This channel is excellent. Thank you for these videos.I have a 40mm, a 32, a 25, a 17, a 6.3 and a 2X Barlow. I can do 400X power/magnification, I guess, with my OMCON 8". Brand new at this, but I'm pretty happy with what I got. Upgrades are always on the menu. Honestly, my first upgrade will be collimating it properly.
@joshsansone5113
@joshsansone5113 7 ай бұрын
The 8" diameter would be capable of achieving 400x magnification in ideal atmospheric conditions. (50x per inch of aperature in ideal conditions). In reality, something in the 30x to 40x per inch of aperature will be the ideal useful max for your telescope on most nights. Staying in a maximum magnification range of 240-320x will likely produce clearer/crisper images. You can push your magnification out further, and the image may appear larger. At the same time, the image will also appear fainter and more washed out. Remember that less magnification is usually better. Enjoy your new hobby.

i know this is an older video... but provided you dont have a tiny or junk scope, my 1st upgrade would be to a 2 inch focuser and then a good barlow. the barlow will turn 3 eyepieces into 6(or more) and actually allow you to get better quality eyepieces. once i got my 1st 32mm 2" WA eyepiece...there was no going back to 1.25 unless there is no other option. they are just fantastic!

extremely helpful. once I realized that the smaller ex: 7.5 mm lens would give me more range, I was thinking, then why would I want to diminish that with a Barlow. Then you explained the Barlow acts on the telescopes focal length not the lens. NOW I see how the Barlow increases the magnification! so I have a 1200 mm XT8 if I am correct, the Barlow 2x increases that to 2400 mm focal length, so when I use a 7.5 mm fixed lens, that gives me a magnification of 320?
@RocketPlanet
@RocketPlanet 13 жыл бұрын
@IAreCrazyChris Hi there, if by 'smaller' you mean shorter focal length, then yes you're spot on. Clearly the physical size of the eyepiece is not the issue: we've got very short focal length eyepieces in our showroom that are the size and weight of a Melon! It's the FL (focal length) that counts, the shorter the eyepiece FL the more times it can be mathematically divided into the FL of the telescope and thus deliver higher magnification. Thanks for watching. JM A&NC

Its actually a present for my 9yr old daughter but I I've been doing some reading on the subject so I can help out, and got the bug as well it seems . My question is a bit generic, but assuming I'm looking for a particular magnification say 50 , what is it better... to get it directly with the correct eyepiece or to use a Barlow to get to that magnification ?

For my SkyWatcher Heritage 130P, as the initial eyepiece upgrade, I purchased the basic SkyWatcher Eyepiece and Filter Kit. The 15mm Kellner eyepiece in the kit quickly supplanted the supplied 25mm for general viewing. Even with having since bought eyepieces of better quality and higher power than it, it's still my goto eyepiece for simply looking at the sky, looking for anything I want to observe in more detail. Unfortunately, the 6mm Plossl in the kit, I found to be too dim, to use for anything other than looking at the moon.

Hi - The (thinly!) gold plated scope is a rare Meade 2045 SCT and is a marketing prototype produced at Meade's Irvine factory in the late 1980s to early 1990s to 'test the water' for exotic finishes. They made a handful of silver ones too. They never went into production - probably a good thing on the whole. KR A&NTV

I'm debating btwn the orion starmax 90mm or the orion starblast 4.5. It's a present for my husband. He wants to see the moon and planets very clear. I know the starmax is best for this , but read the starblast 4.5 has more aperture which brings more light. My question is : if I get a barlow for the starblast 4.5 it will give me the focal length of the starmax 90mm? And therefore I'll see planets better than the starmax 90 with a Barlow? Or should I just get the starmax 90mm and get a barlow. ? I'm not sure if I can use a barlow with this model because it already has a high focal length.

What about Kellner eyepieces that were made by Orion about twenty years ago? I have a couple of old Kellners that seem to be of decent quality even though they have the .965 barrels not often used with today's telescopes. I use them with an adapter in a 1.25" focuser, which is in my Orion 5" reflector. They perform about as well the newer 1.25" eyepieces that were supplied with my telescope.

These videos are great, they helped me a lot. I consider myself kinda lucky because my first telescope was shipped 3 plossl eyepieces, 40mm, 17mm and 10mm. Sadly I didn't get a barlow with them, but I'll be sure to buy a 2x barlow as soon as I can. The telescope is 500mm in focal length, 114mm in aperture, so it should do well enough to see Jupiter, I believe.
@Astrofrank
@Astrofrank 6 жыл бұрын
If it is the Bresser Pluto/S, Jupiter will not look well at higher magnification, as the telescope suffers from spherical aberration. If it is the Sky-Watcher with parabolic mirror, use a good Barlow lens and well-corrected eyepieces. Many Barlow lenses that come with telescopes are of inferior quality.

@iviajorjacobs9829
@iviajorjacobs9829 8 жыл бұрын
+ruuub Jupiter looks best at around 85 to 150x. Deep sky objects such as nebula and galaxies usually require low power eyepieces, but there are exceptions. Your scope is probably not quit big enough to see Neptune and Triton, but for Saturn, mars, and maybe Uranus you will need a lot of magnifaction, Id say around 150x. I have an 8inch dob and I am able to see the ring divisions on Saturn and faint clouds on it as well, and features and ice caps on mars at around 170x. You can still see Saturn and its rings at lower mag. but for ring details and surface details requires atleast 160x

+Haakon Johansen for Jupiter detail can easily be seen with a 14mm eyepiece and below. Get a wide fov eyepiece not a plossl. For venus maybe a 10mm. For mars and Saturn you will need atleast 160x to get the views you want, so I would go with either a high power maybe 6 to 7mm eyepiece or just couple a barlow with a 14mm. Check out explore scientifics website. I bought 2 of their eyepieces and they are the best I have ever used.

I lucked out, I got from Craigslist, for $150, a used 6" meade newtonian with 25mm amd 6mm plossel eyepieces, and a 2x barlow... was missing a tripod bolt, I replaced with a trip to the hardware store... was also a little dusty and mirrors needed to be cleaned but theyre in great condition, and it's in pretty much perfect collimation and works great... I think I'm gonna get a 10mm next, would like something between the 25 with barlow (12.5mm effectively) and the 6... if its a lot better than the ones I have then I'll probably also get a 30'ish also... super wide angle is awesome sometimes, bit so it super zoom... but mostly I'm using the 25mm with the 2x barlow, a d wish I had just a bit more.... I hate the 6mm not enough eye relief for my glasses... I never use it...

Simon Plössl was Austrian, but the umlaut is not common in English speaking countries, so it is often replaced by an "o". The ETX 80 is better in wide-field work than at high magnification.

+tillsy23 get some explore scientific eyepieces. Your scope is big enough to really enjoy deep sky objects. Id say get around a 11mm 82 degree and a 20 to 24 68 degree fov. Get a nice barlow to go with it and your good to go.

If it is a Dobsonian, use well-corrected wide-field eyepieces (TeleVue, Explore Scientific), otherwise the Baader Hyperion Zoom is great. Okay, its great anyway. If to decide between Hyperion 10 mm and Pentax 8.5 mm, use the latter.

What are you viewing? A 12" dob is easily capable of getting a good image at 150x magnification, even with the basic plossls that usually ship with skywatcher scopes. Have you checked the collimation? And if trying to get planetary views how far above the horizon are you looking? Atmospheric interference will ruin your view even if the telescope and eyepieces are perfect.

So is the size of the eye lense a bit of a red herring? Logic would say a 20mm is better than a 10mm, but then is a 10mm more powerful than a 20mm? Let's use the Moon. Would I get a closer shot of the moon with my 4 or 10mm that came with my scope rather than my 20mm? Thanks!
@Alk6239
@Alk6239 9 жыл бұрын
Hi. I will attempt to answer this for you. For starters, the lower the MM, the higher the magnification. A simple way of calculating the magnification of a particular eyepiece and telescope is divide the telescopes focal length by the MM of the lens. So hypothetically mine is a 1000mm focal length telescope. I have a 8mm eyepiece. this gives me 1000/8=125. So for that particular lens the magnification is 125. For a 3mm it is 1000/3 which gives us about 285. Now, every telescope has an "effective" amount of magnification and every telescope will hit different points at which more magnification will just equal a worse viewing experience. But this is not to say that a 3.5mm lens is any better than a 8mm. They serve very different purposes with the 3.5 being very good for planetary and the 8mm for something requiring a bit more of a distance. So to answer your question, yes you would get a closer view of the moon with a 4mm lens, but would that be an acceptable viewing experience? it depends on the telescope, your alignment and the atmospheric conditions of the night.

I have an old MIJ Meade MA9mm and when I use it with my ES 2x focal extender (183x) it gives great crisp clear views of planets , I actually like it unbarlowed also...I like the views much better than my 5mm TMB PII (unbarlowed 165x) The TMB sufferes from a white halo scattered around the planet lowering contrast, I have inspected it and found cleaning solution swirls in the shape of a nautilus shells pattern on the inside of the lens, that could be the cause because the planets aberrate slightly when moving across the fov , but it is out of warranty and can not be returned.

Is low the number more closer the object ?
@STho205
@STho205 7 жыл бұрын
clydeburkey. Yes the lower the number the greater the magnification and the smaller the field/area of view. Magnification = scopeFocalLength /EyePieceFL. 900mm / 10mm = 90x. Mag x is useful for seeing planet detail, bad for stars as you want to see more of the star field and stars won't ever magnify for detail anyway. They stay points of light. Don't magnify too much for your telescope or the image will distort horribly based on its diameter. About 30x per inch or 12x per cm is my rule of thumb. 144mm wide scopes limits you to about 180x. 300mm mirrors can allow 360x magnification. Smaller scopes can sometimes do better in a rural sky in winter as they look through less area of atmosphere, thus less volume of the column of air to space.

Yes the lower the number, the closer the object is in the eye piece. It also appears bigger.

What's the difference between plossl and kellner
@thor2792
@thor2792 5 жыл бұрын
A plossl uses 4 pieces of glass, a kellner uses 3. A plossl has better contrast, a larger field of view and is of higher quality. Most telescopes should come with plossls as the very minimum in quality. If you have kellners, you should really upgrade.

Would a Meade 6.4 mm 4000 series Super Plossl eyepiece be compatible with a Celestron 60LCM Computerized Telescope?the 60LCM is a refractor.

+Sotiris Krol Hi - whilst the eyepiece will function, if you haven already upgraded the eyepieces that came with the scope, particularly the 10mm (assuming it to be a standard MA type), strongly recommend that you do this first - rather than go for a maximum magnification eyepiece. Your instrument is capable of around 100 to 120x magnification at the most. The 6.4mm will deliver 109x and it's unlikely that the views will please you most of the time. Look for a good 12 or 15mm Plossl as it will give you good views most of the time with your scope, and used with a good 2x Barlow - when the target conditions permit - it will give you comfortable and pleasing high powered views as well. I hope this helps. KR RJD ANTV

+Sotiris Krol Id say upgrade to a bigger scope tbh. Get atleast a 6 inch. I had a 6inch dob, but wasn't 100% happy with it, so I upgraded to an 8inch and it is amazing and doesn't even cost 400 usd

Eyepieces are huge. Especially if you purchased a lower end scope. You most likely got crappy eyepieces. Unless you got a Zhumell. Then you probably got some ok eyepieces to start with.

I think the most affordable way to get into quality eyepieces is to get a one very good say 25mm lens and then just get 1 or 2 barlow lenses rather than just buy a set of expensive eyepieces. Unless theres some advantage to using a high power eyepiece over a low power with a barlow that im not aware of

@maximreed3981: Those from the top brands are probably ok but they will never be as good as a non-zoom (just like camera lenses).

Ok boss I'm 63 years old. Pupils size 5mm. Have a 82 mm with 470 focal length, interested in planetary view for the most part I also wear glasses. I need long eye relief, money is an issue but no problem in the hundred dollar range. Tell me what's your recommendation make me a believer lots of charlatans out there.

Always mention focal length or focal ratio. For a 127 mm Mak, I would recommend Plössl, for a 130 mm Newtonian, Planetary, Flat Field and NED should be better.

Hey , i went and took a look , it was late night , messing around , fishing for stars, and i see the bright one , let me go there , i take 25mm eyepiece only ,on 114/500mm Cheep Reflector , copy of Skywatchers , same thing basicly , and i saw it , doubled the magnification , and there are 4 more stars around it , turns out that its Jupiter . i took some pictures , but i dont think moons are on them , so i was going to ask you, but took a look on google ,its jupiter 100% , crisp and clear . On the moments i could see the stripes on it . Can you tell me now , with my scope 114mm reflector , is that about the limit , about what i should see , even with the cheapest optics , like Chinese . 2x Barlow doesn't even work, its some magnification, but not double , and all detail is gone , 10mm peace doesn't magnify as much , looks similar, 10mm + 2x Barlow , magnify s but again low detail , low light , so quality with both with or without 2x is the same , i suspect this can not be the case , only if they are so cheap that they are only for the moon , rest of it they cant do since they cant do low light at all . My logic is that i need to get some lenses from Japan , on Taiwan ASAP . And then i would be able to see stripes on Jupiter . But i have no experience . Any galaxy , or feature on the sky apart from Jupiter i couldn't see , if you need a link of my telescope i can show you , but i think i have those cheapest eyepieces , and am intrested how much better image and magnification can i get with better ones , and which ones ?

If your scope is an achromat refractor, it could be it!! If its a reflector[sounds like it, 114 mil] you need better eyepieces:)

Depends on what you consider "good" mate:/ From 50$ to a thousand for some:/ For the first year or so, spending 50 to a 100$ an eyepiece is plenty good enough. Two inch ones cost somewhat more, but an easy view makes them great if you can afford, say a variable BAADER 2 inch, 8 to 24 mil would be great, you wont notice small optical problems until you gain experience. 270 to 300 odd$ for one, which gives you HEAPS of different magnifications. Especially with a 2 times mag barlow:)
