Stone Toadstools were made to place close together to form a base for a haystack. The reason was that RATS cannot run up the 'vertical pillar then do a 90degree turn to walk upside down along the base of the toadstool to access and EAT the hay. They were never made a garden ornaments.

Wow, that is a fascinating explanation... that now I'm not sure I'm happy to know, LOL! The toadstools don't sound so appealing anymore. I'll never see them in quite the same way. Kind of like when I toured Disneyland and someone told me about all the rats that live in the ivy groundcover... and come out after the guests leave to feast on all the dropped crumbs of pizza and chips! Yuck...

Those stone mushrooms at the beginning are actually called staddle stones (I think). They used to build grain storage barns on them so that rats couldn't get in and eat the grain.🐀

Oh wow, am i happy i clicked this one. What an amazing place to visit and stay. Beautiful shots and tour. Indeed that ice cream place reminds like Harry Potter and quidditch. Nice and old school when you see a sign that says you can only enter the water on horseback. Great how every time you keep finding something magenta on your travels. If we ever return to the UK we will definitely add the Cotswolds to our itinerary. For now we just enjoy your trip and narrative on these amazing places you have visited. We do want to visit CR! But I’m not sure that will happen while you are still there. We are currently planning a four month trip to the UK and a few countries on the continent for next year 😉. Wishing you happy and safe travels in 2022! 💕

I was very pleased to see this video. I am proud to say that I manage the gardens at the Lords of the Manor hotel. I am glad that you enjoyed the fruits of our labours. The owners and I have lots of plans for further improvements to the already beautiful gardens, including even more magenta flowers! Throughout Spring, Summer and Autumn I do monthly garden tours which includes a cream tea!

What’s the best month to come to see the flowers bloom? We’re usually in the UK in July, but by that time most flowers are past it’s bloom.

Upper and Lower Slaughter are my favourite villages in the Cotswolds. A few years back I discovered them as we did a bike (as in bicycle, and not ebike!) ride around a small section of the Cotswolds. We stayed in Moreton-in-Marsh and rode back there late each afternoon. The biking company gave us maps (the paper ones with gradients so it gave you an idea if you wanted to ride up that hill!) Having bikes we were able to ride to some really small villages, so small they didn't even have pubs or cafes, so my plans for a midmorning tea break, lunch and midafternoon tea break didn't quite work out! At least Lower Slaughter was big enough to provide a lunch spot.

I love that you did that! My husband adores cycling, but I am not good enough to do that type of countryside cycling!😬😬😬 however, we absolutely love discovering tiny little villages and hamlets. I actually prefer it when they don’t have a lot of shops. They are just so quiet and beautiful! But yes, you do need to pack a picnic if you spend all day in those types of places😉

we’re with you on the budget-friendly ways to check out more expensive spots. anytime we can do a light lunch or apps/drinks, that’s the way we go. those gardens were incredible! I always loved lawns with the stripes mowed into them.

Sadly to report but in 2023 the cafe and museum in Lower Slaughter stopped trading. Apparently the building is being converted into a residence. BTW The villages actually get their names from the Norman family name Slaughter. The land around the villages was given to a member of the family by William the Conquerer after the invasion of 1066 as a thank you for assisting him in the invasion. There are several memorial plaques to the Slaughter family in the chancel of Upper Slaughter church.

Thanks so much for setting me straight on the name origin... but I'm sorry to hear that the ice cream is gone! Last time we were there I saw that it was closed... but I didn't know it was permanent!!! That will be tricky, since so many people know that place as a shop... they will probably have people knocking on their door for ages!

So, you've finally reached the Slaughters, and what a fabulous tour! Great photogrpahy and narrative. It reminded me of a cycle ride around these villages: precarious because there were so many visitors to avoid! You manage to avoid them all by turning up on a Wednesday when, apparently, the Cotswolds are still asleep! 😜 Lovely tour of the churches. I vote that we hear Ian narrating future visits to churches, as he appears so knowledgeable about the history. Butter on scone...????? What a travesty! Clotted cream first, then jam (or raspberries and/or sliced strawberries). How can you put clotted cream on second if your scone is loaded with raspberries: they'd be wobbling around without cream on first. A great vlog - thank you!

I do rely on my trusty travel companion for all architectural analysis because I am pretty clueless when it comes to that stuff.😬 Ian has a cousin who lives in Somerset and is married to a man who is a religious scholar and expert on cathedrals! There is a huge, and growing, problem in the UK with tourists in the countryside. It's not just shops that served working communities are being bought up to be cafes and souvenir shops, the worst problem is the amount of houses that would have been lived in by locals are being bought up to be holiday lets or second homes. Some villages are empty in the winter because of the second home owners/holiday lets. The UK is a geographically small area, and cannot afford for a high percentage of properties to be holiday lets.

I have visited the Cotswolds many times, but only this summer when I spent an extended period of time there or did I learn from the locals about issues like the one you are discussing. These historic towns and villages have dramatically changed because of the effects of over tourism and commercialisation.

@@MagentaOtterTravels Have you watched any Sinom Reeve programmes on The Lakes? He goes into this problem in huge depth, but not in an academic way, just as a local who is trying to 'live his life' in a pretty, but 'dead', village because of tourism. Cornwall county Council have put restrictive covenenants on new build homes to prevent anyone but owner occupiers who live and work in Cornwall from buying them - it is getting that bad.

The problem you were having with putting jam first and then cream is resolved if you put enough clotted cream on top. You should have enough that you don't need to spread it. You just dollop it on top.

You are correct. That's why when we visited the Syreford quarry the quarry foreman told us the stone they were cutting is being sent to Texas for a mansion being built in Dallas. The stone is in high demand worldwide (for those that can afford it).

We were there and visited the craft shop! Another favorite place.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️. We walked about the garden at the Manor House Hotel and found it lovely. Our tour guide told us Slaughter means ‘boggy place where pigs wallow’. We got a laugh out of that.😂

@@MagentaOtterTravels I must say, after we left the Slaughters, we passed by a pig farm. It was out in the country, of course, but consisted of a large field dotted with little Quonset huts and troughs. Free range pigs! We got a chuckle out of seeing the pigs just after our Slaughter visit. ❤️

I took Christine to the Cotswolds for relaxing Christmas many years ago 1987 The Hotel (Wyck Hill House ) we stayed in had a small library and she read a book by Rebecca Tope called Slaughter in the Cotswolds. She loved it as it is obviously set in the Cotswolds. She has since read all of Topes books. Ps it was a really super laid back Christmas the food and atmosphere was brilliant

I have begun working on getting Ian to agree to spend Christmas in England one year. It’s going to be a tough sell, but I am going to do my best! Would love to see Christmas in the Cotswolds. A friend just posted photos and video of their visit to see Sudeley castle with all of the Christmas decorations. It was amazing!

Hi dara lovely video ,once again .Bringing back memories of summer .Do you bring the good weather with you .Only last summer if i remember correctly was nothing to write home about?

I thought last summer was pretty good! I escaped the 40 C heat of Texas, and whilst there were some rainy days, we had lots of sunny days with blue skies. And when we did, we ran around and filmed and filmed and filmed!!! The same day we went to both of the Slaughters we also did Bourton (at 7am) and other places! We were TIRED at the end of those days when we got back home, LOL!

Yes, the name is quite unfriendly sounding, isn’t it?! The water in those rivers really is clear and beautiful! Adds to the serene quality of the villages. Especially when you are there without the crowds! The scones were way better than I have made! 😉💕

I have watched tons of Cotswolds vids as it’s my favourite place here too. I’d say your Cotswolds channel will blow up. I think the drone footage makes you guys more unique. I think Rick Steve’s done a good job. But didn’t get the drone footage you guys have. Nor did he go off track so to speak with less tourist Cotswolds locations like you guys have. Very much enjoying these clips and I’m in England

What a coincidence. I woke up thinking of the word Glaswegian today for some reason. Probably because I saw an old top gear, wait it might’ve been grand tour video clip this week where Jeremy Clarkson asked if there were any Glaswegians in the audience. I would put ice CREAM in a dish and than put STRAWBERRY sauce on top. Because the ice cream is dense and hard. Like that clotted cream! ..... the debate rages on...

It is a low, boggy river. I'm sure in the rainy season it swells a bit, and there certainly have been floods! There was a water marker next to the low pedestrian bridge.

This "weed" might either be a cotton thistle( Scotch or Scottish thistle) or a spear thistle (bull thistle, common thistle).

Your correct that Slaughter derives from the Old English slough meaning 'wetlands' or 'boggy place' but Slough in Berkshire doesn't. It's first recorded name was 'Slo' in the 12th century.

and what did "Slo" mean? Everyone there moved about very slowly? "Slow Living in Slough" needs to be their new tourism tagline. Just like in Oklahoma (whose abbreviation is OK)... their tagline is "Oklahoma is OK". Lousy tagline, IMHO! hahaha

Have you heard of the bog snorkelling competition in Llanwrtwd Wells? You should look it up but l don’t think you should have a go! Talking of bell ringing, my sister and her husband tolled the bell in their local church 99 times when Prince Philip died, one for every year of his life.

Thanks for you comment Liz! Did you know you can click the dots and edit your comment if you make a spelling error? I use that feature on an almost daily basis because I am CONSTANTLY making mistakes, LOL! I like snorkelling, but would prefer shallow clear blue warm water in Mexico full of sea turtles and coral. NOT a cold bog in Britain I'm afraid! haha I love that your sister and her hubby know how to ring church bells and did it on that sombre occasion! I learnt how hard it is! Spoiler alert: I'm a rubbish church bell ringer. But I still enjoyed the opportunity immensely!!! Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers XX Dara

@@zaftra oh, thanks! I think the 12.50 was for a cream tea. Probably a pot of tea with two scones and cream and jam. Definitely pricey, but I think you are paying for the stunning setting and the service. Looking around the Manor, and exploring the gardens in the front and back of it kind of felt like visiting a national trust property. I figured it was worth the price of the cream tea 😉
