Using a SSD with 1GB RAM will kill the ssd quickly because it is performing lot of data write cyles when the system has 1 GB RAM. Also running the system with 2GB RAM and a mechanical drive is so much painful. It takes 2 minutes to boot. I think upgrading both is the best if I had to.

IMO, RAM clock "matter" if you overclock the CPU. Example: i7-2700K will be stable at around 4.4GHz with 1333-1600MHz RAM. 4.7GHz is possible to reach with 2133-2400MHz. And yea DDR2/DDR3 work "around 20,000MB/s" so a lost/increase of ram frequency isn't perceptible for most of the time

HA! I just did a similar upgrade to my mother's Lenovo G40-45. She'd been complaining "my Windows has been really slow". I come to find out she bought herself a laptop from a friend with all of 1.35Ghz (AMD E1-6010) to power 32 bits of Windows 10, 2GB of 1600MHz DDR3 RAM and a 512GB Toshiba 5400 RPM hard disk. 🤦 So I upgraded her RAM to 12 GB (I had an old 4GB one lying around + bought an 8GB just for her), replaced the HDD with SATA3, ripped out the DVD drive and slaved the Toshiba HDD (now she has 1TB total storage), installed 64 bit Windows 10 then, for good measure, threw out her 802.11n Realtek WiFi card for an Intel AX210. She probably didn't need all of that but, at least, her "Windows" is now useable. And it's kinda fun breathing new life to a slow old system like that. Now I'm just waiting for the brand new battery to arrive.

Michael, thanks to following your videos I was able to install Windows 11 on an old Sony Vaio Laptop which originally gave me the hardware not compatible message and with a low spec ( Core 2 Duo CPU / 4 Gb DDR2 RAM / 5400 rpm HDD ) and honestly? I been very pleased with the overall performance and responsiveness if I am honest, I even previously had Linux Mint on it and find currently Win 11 to be quite usable, in fact this machine which is a spare is now a lot more fun to use and surprisingly responsive. So far so good, I even activated it using a Win10 activation script 😜 and EVEN subscriber to the Window's Insiders for Dev Release tier, NO IDEA that will even work but should be fun finding out. 😂😎

It worked beautifully on Win7, i could watch KZfaq @1080/60 fps no problem although it was almost pegging the cpu it stayed around 85-90%...then MS ended 7 support and so i had to put Win10 on it. it works ok still. but i can only play youtube at 720/60fps and 1080/30. 2GB of ram user here! I had this computer for over 6 years now, it has a Pentium G640 and just 2GB of ram, and until now it has been able to run all versions of windows from 7 to 10 in x64, of course, with modding, bypass, overclock, and all that stuff, but it has been a good machine, I'm planning in upgrading it to 4GB, but over all it's fine.

If I owned this laptop, I would first consider on upgrading the HDD hard drive to an SSD hard drive. I would rather do that over a RAM upgrade, but I would also buff up the RAM to the maximum possible upgrade level so that this old laptop performs smoothly and at its best possible performance when running Windows 11.

It would be good to check how it runs with 4GB RAM in day to day tasks, like web browsing, watching youtube, social network, office tasks..., maybe some old-school/indie gaming... And it's not just curiosity's sake, but real opportunity to alive an old laptop.

@@jbritain Windows 10 earlier versions loved SSD. It wouldn’t even respond on 5400rpm drives at times. It was later alleviated. However, there was never an 8GB ram requirement for smooth experience. If anything, it is ironic how Windows 10, a desktop OS, is smoother with 4GB of RAM than Android with the same amount of RAM.

I would upgrade the ram first I have a dell G620 that I have been fixing/cleaning up, it had a dead battery and a wrong charger so I replaced it with a new battery and a new 65W dell charger, it originally had a T2300E (Dual core 1.66GHz) and 2GB DDR2 667MHz so I flashed the bios to the latest version which is A10 then I upgraded the cpu to T7400 (Dual core 2.16GHz) and the ram to 4GB 667Mhz, I also replace the thermal paste with MX-4 and clean out the cpu cooler/fan with compressed air, also the upgrades was cheap for a fun mini project :3

I think the reason that the hard drive slowed down the computer so much, is A: it's an old drive with slower read speeds, and B: it has one GBs of memory, which means it needs to page the hard drive real hard. The SSD made the system more responsive, if this theory is correct, by increasing the speed at which Windows could access paged memory on the storage drive. Ah, of course he mentions this too.
