Snappy Dogs is a little off-grid hot dog stand co-owned by Amy's sister. In part 2 of this two part video, we had to replace the Xantrex PWM charge controller with a Blue Sky Energy MPPT charge controller to use a 20V solar panel with the 12V battery. We go over the schematic showing how everything is connected together.

Someone pointed out a mistake, so I fixed it and released. We had some good comments, so I copied them here. Rev John O'Toole what panels would work with a 24 volt battery bank with the SOLAR BOOST 3024IL SOLAR CHARGE CONTROLLER great job by the way K9 You could get a 72 cell panel (larger than what is on this video) which is a 24 volt panel. The 72 cell panels are rather large and hard to handle alone. You could also have two 72 cell panels in parallel. You would not be able wire two 60 cell, 20 volt panels (like the ones you saw in the video) in series. Too many volts. One panel (or two panels in parallel) doesn't provide enough voltage unless you can get an MPPT controller than lowers the amps and increases the volts. Very few controllers do that, but it is an option. The 60 cell panels are at about the maximum size for one person to handle fairly easily. If you aren't strong enough for a 72 cell panel and don't have help, two 36 cell, 12 volt panels wired in series will work, too. Three 12 volt panels in series would be too much for the 3024. You could use four 12 volt panels: Two sets of two panels each wired in series making in effect two 24 volt panels then wiring those two sets in parallel. It may sound confusing, but it isn't. All I'm doing is adding the amps and volts separately then comparing those numbers to the rated capacities of of the 3024 stated on the Blue Sky Energy website. A bonus for the 12 volt panels is you often get free shipping if you don't have a local place to purchase solar panels. Larger panels are shipped via truck freight ($$$). Hopefully, AltE will chime in and correct any misstatements I may have made. Good to get a second opinion. Get the controller with the remote panel built in; you really should have some basic information from your panels. Better yet get the Remote Pro; not a necessity, but nice to have. That's the long explanation, but it is all the options I can think of. Also need to know how much roof space and the shape of the roof you have to maybe narrow it down. Are you considering upgrading in the future? All that info will help you make the best decision. Rev John O'Toole Rev John O'Toole thanks, I bought this controller for $75 at a restore store, it's already installed in battery bank with temp sensor. just haven't bought panels yet. basically taking baby steps when I more more effort into battery bank and inverter setup so I can have power for emergencies. until budget allows solar purchase. the panel will be ground mount but that won't be on this controller. thanks for the handling tip, because I'm pretty sure I can't lift a 72 cell. altE Spot on, thanks for that great reply. The SB3024IL can output up to 30A for a 24V system, so the solar panels can be up to around 720W (30A x 24V). The max volts in from the panels is 57V. That's Voc, taking temperature into consideration. Rev John is in New England, so needs to figure on extreme cold. So the Voc should be multiplied by at least 1.2. So a 72 cell panel with a Voc of 45.3V x 1.2 = 54.36V. So as you said, only strings of 1. So he could do up to two 360W 24V panels in parallel. Or, multiple parallel strings of two 12V panels in series, adding up to 720W. It does take 2 people to manage a 72 cell panel.

How do you feel about the “Blue Sky 2512iX-HV Series 12V/25A MPPT Charge Controller “ ran with the “ IPNProRemote “. And “ Magnum Energy MS4024-L-U 4000 Watt Sine Wave Inverter With Charger “ And what size solar panels should I be running with this?

Lot of respect great video my one disappointment I was really watching to see the difference in maximum PV in amps from the new panel in comparison to the old ones but you just glance over it

kinda disappointed at no hot tub install, but I'm OK with it because it would be hard to have 1 panels put on the roof of that little hut

Just finished watching most of your videos and it just occurred to me one item you didn't cover was how to disconnect a solar panel string(s) coming into a combiner box in an emergency situation. Take Houston, for example, panels and combiner boxes would be energized with no means of disconnect.

Excellent suggestion. We do carry many rapid shutdown products, www.altestore.com/store/enclosures-electrical-safety/electrical-enclosures/rapid-system-shutdown-components-c1255/ I've done 1 or 2 videos on some of them, I definitely need to do some more. Thanks, I'm moving them up the list. The good news is that any microinverter or DC optimizer system will shut down automatically when the grid goes out, but string inverters do need a button pushed to turn them off to the roof. And battery based systems are a whole other ball of wax.

Bob, it depends on how many volts are going to the combiner box. I have two 20 volt panels wired in parallel with about 22+ amps using MC4 connectors not a combiner box. I use one Blue Sea 30 amp circuit breaker (the continuous duty one not the cheap intermittent duty one) to disconnect the panels from the charge controller. However, even if my panels had a dead short, it would be fine as they don't produce enough electricity to melt the wires nor is there a concern for people or animals being shocked. Not enough juice. Are the panels you are referring to (if you are in fact referring to a specific set up) wired in series or parallel or series/parallel? I'm not sure how many volts DC would start to be a concern with arcing. 24 volts shouldn't be a problem, but 48 might be. You could also use the low tech method of tarping or otherwise blanketing the panels themselves. That will prevent any concerns you have no matter the setup.

12 volt in a house with no inverter.. You guys are the best ever! Please don't point out how stupid this install is, especially for the price... let me guess.. Democrat right?

It's in a mobile hot dog stand that is running a radio, DC lights, fan, DC water pump, charging cell phones and their iPad. What do we need an inverter for? The price was terrific since we didn't spend money on equipment we didn't need. Seems like the conservative way to go.
