reliding your cpu as it was likely over clocked if it was used. I used a cheap delider and noctua 2nd gen paste (both inside the lid and for the heatsink)with great results despite what naysayers thought. Full load with stock heatsink runs about 172 Fahrenheit. Been running fine for a couple months. And with the paste vs liquid metal, i did not have to worry about an electric conductive costic substance.

I've tested the 4790K on the 9020 with the A18 BIOS and it didn't need an update, but I also got a strange error on startup and the CPU had some odd boosting behavior that was easily solved by simply entering the BIOS and exiting back out.

That's a common misconception, and it's understandable since the Dell's own documentation even states that, but the 7020 absolutely can run up to 32GB. I imagine that Dell kneecapped the 7020 initially to give businesses incentive to buy the 9020, even though the boards are pretty much identical. I wouldn't recommend doing that in this machine. Especially with the stock heatsink and lack of cooling.

The 9020 itself has two DisplayPorts. The GPU... depends on the model, but I would expect a 1660 Ti to have at least one HDMI port.

how is that cpu much better they both are four cores i mean that i7 is what an 8 thread but i dont think you will see much more gaming performance with it. i could be wrong but on average thats an 100 dollar gpu or more i could buy an optiplex with i7 already

Bc there is pretty big difference between the two an i5 4th gen especially this one here would bottle neck the hell out of the 1660 the 4790 k and not k It can perform up to 30 percent better 25 percent in most areas

When I power on my optiplex, it turns on, the fans spin, the cpu gets hot, but I cant getting nothing on my monitor. What do I do?
@TheN3tw0rq
@TheN3tw0rq Жыл бұрын
Do you get any beep codes? Does the power light blink? Is the fans spinning really fast? Does the system POST beep? What CPU is in the system? What are you plugging your monitor into? Answer those questions so I can get a better understanding.

@@TheN3tw0rq ok, I used to get 132 beep codes, so I commented 5 days ago and you sayed ddr3l ram should be used, so I bought some, and it fixed the beep codes. The power button light blinks orange when I power it on, the stock fans are spinning an a normal speed and are very quiet, I do not know what a post beep is but I do get a single beep when i power it on, I am using an i7 4790s, and I am using the motherboards built in VGA port with the i7 4790s built in graphics.

Good job, I guess... But a few of your parts choices dont make sense. Im pretty sure you cannot overclock on that chipset so why you got the "K" SKU is beyond me. You could have bought a cheaper PSU. GTX 1070 ti or 1080 offer much better performance that a 16 series. Probably cheaper as well. DDR3L is pointless in a desktop. Windows 7? In 2019? Seriously?

1) 4.00 GHz base clock vs 3.60 GHz, 4.40 GHz turbo vs 4.00 GHz with only 4 watts of additional TDP. It's the best CPU for the socket which was why it was chosen and fully compatible. The stock Dell heatsink is better than Intel's stock heatsink and will handle the 88W TDP just fine. It's not that big of a jump compared to the stock CPU. 2) I could of but I don't cheap out on power supplies. Granted a Seasonic Prime is a bit overkill for this build, I was footing the bill and didn't care. Since we were replacing the PSU regardless, put the best part that is compatible. 3) You're right, those cards perform better. I didn't price out used parts at the time. I was only wanting to put current new parts I could buy direct from Newegg. The 1660 Ti seemed appropriate for the build and at that time. It was for occasional gaming. Even the 1660 Ti had clearance issues with this case though. With this kinda case and limited airflow, you really want to stick to smaller, budget cards. 4) It was all Crucial had in stock at the time with little to no price difference. I only mentioned it because it was still compatible and would work with the system. 5) Yes really, arguably Microsoft's best Operating System. It was still supported until 2020 with ESU bumping that out to 2023. Since I operate a business I did get ESU licenses. I will do the same for Windows 10.
