More progress made to the abandoned plane project, installing new avionics and improved usability to the cockpit. Installing the Garmin G5 unit and MGL Avionics engine monitor.
What I used:
- Garmin unit www.aircraftsp...
- MGL unit www.aircraftsp...
- Carbon cloth www.aircraftsp...
- Epoxy www.aircraftsp...
- 3d Printer, Available used or on amazon
This Video is part of a series where I am rebuilding an abandoned bush plane and upgrading it along the way. I torn everything down and starting from scratch, even the engine is being replaced with something completely different.
This plane is a 2000 Skyraider 1, closely related to the very popular KITFOX and AVID aircraft on a slightly smaller scale.

I have been thinking for a while that 3D printing for panel bezels, and control sticks makes a lot of sense. Nice to see someone doing it.

Very, very cool. I love the carbon fiber and am now considering something similar in my Sonex (thanks for the demonstration). I do quite a bit of 3D printing and, as another person mentioned, I'd be nervous about heat deforming the printed parts on a hot day. Maybe consider using the 3D printer to make a mold and lay up the G5 mount part in carbon instead. And the front bezel, too.

That’s a great idea, I’ll definitely make a video of the pla if it has any issues and the fix for it would probably be that exactly, making some carbon parts

Nice work, but can I make a few suggestions? For the fuel lines, I would use, at a minimum, good quality rubber automotive fuel hose. It's inexpensive and a lot more durable than that clear vinyl hose. And as much as I love designing clips, etc. and making them on my 3D printer, I would secure the fuel hoses with the time-tested double Adel clamp technique. One clamps goes around the frame tube and the other around the hose. A screw connects the two. Also, i hope you are using Tefzel insulated wire. It's not expensive at Aircraft Spruce. You can use nice thin 20 gauge for things like PTT switches.

Thanks! This one specifically probably not, but will meet Canadian regulations which are heavier. Some of these skyraiders are able to fly under part 103

Xactly!!! Those companies are ripping people off and they know damn well that a hand grip or a flush mount can be sold for pennies on the dollar just by 3d printing them. great job and what's even cooler is that they can be made in all sorts of colors. Show us how you did the fire wall please.

Awesome work. Love your usage of 3D printing. 👌🏼 Not sure what kind of phone you have, but maybe consider the quad lock integrated charging system. I just added it to my ADV motorcycle and it’s awesome. It is a hardwired 12 to 24 V supply. No extra wires needed, so it is super clean.

Newbie here! Your New avionics set seems to reduce the instruments on your dash or are they threww oacked with multi functions? Can you explain further if you get my question.
@claytonwodiany
@claytonwodiany 5 ай бұрын
I think I get you. They are multi function. I’ve got it simplified to 3 instruments, one is a backup airspeed indicator in case I lose electric. Then there is an engine and flight instrument, the engine monitor replaces 8 instruments and packs them into one small display, the flight display is the same idea. This allows for a simpler, easy to read panel with even more data. Also because of eliminating all the extra instruments it allows for a smaller lighter panel

@@EricHaskins71 I love some PA6-CF for this kind of thing, too, but I've more or less moved away from it for most things with the discovery of PolyHex, especially for parts with small features. At the end of the day it comes down to either material properties or finish since all of the above (except PLA) will handle the temperatures and vibration just fine.

Great suggestion, I’m actually redoing the whole fuel system with aluminum fuel lines for a fuel injected 4 stroke I’m going to be installing. For the most part the wiring is all from aircraft spruce and most is 18ga because I bought in bulk with the exception for some higher current circuits. And the adel clamp is a great idea, just looked into it and looks like a great reliable way to secure lines. Will definitely be doing that! Thanks!
