Great video! Just purchased the Z Grills 7002B pellet smoker and I'm thinking of upgrading the controller to the PID controller from Smoke Daddy Inc.

Just got my Z-Grills this past Friday ... great tip on the hopper flexing issue. I noticed the same thing. I filled the hopper with 20# of pellets (probably a bit over zealous, but I'm a newbie :-D ) and I noticed the same thing --- LOTS of flex in that side steel when you lift that end to move the grill. I think even with the larger washers you used, I'm concerned that they would pull-through or weaken that side steel over time. I keep my grill in my garage, so I have to lift/move it to a better ventilated area anytime I use it. So, I'm concerned with what all that lifting and flexing will do over time. I was thinking about trying to mount some type of wheels on the hopper-side to take-away the need to lift to move, but haven't gotten that far in my tinkering yet. Great video on the PID upgrade too!

Thanks for Watching John! The new 2021 7002F2 has caster wheels in front which makes moving around much easier. My old 7002F2 got plenty of use and I didn’t notice any other issues with it. The 2021 model now includes a PID, 24 pound hopper and pellet clean out. It’s an awesome Pellet Grill!

FYI - When selecting High mode the controller runs the auger continuously for max temp and doesn’t use PID to control to a temp. Select Mid mode & then set temp for PID control to a temp. In addition Smoke mode does a timed release of pellets to generate maximum smoke and is not PID controlled.

Gotta get me that controller. Just bought a Blind Box not that long ago. Only used it twice. Burnt some of the powder coat of the base in front some how. Think some grease caught fire when I went to clean it. Not a fan of the grease tray and small bucket. One packer brisket overflowed the tiny pail.

Usually the old school timing controller doesn’t bug me, but I got the traeger scout and the temp swings are out of this world. The tiny grill doesn’t do well with the timing algorithm. Thinking about swapping the controller for the PID controller

Did you notice a faster response time or better speeds to heat up etc? One of my pellet grills is incredibly slow, while the other has an old controller, from way back when, and is much much faster. I’d love to buy another old controller, but not sure when to buy from. Maybe smoke daddy would be faster too?

It looked too me that the old controller had a fuse that was only accessible when it was removed? The new one looked too have access too the fuse on the front panel? This could be a huge time saver in troubleshooting, not too mention someone not realizing that a quick change of a fuse a few years down the road, might be the difference between fixing it or hauling it off as junk. 👍
@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ
@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Jeff! Good catch! Never thought of that, you are correct. The Smoke Daddy PID Controller has a fuse accessible from the outside of the controller. The Z grills fuse is on the back side of the controller, in order to access you need to remove the controller. Trouble shooting much easier on the Smoke Daddy PID Controller

I'm new to your channel and love your content! The lid vent on my dad's kettle is flattening out over the years. I know I can order him a new one, but I was wondering if you had a trick or process to reshaping that top vent so that it makes a seal again on the lid. Thanks!

Thanks for Watching Tim! Yes it should work, not sure how compatible it is with the sheet metal, might need to modify the smoker to fit. To shut it down press the power button to off and it will cycle the fan for 15 minutes to cool the grill down.

stock controller has a set point and turns on to reach that set point and then turns off. this results in swings (which can be big depending). PID monitors the temp like every 4 secs and adjusts accordingly. the stock controller also has no fan speed control it just runs. The smoke daddy adjusts the fan speed as well
