I have watched countless videos on paddleshifters and this by far the best video that I have found that explains it. All the other videos assume that you already know when to upshift/downshift. I never learned how to drive a manual, but I recently bought a Automatic car that has paddleshifters that I really want to try to use. Thanks for the help!!

Great video man! Just a question… can u mess up the transmission if u miss a gear or go to low on the RPM?
@davidjames3628
@davidjames3628 2 жыл бұрын
This has probably already be understood but just in case from my own driving experience the answer is no. Manual in automatic cars which is what I’ll assume you’re driving are essentially “computer operated, driver input” transmissions so the car can’t directly shift from 4th to 2nd, something that can damage the transmission if you cause the car to go into redline for example, as automatic gears cycle through whilst shifting down so you never really just jump like you can through manual transmission. This also means the car can’t directly shift from 3rd to 6th. This in mind, you can shift up and put your car in higher gears whilst driving (something the car does to lower RPM and put less strain on the engine when it left in automatic) and nothing will happen. The car “cycles” through the gears and can’t jump up gears like a manual transmission can so the computer safely goes through the gears whilst up shifting and downshifting.

The reason I ask is i want to cause less damage possible to engine.

@thekingofmuscle7021
@thekingofmuscle7021 5 жыл бұрын
It should be fine, u don't even need to give it gas. If u do not downshift and just slow down to a complete stop u will notice that the car downshifted for u all the way to the 1st gear so u don't have to give it any gas when downshifting since the car didn't when it downshifted itself, just keep downshifting at appropriet rpms until a complete stop. And remember the later you downshift the less ur car is in the higher rpms which means the easier it is for ur car. It is totally fine to downshift in high rpms as long as you don't go into a red zone (crossing red line) but that extra tiny bit of stress on the engine is not needed when you are going a complete stop anyways (:

@thekingofmuscle7021
@thekingofmuscle7021 4 жыл бұрын
I'm super glad they are helping you so much (: you don't use the break paddle at all. If u are in automatic mode then usually to get a car to downshift u have to press gas harder for it to realise "Hey he wants more power there is a limit of amount of power I can give him at these low rpms so I gatta downshift to try to give him more power that he is asking for" but when you are in a manual mode then you just downshift where ever you need to by either pulling the gear shifter towards the negative sign or by the paddle on a steering wheel marked "-" if your car is equipped with those (: make sure to not go into a red zone, ie above the red line on the rpms when downshifting (:

@thekingofmuscle7021
@thekingofmuscle7021 3 жыл бұрын
When I downshift I am either off the gas pedal completely ie I am trying to come to a complete stop at a red light (engine breaking) or I keep my foot consistent and steady and applying a good amount of throttle when I am trying to downshift to get going faster. (ie u driving uphill, u applying consistent throttle, u feel like ur car is starting to slow down or having a hard time going up, you don't do anything with the foot, ie keep it consistent and steady, down shift with paddles or shifter (if save to do so based on ur rpms ie if they are not too high already). Then he rpms would jump up, ie u have downshifted and you will feel a bit of boost in power of ur car then you can change the throttle input if you need to 🙂 so basically don't change up throttle input at the same time as changing gears cus it's a computer (an old one tbh, ur smartphone is probably faster lol) and it might get confused. 🙂

@@thekingofmuscle7021 thanks I usually downshifted at red lights coming to a stop just to make some vroom vroom noise lol. I am wanting to use my downshift and upshift since I was just made aware of what the heck those ‘+’ and ‘-‘ signs in my car mean. 😒 After five years of having the car. So, I’ve rewatched and rewatched and have a few questions. When I downshift to accelerate after being at a complete stop, do i then upshift as I get to 5/6 rpms? Also, what about when I am just cruising? There are times when I let my foot off the gas and just cruise, so Do I leave gear where it is at that point? It seems when I’m in manual mode my rpms are around 4/5, which seems high. I don’t know if that made sense.
@thekingofmuscle7021
@thekingofmuscle7021 4 жыл бұрын
No worries, so when you come to a complete stop your car will downshift all the way to first gear even if u didn't. As you start accelerating your rpms start climbing; 1,000... 2,000... 3,000... Etc you can upshift at almost anypoint in time. Usually when you drive not too aggressive you will upshift maybe around 50% up to the red line (let's say redline in your car starts at 6,000 rpms then you would upshift at 3,000). Now if you want to accelerate the fastest way possible you will upshift at the highest rpms possible. Let's say right before redline or right at it. That would give your car the most power to accelerate fastest it can. Since in 99.9% of cars the horsepower and torque you get from the engine is higher at redline than when rpms are below it. When you are cruising you are not accelerating at all so you can leave the car the way it is and not change the gears at all. But because of the vaccum that moving pistons inside the engine create the higher your rpms when you are cruising the faster your car will start to slow down. You can try that urself when you are driving down the road cruise at 2,000 rpm vs 4,500 rpms. You will hear and see that the car starts slowing down faster at 4,500 rpms. This is basically called engine breaking. Many people use that to go down hills to not burn out the breaks, or to slow down the car without breaks when breaks failed or you just want to save them and not replace them as often. You are basically breaking with vaccum inside engine which is totally fine for the engine but is noisier for outside since you are in higher rpms. That's why many times in residential areas you can see signs "No engine breaking". And when you done cruising you will want to either accelerate or break. If you want to break you can just use break paddle and either downshift as the car rpms are getting lower and lower or just come to a complete stop and it will downshift all the way for you. OR if you want to accelerate when you done cruising you will press gas paddle and based on your rpms at that given moment (ie the gear you are in) the car will accelerate accordingly. If your rpms got pretty low while cruising the car will accelerate much slower. So you might have to downshift to get rpms back up and accelerate faster. Also it is better to cruise at lower rpms since the engine isn't working as hard and that could help you save more fuel. It's more like imagine trying to run super fast but actually not running fast; you are swinging you arms fast and moving legs super fast but barely moving forward, ie almost running on one spot. You will get tired much faster. That's same as rpms when rpms are high and they don't need to be that high you can just cruise at a lower rpms if you don't need to accelerate super super fast you will just burn up more gas for no reason.
@Raadryan

@thekingofmuscle7021
@thekingofmuscle7021 3 жыл бұрын
Yes the rpms are liturarly how fast the parts of your engine are spinning, so the faster you are going in a specific gear the faster your rpms are increasing, until you run out of engine speed (ie the rpms are maxed out, ie nearing red line) and it's time to upshift to get into a higher gear which will drop your rpms a bit and again your rpms start climbing and will be climbing as quickly as you are applying the throttle 🙂 Full throttle = fastest rpm increase

Yes when downshifting, but when you are upshifting it is better to apply consistent amount of gas. Since car's logic is he is not accelerating why the hell he is trying to upshift?

@thekingofmuscle7021
@thekingofmuscle7021 3 жыл бұрын
You do not need to rev match at all in a automatic, since the car does it for you. In fact you might confuse the computer in the car if you will try to rev match, it is not used to that and is not expecting that so keep the foot steady when changing gears.

is it damaging the car if you only upshift on the high way and let it shift itself instead of downshifting
@thekingofmuscle7021
@thekingofmuscle7021 4 жыл бұрын
It is not damaging to let the car downshift by itself at all when you are slowing down. Since the rpms would be really low for it to do so and that is totally normal. That is usually when you should be downshifting if u want to save on gas and etc. The higher rpms the more stress on the engine there is. Just like a human the faster u running the faster u get tired. So when the car is in low rpms it is totally fine (:

I am not sure but if it isn't a manual it should. Try coming to a complete stop from like a third of a second gear and then you can see on your dash if it did shifted to a first gear or not. That is how you will be able to tell (: nothing bad would happen if you do not downshift and u are at a complete stop in a 3rd gear for example. So this is totally safe to do. Just before accelerating back up downshift to first gear just so you aren't making the engine work too hard trying to push the car forward in a high gear (:

@thekingofmuscle7021

You just need to keep your gas input constant when changing gears so if you are downshifting and you have your foot on the gas then keep it there, if you let go of the gas and want to downshift then let it down shift and then put foot on gas if needed etc 🙂 hope this helps!

Hey 🙂 check this video I made out - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rdOVqJWWv8nYnWQ.html It will explain that basically there is no correct rpms to upshift and downshift at, there are wrong rpms to upshift and downshift at. Depanding on the situation and how you want to accelerate the rpms for upshifting and downshift will be different so there is no perfect rpm to upshift or downshift at. 🙂

Why is is better to downshift when overtaking and not slam the gas to 6k rpm and then upshift? Is the 2nd method only used when accelerating from a stop? Thanks.
@thekingofmuscle7021
@thekingofmuscle7021 3 жыл бұрын
Well let's say you are cruising normally on a highway at 100kph, 2,000rpms and in a 6th gear. So your engine is not working too hard you don't what to be cruising at high rpms so when you got up to 100kpm u upshifted until ur rpms very low. That also saves fuel since engine isn't rotating as fast / isn't working as hard. And you cruising relaxingly. Now you want to overtake someone. If you slam the gas paddle when ur rpms are low ur car will start slowly to accelerate. Think of it as the higher rpms are the more alert and quick to respond ur car is. The lower they are the slower and lazier to respond ur car is. So you slam the gas and the rpms are slowing strating to climb, ur car is "waking up from the lazy walk" lol it's also what is called "Engine Lagging" ie slamming the gas paddle and trying to make engine work as hard as it can at lower rpms. So now look at this scenario: you want to overtake a car. You downshift one or two gears now you are in gear 4 and rpms are high at like 5,000 but still same speed at 100kph. Think of it as a slam on the face when ur friend is being sleepy lol now he is more alert and is ready to get up and run xD so you downshift to 4th for example and now you press the gas paddle your car will accelerate much faster and will overtake the car quicker and now you can move in his lane for example and upshift back to where you were lol as if u woke ur friend up with a slap said "Run Police" he ran for a block and then slowed down and went back to his normal walking speed lol that's it is. And if you need to upshift while overtaking someone that is fine as well you can ring it out all the way to the red line if needed and then get back to cruising speed and cruising rpms to save fuel and not make ur engine work super hard 🙂 does this help?)

@thekingofmuscle7021
@thekingofmuscle7021 3 жыл бұрын
Smash the gas paddle and let the revs go all the way up to red line before upshifting. That's how you usually would achieve the fastest acceleration. Be careful, try not to go into the red zone (ie past the red line). That's pretty much it 🙂

@thekingofmuscle7021
@thekingofmuscle7021 3 жыл бұрын
Start at the first gear it will give you the most power to start with and depanding on how powerful your car is and how slippery ur tires and road are modulate your starting point (ie if you are at dead stop and slam the gas as hard as possible and it just spins rear tires and you do a burn out then try to roll on to the gas paddle instead of smashing it) you are basically looking for the best sweet spot. If your car is waaay too powerful (like a hellcat for example) then the best way to lunch it even on a nice road could be from the second gear. But for most cars it would be first gear.

Basically yes it is better to do so since the car's logic is "he is accelerating why would he downshift" when you take ur foot off and downshift and then apply gas then it makes more sense to the car's computer.

So I’m suppose to keep the gas in at a consistent pressure when down shifting?
@thekingofmuscle7021
@thekingofmuscle7021 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, basically try not to change the gas input while the car is upshifting or downshifting, BUT with downshifting You do not have to keep the gas in at all if you do not want to. In fact most of the downshifting that ur car does by itself is when you let go off the gas peddal and are slowly breaking going towards the red light (ie stopping) if u were in gear 5 and started to break to a complete stop, the car throughout this process will switch all the way to gear one automatically by the time u come to a complete stop (or right after you come to a complete stop)

@thekingofmuscle7021
@thekingofmuscle7021 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah you don't need to do anything the car will downshift for you when it gets to low rpms. You can however downshift before it does to a) slowdown quicker, b) if you feel like you will need to accelerate quickly before coming to a complete stop. Just try to keep your accelerator input steady throughout the shifting if you are doing it manually. IE if u are pressing the gas paddle while downshifting don't change the amount u are applying as you are downshifting, if you aren't pressing gas at all then don't suddenly try to give it gas in exact moment as you are downshifting, etc keep the gas input steady while downshifting no matter what that input is. 🙂
