I've been able to work for UPS in two different job positions. First as a UPS Driver Helper. Second as a UPS Package Handler. I wanted to share 5 things for you to consider about working for UPS. Enjoy!
These are the gloves I used, Home Depot also carries them!

Should you work at UPS? I'll share my perspective and you can decide for yourself. Here are 5 things about working at ups:
1 The work is hard. Peak season was about 8-9 hours of non stop, hard work. Literally moving boxes nonstop. I did get sore, really sore, but that's part of the job.
2 The benefits are good. UPS take's care of its employees. They aren't perfect, no job is, but the union is strong, the retirement and pension plan, the health and vacation! Stay for the long haul and it will pay off.
3 The camaraderie is strong. I had the best supervisors and coworkers. It made my job better for sure. There will always be a few employees who keep to themselves, but most of our people got along and worked well together.
4 Lots of opportunities to grow and move up. Not only can you request for different roles. You can move up to be a sup or a driver, or a multitude of other roles. It can be your career if you want it to be. Lots of good people at UPS make it their career.
5 As a part time job, pay is super basic. Most people can't live off a couple hundred bucks a week, so you may need a second job. Personally, I would go UPS early in the AM. Then go to my full time job during the day.

As a part-time supervisor to package handlers at UPS, it is very important to me to get to know my loaders. What do they do on their spare time, where do they see themselves in 1-5 years, what are their goals in the future. When you get to know your employees, not only can you see how well they work, but you can create relationships with them that can ultimately better your life as well as theirs, and then they will want to work for you and do better for UPS. A supervisor can make or break an employee, defining the morale and expectations of their employees while executing the goals and aspirations of the company.

@@almightywalk that’s a good thing man. You’re reliable and good at your job. That is something I really like in my employees. If you want to stick with UPS, you have a good chance to move up in the company and become supervisor. Showing initiative and being good at your job is how your boss can vouch for you. It sucks, but it’s very good, please keep it up

@@Elbanjomon I understand , but at the end of the day we are all human and at some point we break. I almost fainted & had to leave early last week while throwing a truck. And all my supervisor could say was “you good?” “are you coming back?” He has me throwing 3-4 trucks DAILY with another guy and if he’s not there I’m on my own. He expects us to deliver everyday since we’ve got there. They even told us whenever they hire new people we come out of the trailers but they’ve hired 3 more people since and we’re still in the same spot and they’re preloading. It’s not fair, at least rotate us. My supervisor even said one of the new guys looks like he’s 10 yrs old so he hasn’t been called in much just because of that.

I remember watching your other video… helper in Hawaii and I started out the same way, helper during peak then after I was offered a job after and preload was open so I did that. I learned how the company operated like the roles of supervisors, seniority, pay after a couple of months there. It was supposed to be one year to put on my resume but then I kept going. I was going to school at the time and said I’ll wait before driving, was offered PVD work during pandemic then an opportunity to go driving came so I studied, went to class and here I am still working at Ups as a driver almost at 5 years with the company. That hub looks like my hub in Cerritos, CA haha but they don’t scan the packages when they load.

I’ve been at UPS for just over 2 years now. I started as a “package handler” early morning preload and just recently got a promotion to “customer counter clerk” working in the front office. My ultimate goal is to become a driver. The insurance benefits are amazing! My wife and I have medical, dental, and vision insurance through Blue Cross and Blue Shield that is 100% payed by the company. I get all holidays off with pay and 1 week of vacation and 1 week of option days. I do doordash when I’m off from UPS for about 2 hours and then 1 full day on the weekends. We pay all of our bills and are able to put some into savings and stocks also. I definitely recommend UPS especially to the younger guys and women wanting to start a career!

I've been working for UPS for a couple of weeks now and I've noticed that most people that are busting their asses is because they deinitely suffer from anxiety. I have not had a single supervisor tell me that I'm too slow. I take my time to see the label and put it in the right belt (Sorting), if I'm unloading a truck I make sure I set the package so the laser can scan it and the sorters can see the label before the box gets to them to make their job easier. Meanwhile, there are other workers that are throwing packages as if they're running a sprint. Unnecesary burning of energy and ledas to mistakes and broken packages while there's no one rushing to be quick. Sometimes they pull packages from the middle to have all packages on top fall, I just stay back knowing some of those packages can crack your head or break your neck. I take my time and unload from the top and continue down to the middle and them move to the other side and unload completely like the instructions on the video say. NO ONE IS RUSHING YOU, STOP BURNING UNNECESSARY ENERGY, RUSHING LEADS TO INURIES AND MISTAKES, TAKE YOUR TIME AND DO A GOOD JOB SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO THE SAME JOB TWICE.

Well I agree most of what you said. Physical labor, sore and bleeding, worst out... I’m a preloader and I am at the heavy pulls area that always got irregs , and lots of bulk stop. I am small guy but terrible lol 😆 even though I’m short I am trying to keep my pace to not get stockpile with packages 📦 bcoz it will be overwhelming. So mostly everyday the total of my packages are nearly thousands but in peak season got 1500s packages and it’s chaotic...but so far I enjoying it I knew my neighbors and friends with them so it’s kinda routine during the work, talk a bit with them. I took the offer, was told to remember work load methods and 2 weeks later, when I was about to sign in, my supervisor told me not to sign in. Ofc I was confused, but then he told me it’s because I made part time supervisor 😂. I have a really good friend that gave me the heads up that they were looking for people and he put in a good word for me as well. He’s been there for several years and has become a driver now. Starting out they hired me at $22 an hour. I love the hours because regardless of how early I have to wake up, I know I’m going to get overtime hours per day and anything over 5 hours a day is overtime which is roughly $30 an hour. I’ve been a contractor, a mover, and have done concrete work for most of my adult life. The start out pay is better than any place I have ever applied to and the benefits and union opportunities are astrological.

I currently work for UPS. Somedays, I can barely walk to my car, because my legs and back are so sore. A lot of people are not really that friendly. They act like robotic drones waiting for their slave sentence to (shift) end. A few are very friendly. The HUB reminds me of the scenery, and mentality from the new Mad Max movie. Mindless, repetitious scanning, and packaging. Your life becomes, an endless progression of beeps, loud voices, and rollers guiding boxes to the back of a giant dark(pit)trailer. A world of stained metallic metal, conveyor belts, and guttural dialog. As long as you have a clean background and pulse...your welcomed to be a package handler. The marketed world of UPS would have you think everything is crimson & clover, until you enter the hub. Yeah, I felt like quitting a few times too. If UPS is your 1st job ever, then I recommend you work your way up to being a driver feeder as you get older. This sh*t is to hard for scrub wages. 180 to 250 a week/part time.

That’s an accurate description! If I didn’t listen to podcasts and uplifting music it would have been a lot harder. (In other words you aren’t stubborn or too prideful to learn new things) one thing that helps me when I’m anxious during interviews is to write down the important things I want to say, and when they ask me, I can look at my notes and read my answer. I’m not sure if all Hubs are same, but at mine we had an option to work Monday’s, especially during peak season. (Reg sched tues - sat) which was good for more hours. @MicahSimpson
@MicahSimpson 2 жыл бұрын
Hello! So if you load trucks, advice that helped me was 1 check in consistently with your driver and ask how to better load their truck. 2 my sup told me touch a box the least amount as possible, ideally you touch a box once, it gets scanned and loaded into the truck. 3 arrive a few min early, to get your scanner working, truck checked, and area cleaned up, because starting off behind in any way means boxes will pile up on you. Moving up to driver depends on the HUB, but could be as fast as 2 years, Or as long as 12! Hope that helps, go crush it! 👊🏼

@@stacymcdaniel9627 they sure do! Well most of the time. It all Depends on the specific job, but being a package handler you’ll move hundreds of boxes each shift. My job was loading trucks. So id have 4-5 trucks, and each truck would have about 300-500 packages on it. All the packages come into one area, and you have to sort them, scan them and put on the correct truck. So yeah there’s def a lot of packages every day! And basically if you can’t finish, or there’s an overload of packages (which happens) they will send someone to help you. And honestly at the end of the day, there’s other people around who help and jump in, so it’s crazy but manageable. Make sense?

I’m applying for a UPS package and Im kinda of a skinny dude so if something is a bit too heavy for me to lift could I ask for help lifting it? Also the hours I see on the application it’s from 11pm to 3am are those realistic hours? Because I see comments saying they have like 4:30 - 9:00 etc and once I’m done applying how long does it take for them to let you know something? And do I need a college degree or high school diploma to get the job as a package handler? And last question how much do they make an hour I also heard they get paid weekly is that true?

Hey buddy, yeah being skinny ain’t an issue, you’ll be able to do the job, there’s someone always nearby if you need help. There’s two shifts, twilight 4-9pm and sunrise 4am -9am, and when you apply it usually takes about a week or so, but it depends if there’s an open role to fill. What kind of staging is that? At my hub the boxes come from the conveyor and we may have to walk a little bit just to find the box and add it to the truck. But that shelf looks stationary right? Do other workers stack the boxes on the shelf or is it different?
@MicahSimpson
@MicahSimpson Жыл бұрын
Yeah so I was in a large facility! So basically, there were like 5 or 6 different slide areas just on my row, where a sorter would put them on the correct conveyor, and then the boxes would slide down to each of us. But yes my shelf was stationary, the packages slide down from the belt above. Then I load the truck from my shelf. I usually packed 3-5 trucks. so the sorter would see my truck numbers, and all those packages went on my slide. There was also an oversized belt than ran right underneath us. and if we got any missorts, we just toss them on the conveyor below, and it would go back around for the sorter to try again. hope that makes sense! 👊

No, probably not. Most, if not all part-time package handler jobs are 5 days a week and that’s usually Monday-Friday or sometimes Tuesday-Saturday or Sunday-Thursday for some shifts. There are different options for times of shifts for package handlers tho. Every building should have a preload and local sort. Preload at my centre is about 4am-9am, and it varies by the centre and the package volume coming in. Local sort is in the evening and its at about 5pm-9pm for my centre, once again, it varies. Large centres and hubs will have more shifts throughout the day, some are overnight, so like 11pm-2:30am or something like that and some even have day sorts. The work is really hard. I was told that a coworker eben had a mental breakdown a few years ago. Another one was just quitting right during his shift. I work at a really hard position as a loader right now. And i can tell that my shoulder and my back hurt. Getting up early in the morning is sometimes Vers hard. What i found out that in my case it depends in what i eat the day before. When i eat especially in the evening fruits and vegetables it makes it easier in the morning after. I have some supervisors who really like me. Its like nearly everyone recognizes when you work good and hard and when they can count in you. Its even like you can really get good friends there. So you are definitely right on with the camaradery. And even when you get some Problems with other supervisors or driver or whatever, the ones you are good with really really got your back. So you even get respect by all of them sooner or later. After all it the work at UPS really got me more confident in life because getting up really that early in the morning and after that working really really hard for a couple of hours isnt everyones thing i guess. It definitely sharpened my personality. And the payment of course is quite decent. If you had issues in your life and you see no alternative whatsoever, it can really get you back on track and start a new beginning in life. Therefore im actually quite happy with it. :) I will sub to your channel mate. All the best Dani Ali.

Phil! thats great! I would recommend, 1 water bottle, and coffee if your a coffee guy 2 lunch, I always brought my own food and snacks, they have a break room but home food is always better. 3 long sleeves, my favorite setup was sweats and a long sleeve shirt, it saved my arms from rubbing on boxes all day. 4 gloves, bro some simple gloves will save your hands, especially with the little scanner you have to use, oh man and you'll touch like 1,000 boxes a day, so gloves are the deal... 5 if your loading the trucks, memorize the shelves as quick as you can! go kill it bro!

From my experience, package handler is an entry level job, and lots of people quit. the pay is low and the work is hard. So yeah they are always looking for new hires. Especially on the twilight shift, will they ask us if we want to stay for an hour or is it mandatory to stay for that extra hour? Is worth it?
