We installed Ikea Utrusta hinges on our van upper cabinet horizontal doors. They are push-to-open, open on their own and stay up, have adjustable tension, and are our favorite solution for upper cabinet hinges..

I like your doors is that 3/4” wood for the cabinets? I did a test cabinet in 1/2” but not as sturdy and had to use micro Kreg jig and the 3/4” and 1” screws did not work very well. I was worried about weight but durability more important. I am inserting metal on my shaker doors. Great hinges worth the money on time saving and durability

I used 3/4” x 2-1/2” poplar for the rails and stiles, and used 1/4” baltic birch plywood for the panels of the doors.

So you did a dato groove in your trim and put 1/4” birch in the middle so you have grooves on both sides. They look nice would of liked to see you make one

@@OurThrivingLife there was no suitable key in the kit, there need a torx screwdriver or a set, I will be insanely grateful to you if you tell me what torx size numbers are needed there, for adjustment, I am now assembling the kitchen at home

Thanks for the video, I just purchased the exact same pair of hingles and am going to install them tomorrow. Seems much easier than the traditional piston/pneumatic method!

You could have informed your viewers that the metal drill guide is made only for IKEA’s own kitchen cabinets so it will fit perfectly. But maybe you didn’t know at first since you had to make a do-over yourself. When I used them in my kitchen I’d calculated that it would work if I flatten the side guiding because of the thicker plywood used for my kitchen cabinets compared to IKEA’s. AND they also are available with dampers for an nice and quiet closing. Yay.

Thanks for the great demo. How are the fairing on trips? I am worried that these would pop open on the right bump, have you seen that happen? I am assuming you can adjust the strength to hold up different wait of doors, have you messed around with that?

I currently have a tambour door on my appliance garage and want to replace it with a regular door. I think a horizontal door would be great. I have a face frame opening. I saw in your video that you added a block to the sides to adjust for the face frame. If my opening is 14" high, how many inches high should the replacement door be (using these Ikea hinges)? I am a real novice. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the great video! Did you get the cabinets from Ikea as well or did you build them? We are looking at the KNOXHULT wall cabinet and wondering if you can install the Ultrusta hinges on them so the doors opens up. Any thoughts on the quality of the ikea cabinets?

I built my cabinets from scratch. These hinges should work with IKEA Knoxhult cabinets. I’ve heard of a few people who have used IKEA cabinets for van builds and have been happy with them.

Thanks for the videos. The roof panels look great too. What did you use? Oak or pine 3" x 3/4" slats with thinsulate between the van?

I’ll have a video on the ceiling up soon. I used 3/4” x 3-1/2” poplar. I ripped it down to 1/2” thick. The slats are 1/2” wide. I insulated with Havelock wool and then covered it with black material stapled to furring strips.

How did you figure out they sat 3/8” too high? Did you drill two sets of holes? The first being too high?

Found you guys in Alex and Sarah's FB group and have been loving videos! I know that you mentioned that they come with a locking mechanism too so that they don't open. Are these the push to open variety or the normal ones? Do you find that they stay closed well while you drive? Thanks!

Sarah and Alex’s group is awesome. These are not push to open. You rotate a knob, which tightens and loosens a clamp over each of the bikes. That knob locks with a key.

I had the hinges installed and they won't close all the way. They will close only 3/4 the way. Then they knock. What to do??

@@christophercrystal4449 Don't use a power drill to adjust the screws. These hinges offer enough adjustment, considering your door is withing specified weight. If you have a heavy door, look further in the Blum Aventos hinge system. I think there are different versions, depending on the door weight range.

I want the push to open hinges, Utrusta but am concerned they might open on a bumpy road. Have you ever had any issues like that?

I ended up using some stronger magnetic closures that I bought on Amazon for that very reason. I never tried the ones that came with the hinges. They would probably work fine, but I wanted something a little stronger.

Hello wondering if you could help me I have the same hinges and they were quite easy to install like your video but I’m having a problem doing that adjustment if there is one for the soft close my door I did it just so it keeps it up then when I pull it down, it doesn’t go down by itself but it stops about an inch or so before it hits the face of the cabinet. Is there an adjustment since I can’t find any information from the company on this your help would be appreciated

I don't believe there is an adjustment for that. There is only side to side, up and down, tilt, and overall tension. I've never seen one not close. Are you sure that the arms of the hinge are not rubbing on the side of the cabinet? Sounds to me like that might be the problem.

Perfect demonstration, you've done a great job! Can these fit in IKEA cabinets that are only 20cm deep? I can't see any dimensions for the hinge so it's difficult to tell. Appreciate your advice, thanks again! 😀

Not sure of the exact dimensions of the hinges. I think they are probably right around 120cm long, so it would be pretty close.

I went to IKEA recently and in there "As-is" section they had a whole pile of these Utrusta hinges for $10 a pair. I can't find anything wrong with them, I got a few pairs and I don't even know how I'm going to use them yet lol

I actually didn't have to adjust mine, but there is a screw on the underside of each hinge that you can use to tighten or loosen the tension of the hinges.

"Oodtroost-a" - the last "a" as in arbour. It means "equip" or rather, "to equip". It cracks me up when Americans and foreigners in general attempt to pronounce "strange" words :) Don't get me started on the word Porsche. Ahem. Anyways. I am here because I am starting a project that will use these very same hinges, but disappointingly Ikea only quotes a measurement as the maximum size door that it can lift as a pair. The maximum size I believe was 40x80cm, and that must translate to some weight which, I assume, will cover all kitchen cabinet types and variants they have - which most likely do not all weigh the same. But that does not really help as I am planning to lift a door, or rather a panel, that is about 32x177cm and made out of chipboard witch is covered in white melamine. I have not yet found the 100% accurate weight, but using off-cuts I have estimated it to be 7,67KG Anyone reading this with experience with these hinges and how well they perform?

Thanks for the help on pronunciation. We have used these hinges for cabinet doors up to about 30cm X 60cm with very heavy brass handles from Restoration Hardware. These pushed the limits of the hinges with them adjusted to maximum tension. Not sure about the total weight on this application, but my guess is that your door would be too heavy.

@@OurThrivingLife thank you for responding even if did have a hint of snark in there :) I have now been working on my project for the past week and my initial estimate was slightly on the low side and the actual weight was 8kg. I found white test-fitting that if I cranked the spring to the absolute max then it would just barely hold the weight of my door. Luckily I had built my cabinet and door with far too low tolerances so I had to take of more of the long edge than originally planned and after the weight loss the panel is only 7.6KG and give what I wanted to achieve this is now as near as optimal as I can get!

You just press the release on the front of each hinge.

There is a screw on the underside of the hinge. It adjusts the tension, but not the travel.

you don't have to add anything if your cabinet doesn't have those frames around the edges, as is the case in this video. The hinges should be mounted straight on the lateral wall in a normal situation.

There is a screw on the underside of each hinge that adjusts the tension. They are very strong and really shouldn’t need adjustment to stay open, unless you have very heavy doors.

@@debzlala I don't know, but they are quite strong. There is a screw on the underside of each hinge that will tighten or loosen the tension. If this doesn't work, perhaps you have faulty hinges.

There is a screw towards the back of the hinge arm. When you adjust it the little orange marker will will show the tension increasing.

Just finished installing 12 of these today, 20 minuets ago! Your video was very helpful, thanks! I had to make an half inch adjustment in the jig to make it work with my IKEA BESTA cabinets, they work well, we should be happy with this setup!
