I upgraded my dual-core Pentium laptop CPU to a 9th Gen Core i5 9400 6-core desktop CPU and the results are amazing! This 16.1" 144hz gaming laptop has an LGA1151 socket which takes CPU upgrades. More here: • The $644 GTX 1650 Gami... This laptop sells for $686 here: bit.ly/2LGpxP6 (affiliate link) it's also called the Clevo NB60TA.

What is the wattage limit accepted by the laptop? Could it accept 91w cpus (or even higher) or is just limited to 65w?
@Techtablets
@Techtablets 5 жыл бұрын
Any I think, the issues is the PSU is 150W and if it will handle the power the cooling and VRMs etc. I think it's safer to stick to 65W but if this video does well. I might pull my desktop's 8700K and test it.
@Leo_Vulkan

@@Leo_Vulkan Safe to use 65W TDP more could just burn this VRM. Even normal desktop motherboards has problems with it sometimes, so this notebook definitely can be just broken with a higher power draw CPU.

designing laptops to be super-upgradeable, while also trying to abide by the ever popular trend of designing slimmer mobile devices than the last to please the masses is both hard to do, and is costly in terms of R&D so compromises have to be made in upgradeability - think about it, how many people do you know out of the entire world would even bother to disassemble a laptop for the sake of upgrading the CPU to a better one, when they got better things to do? like buying a better and slimmer device? and having more time dedicated to productive things? if the person who does this sort of activity does it to save money, out of curiousity, or even as a hobby, then i won't judge, because it is a genuinely great way to save money, and it is fun to do, but having it become a standard feature for "all laptops" is a no-go for laptop manufacturers, and ultimately for the companies who designs/provides the parts as well

Hi glad you like it, was fun to make this video as it's something different. Max it can handle is two 16GB sticks or yes 32GB in total. RAM speed 2666Mhz DDR4 but you could get a different PNP 3200Mhz G.Skill kit etc(Not worth it)
@123Suryasis
@123Suryasis 5 жыл бұрын
@@Techtablets Actually it can support 64GB. The 32GB limit is given by manufacturers mainly based on commonly available Ram module size or the max size they sell it with, not by the actual memory support by the Processor. I have upgraded my HP Omen 15t 2018 model (8750H, GTX 1070 MAX-Q) with two Samsung 32GB modules, when they were on sale at $150 and it works fine. In recent years none of the manufacturers artificially limit the max Ram capacity, it is limited by official supported memory by Processor manufacturer.

Very interesting design to have the CPU be user replaceable, although I can see the design nightmare it probably is. Especially with having to use desktop CPU's. Where usually tech companies here are always build consumer trust by selling low-mid range products first and gradually high end products later (and most of them survived to this day). Chris, you should warm the paste up a little before you apply it. (I leave it in my armpit for a minute seems to work!) It becomes more malleable with some warmth. Also +1 on spreading it, I've always maintained better results from full coverage spreading about 0.5mm. as smooth as you can get it with the applicator... an old expired credit card in my case works well. Like a thermal butter knife! Great review as usual m8, Now, I'd love to see a system like this come out with an AM4 platform! That would be bang-for-buck game-on with those Ryzen 3gen DT APUs. Even utilise a cheap eGPU enclosure if the Vega doesn't cut it. I've used Kryonaut TG recently to repaste my 390X gpu and in comparison to a few others, it has been the best. Got another year or so from that card I hope. Temps dropped around 8-10c average. The old paste was like limescale! the VRMs and core temp went from 94c throttle max to about 67-85c. That's good for a 368TDP card!

This new TP is great, amazing result. I think with my old IC diamond I use to use it would have been much hotter.

A higher tdp by 10w or 20w with triple the core count isn´t a bad trade off considering that you are getting the same thing but with double the cores on an older socket. The only thing that surprised me a little if not could be better would be removing the IHS from the cpu and the results are more likely going to be even better even if means you have to take things into account depending on the cooling solution.

@@Techtablets Ask ebay cause everyone who killed his cpu needs one and new ones are more expensive. The new ones first get cheaper and after a year the price can get up. Same for many electric house appliances like the electric window shutters. If you have 10 window shutters on your home and one and another dies after 18 years it becomes hard to get spare units or refurbished ones. Prices of used one reached that of new ones and so I bought 10 new ones with a central smarthome computer for 20% less money than 18 years ago. Then I put them in pieces, used alcohol cleaner to get the dirt of decades away and sold the 8 used ones on ebay one by one for a lot more than the complete new system of 10 + computer had cost. All the new battery devices from house alarm to ... go that way if they are part of a brand cause manufacturer runs out of units and can't tell the customer house alarm system is dead after one window sensor broke please buy a new one.

There is actually only really 3 wrong ways to apply thermal paste. The 1st is if you don't apply enough, the 2nd is if you apply so much it spills onto the motherboard and the thermal paste is electrically conductive, and the 3rd is if you put so much thermal paste that it fills the entire socket and can't go anywhere making it an insulator. Don't ask me how you could do that last one on accident lol.

But in reality, does it actually matter? How many people buy a gaming laptop with the expectation of playing Witcher 3 on max for hours on end in the middle of a field?? I don't know for sure but at a guess, I'd say anyone that buys a gaming laptop to play games has it connected to a power socket 99% of the time. This being so, who actually needs a 'mobile' CPU that runs at 2.1 MHz because when you're gaming, the CPU will run to its highest rated speed. IMO, this is why the Maibenben makes absolute sense.

@@Techtablets Not a good idea especially when that heatsink is cooling a moderately powerful GPU as well. I don't have experience with laptop CPU Upgrade but worked on very small form factor computers like Lenovo Thinkstation Tiny and Dell optiplex micro, rated to work with 35W TDP CPU. My Thinkstation Tiny supports 35W 8th and 9th Gen T series CPU and it has 8700T along with Quadro P1000 graphics (50W TDP). I tried 8700k and there were lots of issues due to Power and thermals...frequent shut downs and the whole system was getting very hot, even with a reasonably large heatsink, compared to your laptop's heatsink. The reason is that Intel calculates TDP based on all cores running at base clock speed and actual TDP goes over 80 Watt during load. For 8700k, it will be reaching over 90 Watt during load, when the CPU will use turbo boost, and the tiny heatsink was having hard time to keep it cool. Even if it runs in your case, high chance that it may fry something in the motherboard.
