I have a fleet of 5.1 2009. I have titan Ridge with 10g eithernet adapter with 10g switch and now I can use Compressor for final render in a render farm configuration. Add FireWire to a virtual bridge and your getting 1600 mbs/s. I really hated waiting till the morning to post a 10 minute video. Thank God for proxy media. Your my hero! Lastly get an OWC tb3 doc to add power to your cards it helps. I have 3 connected to the 10g eithernet adapterz OWC. Add Vega 56 plus 2 eGPUs with 580s for D-Resolve. Darn you FCP. Open core hurt my feelings.

I can't say the who what or where I stumbled upon OCLP. But as soon as I found I could update my well ALL my Macs things kinda snowballed. First I did dosdude Catalina patch just to get my feet wet. And naturally, if you have an un-flashed PC GPU you don't have a boot screen on your Mac Pro. So going treasure hunting after a day looking in bins I found my apple approved GPU. I must say I didn't have any issues upgrading to Big Sur although I was aiming for Monterey later realizing I haven't upgraded my BT Wi-Fi combo. Big Sur has been speedy so much that I patched every other Mac even my old 2010 MBP runs Big Sur without issue.

Thanks for the video. I have an 09 that I have upgraded as well. 2 x 6 core 3.46ghz, 32 gigs 1333 OWC brand ram, Owc mercury extreme pro ssd for os, and Rx 580. My issue is finding software to utilize the gpu. It sounds like Open Core is the solution to upgrade. Thanks man

I bought two mac pro 2009 for $200 AUS and another one for $50 that was damaged in transport and the handle is bent. I plan to watch your videos and update them and sell one and keep two, one for parts and one to use.

I love this project. Do you mind if I ask how much you've sunk into this machine altogether?
@BenSchubert
@BenSchubert 2 жыл бұрын
Altogether, a little over $3000. But my NVME raid card is probably $1600 of that. The general machine with upgrades and GPU was about $1200. The my 8tb spinning drives are about $200 at the moment. This is all in Canadian dollars too

Thanks, how reliable is Open Core? Did you encounter any issues e.g booting with the MacPro in your daily work? Can you share a comment about speed? Is macOS Big Sur slower than Mojave?

I did get it going. It is reading at about 4000MB/s. Not as fast as I was hoping but still plenty fast for what I need

Hey Ben, nice upgrade. I've a question for you, does the titan ridge need to be powered by the Power Supply ? Thanks
@BenSchubert
@BenSchubert 2 жыл бұрын
Mine isn’t but there may be peripherals that would benefit from it. I mostly only use it for data transfer and to run a Thunderbolt Display.

Greetings Ben, how did you get hardware acceleration with opencore? Did you have to use any additional software? I just recently installed opencore in my Mac Pro and was trying to figure out how to get hardware acceleration working. Does it only work with certain apps? Thanks in advance.
@BenSchubert
@BenSchubert 3 жыл бұрын
The hardware acceleration is specific to video formats like h.265. That’s about it.

Thank you so much, i´m in the same boat. I think this are great machines! You wanna put the 5700xt?? with that gpu and open core i think that performs amazingly well considering the age of this machine. Best regards from Argentina, i hope new content about your upgrades on the mac pro. Or maybe about how you manage content in your machine. Scratch disks and all about that. I´m fighting with my mac pro editing Red 8k footage on davinci... Greetings from argentina!!

Thanks! I’m not sure what gpu I’m going to update to based on availability and compatibility. 5700xt or the 6900xt are what I’m looking at but not likely to do anything at this point in time given the shortages. My machine works for what im doing so this is likely the last upgrade I do for a while

Hi Ben, I have my cMP working with the TitanRidge and thru an USBC cable can I connect my monitor and with the other an external drive that gives me 1Gb/s. It’s really awesome, yes I have it internally connected to the power supplies and the DP connectors to my GPU for video passthru...

I have been trying to network 10g with the titan Ridge. No dice yet. I want to be able to use Compressor to the max. My $12 solution is to create link aggregate with fire wire between 3 computers.

Hi Ben , Thank you for the videos. I have a MacPro 5,1 , OpenCore, bigsur installed already. Recently i have bought Titan Ridge and flashed it properly, im not sure what is the next step to enblae the Thunderbolt in the system ? can you please help me ?
@BenSchubert
@BenSchubert 2 жыл бұрын
I can’t remember all of the titan ridge steps other than: “when in doubt do a P-Ram reset 3 times.” Triple check the online guide that exists on GitHub and when in doubt ask the Facebook group for help. If you aren’t already apart of them, there is one for MacPro upgrades, OpenCore, and the Titan ridge. Best of luck 🤞

Aggiornando l'hardware (CPU GPU RAM) e portarla al massimo, si riesce ad effettuare l'aggiornamento Ufficiale Software della Apple?

You can officially go up to Mojave, but there are other options like Open Core which let you go higher. I am on Big Sur

I've done all upgrades and even added extra power via external source to crank my GPU. But still drags even the most basic timelines. :( Is there anything else I can do to make this system move smoothly when editing in Premier Pro? Like, can I switch out the Logic Board with a 2012 Mac Pro? Equally, I'd love to update to 11.2.3 given I'm able via OpenCore but... can't seem to find a link anywhere online to that specific Mac OS. TY for all the videos ps!!
@BenSchubert
@BenSchubert 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think changing out the logic board is going to help. I have been having troubles with Premiere for a while now. There are definitely file formats that it struggles with. DaVinci Resolve on the other hand works way better. even the free version. These days if Iam working in Premiere I will transcode anything that is not h.264 to Prores

@jbghumanjr 2 жыл бұрын
@@BenSchubert Sigh, mkay... I'm a premiere pro only editor so I guess I'm stuck. Just bummed after doing so much upgrades, etc. the system is still lagging so much as I edit. But it is over a decade old. ty man. Will suffer through until I finally just upgrade to a new MAC.

I have a 2008 and two 2010 cheese graters. The 2008 was gifted to me, the others I bought from a wedding videographer that was expanding and needed to upgrade. I’ve been looking to upgrade to Big Sur because 12 core, 64Gb is still a good machine regardless of age.
