3rd in the series of Upgrading your mini lathe, "The Carriage" . I do my best to show anyone interested in completely stabilizing their mini lathe carriage, How I went about doing that. I feel that it is all part of precision machining. It's a lot of work and takes a long time. But, That is all part of the fun. I Hope you enjoy the video. I just ordered a bed extension for my mini lathe as being the easiest way to avoid having to hand lap several thousandths in one firection off the front side of the ways and several more thousandths off the back side in the opposite direction to get them straight. Your finding that the extension kit was fairly straight helped me make that decision. I hope that mine is the same. I'm 71 years old and a former ASE Master auto technician, but other than getting to play with a lathe in a high school shop survey class and use a dedicated lathe for turning automotive starter and generator commutator rings I really haven't used any machine tools (I don't count Neway valve seat tools or cylinder hones) since I bought a mini lathe and mini mill a couple of years ago. Watching your videos has already prevented me from making any number of misteaks in setting up my new lathe bed, and it hasn't even arrived yet. I would say "Keep up the good work", but I am obviously coming late to the game and have a lot of catching up to do on the good work that you've already done. Thanks!

Hello Brad, This is a Hobby and coming late to the game has nothing to do with it. You're 71, I'm 72, has nothing to do with it. You held a certified position. An ASE Master Auto Technician, That has something to do with it. You sound like a smart guy. Catching up? There is no catching up, you're not on the "JOB". This is a Hobby and we are learning to have fun while doing things we like to do. Even if you had to lap material off your bed ways, who cares how long it takes. We're are not on the JOB. I look at it like this. When there is a problem with my hobby machines, I think, Can I fix it? Some times I can and some times, I think you know what I mean. Have fun with your mini machine tools, And like I say until next time Enjoy.

I'm glad my video could help. Those little machines are a lot of fun to mess around with, But they can be a pain in the ass. It takes a lot of time and patience to get them to run the way we thought they were going to run when we bought them. Thank You for subscribing an good luck with you lathe.

Thanks for the video, nice and clean presentation! With the carriage off, I'd suggest adding a cover for the gears in the apron.

Thank you for watching my video and the kind words. I think you're right adding a cover for the gears in the apron is a good idea. I may even do a quick video on that.

@@GlennNowOnKZfaq great, just a simple sheet of plastic or sheet metal and a few tapped holes will do the trick. I went for a plastic sheet (the lid of an old storage box) which was transparent and made aligning the holes easier

Ooh, nice! Good job milling that Carriage flat! I was wondering how close you were going to be able to get it. You definitely chose the roght process.

Hello Joe, It was the only way I could see doing it in my little Hobby Machine Shop. After I retired I sold all my bigger CNC's. It all worked out and had fun doing it. Glad you enjoy my video and Thank you.

Well done Glenn, always scarey when you have to drill precision holes with no mistakes or it will ruin the whole project

Do you benefit more from a 3 inch surface plate than a 2 inch plate. I just purchased a "B" 2X9X12 surface plate. In what way is the 3" plate better if it is . Thank you
@GlennNowOnYouTube
@GlennNowOnYouTube 4 ай бұрын
Do I benefit more? I personally don't. Only because I'm only doing hobby machining. But, I would think the thicker the granite the more stable it would be. But again, if you're not in a clean room that is temperature controlled it really doesn't matter. 1" ,2" or 3" it's all good, you have a flat surface to work off of. I think your 2" will be just fine.

I’m missing context as to why there were no existing holes for the pillar blocks or the speed change bracket.

Hello Mitch, From what I understand these lathe beds are used by a wide variety of companies around the world. The carriages/aprons are designed differently by some of the companies that use this lathe bed. The position of the half nut that runs on the lead screw may be higher or lower in the apron, which in turn puts the lead screw higher or lower, which again puts the pillow blocks in a different location. Let me know if that makes sense or not. Are you thinking about doing a bed extension project?

@@GlennNowOnKZfaq I understand the way you determined and did your drilling. I thought you we’re working with your original lathe bed. I did think until I saw a video of another fellow on YT that you might have been installing a new linger bed kit to give your lathe longer working area between Chuck and tailstock. That is why I was confused about no existing homes for lead screw pillar blocks and gear speed changer
