Upgrading to Amphion One15 || ft PSI, PMC, Eve Audio

Why and how we chose the new studio monitors for our studio. This was a difficult one to make.. I don't like video reviews of studio monitors but I thought it may be helpful to explain the thought process behind our upgrade.
A couple of points I forgot to mention in the video:
- Most of the speakers I mention were above our budget (2500-3000)
- I ended up buying only the speakers but I plan to add the Amphion amp as soon as possible
- We didn't get to listen to the Barefoot Footprint 02 but I think it would be a bit too much for our room

NIce to hear your justification process. The reason why the Amphions sound so much bigger for the size of the box is the rear passive radiator.

Thanks! Yes, I think you are correct about the radiator. To be perfectly clear, they do sound as small speakers of course, but I think that is exactly what drew us to them as tools (faster transients, more manageable low end)!

Great video.I am sharing the same opinion since I am using my one 15's for year and a half.They are neutral and this helps you a lot while mixing.Also the amp is very crucial about how they sound.I have tested different amps but I will buy the Amp 500.

Yes the change to the Behringer amp was quite a downgrade from the one we demoed, and we plan to upgrade as soon as we can! We are considering either the Amp100 or the 700..

Since you have the One 15: I highly, highly recommend getting a used YBA amp(either the Integre or the Passion Integre). I use mine with an Integre after trying a few different power amps and the difference is PHENOMENAL. So so much more detail with the Integre, I literally hear distortion as a separate sound from the music, the clarity is just incredible. And it’s also simultaneously the most musical amp I’ve tried, you just don’t want to stop listening to it. Give it a shot!

@@TrailOfSound Yeah, hopefully you can find one to try! I don’t know much about the current YBA amps, so I can only vouch for the two ones I mentioned. Good luck!

If you’re going to look at YBA, look at Sugden. But these class A amps are what the creator of Amphions said to me once as “wishy washy” and “inaccurate, especially in the bass”. I heard the Sugden A21 on my One18s and didn’t feel confident mixing.

Thanks for adding your knowledge! Truth is after some research I am a bit sceptical about going with an other brand amplifier especially having tested the Amp700 and knowing it delivers what I want. So I think I’ll just wait a bit more to raise the budget and get that one since I know it works..

no it is not actually haha. Sound engineering is giving the coherence to a mix while maintaining it's musicality and feelings. No exact techniques but so many depending on the engineer and the songs themselves, so again nothing exact which is the contrary of what science actually is !!! Sound Engineering is more an art actually.

Great review and your English is very good i must say. Maybe try a subwoofer (or 2) with these rather than buying another set of speakers? That way you can have bass off or on as when needed and keep the same tone etc.

I am also considering this, I am researching subwoofers, because unfortunately the amphion one is really expensive.. So far however for the genres that I work on, I haven’t felt the need for one. Have you tried any subwoofer that have you the extra frequencies without being overpowering?

Great job with the video my friend. I’m highly considering the One15’s for mixing but I’m used to a “bigger” sound like Barefoots or Genelecs. Would you say that your ear needs training compared to if you would go in the direction of Barefoot or Neumann KH310?

Thanks! I can’t compare with either the Barefoot or the Neumann since I haven’t listened to them myself. I would say that they need a bit of getting used to, but my transition from the Shape Twins was really fast and seamless, I was already comfortable with the test pair. In general they sound smaller yes, but for mixing and my room it wasn’t a bad thing at all..

@@TrailOfSound yeah I’ve heard you need to take time with these as well but it’s worth it from most reviews/tests users have done. Just want to get a good mix across all mediums but I tend to work in hip-hop/lofi sound genre so I’m worried I won’t grasp these to my ears

For the Amphion and the Eve Sc3070, which one do you think is more accurate for mixing?

Both are very accurate, but my experience with the amphions is that they "guide" you in a way while mixing. Also I have been working on them for about two months and I rarely use the other sets of speakers that I have here, I have come to trust them very much (although I am still learning them). The Eves sounded a bit more relaxed to my ears (I love the Eve sound ever since I had the SC205), more all around I think, but they didn't have the same analytical way of presenting things to my ears. However, all this comes from listening to various things on them for about an hour, while on the Amphions I've already done more than 10 mixes. So, it is not a fair comparison, I would love to have worked on the Eves as well to be able to form a more complete opinion. If there's anything else I can help with feel free to ask!

@@TrailOfSound thanks so much for the reply, i own a sc205 too, but i found the sound always shows a bit better than true sound like you talk about in the video. I'm thinking of upgrading between the sc3070 and the one18, unluckly my country doesn't have shop for me to compare it. I think monitors for mixing and mastering is most important for me. 3way cheaper vs a 2way😂 So if for mixing only, do you prefer the amphion One?

Oh cool! So you are also familiar with the Eve sound😁! If you find the Eves flattering, I think you will like the Amphions. They won’t sound right if it isn’t right, and the few things I’ve done on them have translated beautifully so far. Don’t dismiss the One15 it is a bit different to the One18 (more forward sounding which I loved). But it depends on your taste and genres you work on, the One18 is a more all around speaker from my experience with them, but we chose the One15s and couldn’t be happier. (Also you can contact Amphion directly, they were very helpful when I asked them about what speaker to choose for my situation and they answered really quickly)

Hello, thanks! For the duration of my demo I used an all-Amphion setup provided by the dealers here. One15-Amp700-Amphion cables. But after I bought them I have been using them with a Behringer A500 and regular 14awg cable that I bought, while I’m saving to buy their amp. Hope that’s helpful!

Great video!! What about the genelec Ones? 8331/8341 ? Why not those? Also did you guys try the new PMC6? :D

Thanks!! Well, the PMC6 weren’t out at the time we were testing speakers.. About the Genelecs, I wasn’t a big fan of their older series, and the Ones were stretching the budget quite a bit. (We were supposed to stay under the 3000€ threshold) However I am curious to listen to them as I’ve seen many people swear by them!

I have an even smaller room than yours (12x11 feet) and I am also looking for a surgical tool. Would the one15s be good enough? Also since there is no overload protection/limiters, are there any risks?

Depending on the type of music they can be amazing for mixing, as we work more and more on them I like them even better. So far we haven’t had an issue with the absence of peak protection, although we are careful especially when tracking..

How is the low end of One18 compared to Eve Sc3070?

It’s been a while since I listened to them and it was in different rooms. From what I remember the Eves seemed to go lower, while the Amphions were tighter.

Hello! My room is 5x2.7x2.8 meters (LxWxH) (16.4x8.8x9.5 feet). We also listened to the One 18s and we all prefered the smaller ones in this space. Our room has an issue around 80hz and the one 15s responded better here. Hope it helps!

@@TrailOfSound Thanks for your time! I generally prefer smaller monitors for mixing, even in larger rooms. They just sound familiar. I'm currently in a similar size room as you, however will be moving into something substantially bigger soon. 17ft by 23ft to be exact. Would these One15 still be suitable? Or would you move to the One18 at that point? What do you guys think? I don't have the opportunity to test and will probably have to be sticking with whatever I end up getting.

I don’t think we will change the One15s even if we moved to a bigger room. In comparison with the One18s, they sound less impressive but somehow they gave us more insight in the mixes. More mid forward and faster transients because of the smaller woofer I guess? Even some guys who have the Two18s with the subwoofers told us they wanted to add the One15s because of this. So I think it’s more of a matter of taste, the One18s were bigger sounding, filled the room better and in general a bit softer, while the One15s are more forward and analytical. If you also like smaller speakers I don’t think you’ll go wrong with the One15s!

@@TrailOfSound Nice! that's exactly what I wanted to hear. I'm looking for something to guide me into making the right decisions, near field. I can always grab bigger, less expensive speakers if I wanted to have a client hear louder volume filling the room.

A big part of the decision was the fact that, with the amphions we had the chance to try them in our space and also work on them for some time.. So there were no surprises related to our room. If we had the chance to try both here I honestly don’t know which we would get, but after a year with the amphions I am very happy with my choice!

No, I am very happy with how they sound without it and I didn’t like very much what sonarworks did with the previous speakers.. So we just worked with the placement and got to a point where we are really happy!

Might as well be selling soap or motor oil since you do not even have the courtesy to demonstrate the sound of the monitors. This is the third One15 video I've seen that is talk talk talk and no sound from the monitors. I guess I'll stick with PMC and ATC. I was seriously thinking of buying a pair of One15, but I don't do "talk shows" and don't need the verbal massage.

You aren’t wrong, but I don’t see the point of demonstrating the sound of the monitors through a microphone.. The only way that would be of any use, would be if I had the chance to have multiple monitors here side by side, which wasn’t possible in my case.

@@TrailOfSound I may be the odd one, but I can tell quite a bit from the audio of a cellphone video of speakers or production. And it is a whole lot easier than trying to arrange or ship demo speakers, something I have never done. Thanks. Oh and believe me, with my level of experience (pardon) I do not need the testimonial talk talk. I once stayed up all night and did 50 pages of measurement showing that a mixer EQ was inaccurate, and then published it. Had the whole company jumping out of bed, making demands and yelling at each other. And believe me. they deserved it.
