This is very cool! I’m new to all things electronics (I recently made a hacked arm band radio “spirit box” for my teenaged daughter for Christmas haha) my dad was a literal electronics genius but sadly he’s not with us anymore to teach me. I recently acquired a Sony Betamovie BMC 200P for only $20! and it’s mint but unfortunately didn’t come with a battery but it’s does have the charger. I’m looking to get one (somehow but don’t want to pay a fortune) so this is SO HELPFUL, hoping I can try to do something like this if ever I find one and it’s not working. i remember doing this way back in the 90s for my bmc 220 and my RCA VHS camcorders i got at a later time as a replacement for the beta, except i used AA NiMH batteries with RadioShack battery holders, and i still have them. never needed expensive replacement camcorder batteries. especially when they went out of production. VHS always needed 6 or 12 volts to work, so i made a battery holder for regular alkalines which are rated at 1.5 volts and rechargeable NiMH 1.2 volts you just have to consider the voltages.

Dave, these battery packs are the same as the ones used in wireless phones back in the day. When I worked the the electronics store, we'd sell a ton replacements for those phones. The only difference between different part numbers was mainly the little connector that hooked them up. That camera is still amazing for its time.

Sub c was a very common cell size for battery packs. Used in tons of power tools too.

Took a BMC-220 and a Sharp 'Slimcam' to an airshow back in 2K2. Despite being a heavier camera the 220 was better balanced and with the reflex finder, it was easier to track aircraft in motion. In 2009 we were gifted a Sony DVD/Memory Stick Handycam and since the last good NP-11 battery (as well as the SlimCam's lead-acid battery) finally croaked, we stopped using them. Would love to rebuild our old NP-1 battery so we could run our SL-2000/CCD-G1 camera outfit (or even our Sanyo VCR-7300 portable HiFi).

The np1 uses the same cells, just 10 if them. I have a few from my old camera and a 1500 charger to go with it.

I did this to my NP-11 battery, but I actually put in replacements for original sized NiCad cells.

That costs money. By now you should know that I am a cheap bastard. I won't spend a dime if I don't have to. This is my camera in case you guys didn't figure it out. Picked it up for a song, and it had a tape inside that the owner had me transfer. So he can hand me back my 20.00 bill for the transfer and my only cost will be the USB stick that his tape went onto.

I have a theory that the batteries didn't have to last too long as nobody wanted to hold 12lbs at head level for long. 💪💪💪

Hey Dave. Very good use of those old batteries. Couple of questions: Does using the steel-reinforced epoxy have any risk of shorting out or draining your "new" batteries. Also, if a charger was designed for recharging NiCads, does it care if you charge NiMh cells in it? I always thought they had a selector switch to charge the two different technologies.

Not at all. If the cells overheat they will open their thermal cut out and charging stops. remember this is not a camera that's going to get used the battery got charged once and I shot a little demo with it and then it gets put away it's not going to get used. If I want to use it for something I'll haul it out charge the battery up for an hour and then use it but it's not going to be left sitting on the charger so I'm not too worried about anything happening there is safety cutout switch if it would overheat which will stop the charging. As to the steel reinforced epoxy where's it going to discharge to? It's only holding the terminals to plastic which is an insulator. Then again steel reinforced epoxy is not conductive anyway.

A nice higher capacity upgrade woud be 3 LiFePO4 cells and a BMS, those cells are 3.3V each making a total of 9.9V

But then the charger would have to be upgraded. I went from 1000ma to 1500ma. That's a 50% upgrade and ur uses same charger.

Would you be willing to recell a battery for me? I have a sony trinicon betacam with the portable vcr that goes with it. batteries are long dead and im tired of lugging around a computer charging pack with it.

Some do. Some send me them to remove and transfer tapes. Others like this one I saw on facebook market place. I made an offer and bought it cheap just because it was a BMC110, the first camcorder model ever sold. I have an offer in for a big professional JVCSVHS camera now. Either the seller will accept my offer or not but I won't budge on my offer. I look at it as a tear down video and I base my offer on what I think it will generate in views. Thats how I ended up with the Betacam SX. Say it listed for way too much. Made an offer. He came back with a counter and I wouldn't budge. After it sat for a few weeks with no other offers he came down to my offer just to get rid of it. I never over pay for anything. If someone is dumb as a box of hammers and offers more, that's fine with me. I'm like the guys in pawn stars, I know what things are worth and I make an offer. They either accept or not. No sleep lost.

I was going to suggest re-stuffing that pack on the last video and forgot to comment. I have an idea for audio quality. You may be able to put a high quality mic inside of the old mic.

That's called progress. I shake my head when i hear that people still want to record on these beasts. I just collect them as display pieces not to use them for recording anything on. I also only collect specific significant pieces like this bmc110 because it was the first camcorder and it was so technically different the way it did things.

@@Pacificbell for the improvement in picture quality of the 2010 model as they were all as based by then that alone would be reason enough for me to dump the old crap and invest in a new battery. But then that's me, i strive for image quality over everything else.

Well I didn’t realise metal hydrate cells charged at the same rate as nicad chemistry. I know now what I must scavenge for my packs from this era. Slightly less capacity won’t matter as I won’t be making a full feature. Like you it’s getting it working to show and tell . Been rummaging in my shed and found a unopened Sony L750 . There’s gold in the there boxes

The mic is too far inside the case, it needs to be right at the front cover, where the hole should be. Too often I have had to repair radios with poor transmit audio, manufactures are sloppy with there design.
