Awesome analysis. So many people that have never flown behind a modern avionics suite cannot grasp the monumental difference in capabilities and especially situational awareness this new technology provides. Avidyne equipment is also fantastic, as I recently flew a Cirrus with it and it is equally incredible. Synthetic vision was in the realm of Star Wars to me but I immediately became a fan on my first approach. My Garmin 530/ King panel which I was so proud of in my Tr182 now screams at me to be upgraded. The feature that the Dynon has that I love is the angled button panel that you can rest your hand on. If it is even mildly bumpy manipulating touch screens or button pads is difficult without a place to anchor your hand.

I’m an old school guy. Helicopter pilot by trade. But I love planes with round motors and steam gauges. A little over a year ago I transitioned from firefighting in Hueys to SPIFR in a EC-135 and my god my whole perspective changed. Yea the old planes are still cooler. But if you have to work a machine and especially if you’re IFR glass cockpit and autopilot sure make life easier.

Thanks for the great video! Hey I love Dynon and Garmin, but FYI just about any public company is going to have a lot of shares owned by institutional investors - who might be rich folk or just people representing your 401k, pension, and so forth. In the case of Garmin - it is is nearly one-quarter owned by insiders, which is rare and tremendous. Elon Musk doesn't own as much of Tesla as Garmin's CEO and other insiders own of Garmin... well as a percent at least. :)

GORGEOUS! And also strengthening the reason why the plane I buy should be EAB or E-LSA. Or even a S-LSA re-registered in E-LSA. Then again, that all changes soon when MOSAIC final rule is released. (I know, US stuff.)

I am a new plane owner as well and upgraded the avionics in my Grob 109B Motor glider from a basic radio and transponder to a better radio and ADS-B in and out with an IPad EFB. It's made a huge upgrade in safety for me. While I still fly with the pneumatic gauges having a backup GPS AHRS is helpful. I love this content and glad the upgrade in your plane is behind you. Fly safe and I am looking forward to more complete walkaround videos.

I fly two RV-8s, one with a basic small Dynon D10 and steam gauges, and one with Dynon Skyview HDX, synthetic vision, autopilot, etc. They are both VFR only because I’m in the UK and IFR approval for a homebuilt is super hard to get. I fly a lot of aeros, formation, and mock combat in both, and the one with the steam gauges is easier to fly because the instrumentation is easier to read at a glance. I would choose the one with the Skyview HDX for any IFR flying in a heartbeat though.

I've never heard of Dynon. Now, I don't own a GA aircraft, and I haven't flown one for 20 years or so (I'm an airline pilot), but I'm still a little surprised I've never heard of them. I love the look of them - they look more ... technical, less "pc game".

I know Garmin avionics menus and layouts like the back of my hand so I tend to gravitate towards that but I would like some more time behind a dynon panel. I'd love an RV-8 (really a harmon rocket but we'll see) and would like a G3X or similar. Dynon looks like a great (and multitudes less expensive) option.

As usual, an awesome video. Looking at the Garmin display, it seems clean and less cluttered, while the Dynon looks busy and harder to scan quickly. Would love your detailed take on that observation. The decision tree you presented makes eminent sense, but I’m mainly interested in the user interface and experience while flying, rather than any of the issues you mentioned (save for the horizontal/vertical orientation bit).

If you bought this exact panel it would cost about 20k USD. The price of a panel varies so much depending what you get. Getting a quote is very easy and fast for exactly what you're interested in if you call them up. The price of my exact panel would be fairly different then someone got something similar with just a few differences.
@richmanwisco

@@CompleteWalkaround Also (at least here in the US), the price of your avionics will also depend on whether it's a certified airplane (Part 23) or Experimental. The certified version of a piece of equipment will be upwards of 50% more expensive than the experimental version. (I believe Dynon offers certified components, but not 100% sure). Also, another more recent player on the avionics market and making a big splash, is uAvionix. Their catalog is small, but growing quickly.

Because the EIS on Garmin is vertical, no other real difference.

I upgraded my 1978 steam gauge panel 172 with all Garmin. 10” g3x a 750txi and gfc500 autopilot. The cost of the equipment was 50k. The labor? 60k. All in after it was all said and done I paid about 120k for a full Garmin upgrade. Plus a few other things like led lights etc made it totaling to 130k for the upgrade.

As someone who flies both steam gauge Cessnas and Entegra-equipped Warriors at the same school, the difference, especially when you do instrument flying, is stark. The Entegra is just so much better than steam gauges and it's the oldest GA glass panel. I can imagine the difference between steam and modern glass is cavernous considering how many more features new glass has over Entegras.

I pad stuff has come a long way. No question. Especially when paired with something that gives it pitot static like the lvel Bom. No matter what you do though, iPads a gimic at best. I wouldnt go beyond day vfr with an iPad as a primary source of anything beyond a chart. (Even then 2 iPads are required to be legal as a chart.) So, if you're talking day vfr doesn't really matter what you have. Anything beyond a couple of steam gauges is superfluous.
