This won't solve the issue folks...been doing HVAC 15 years and I have my own company now...great idea but no solution...You need a Zone board and dampers for this to work...otherwise you're just adding another thermostat

I'm not an HVAC guy and I know this won't work because I have this problem in my home and it's obvious I need some sort of separate venting otherwise you'll just be running the air conditioner until the upstairs cools down.

Agreed, mainly the upstairs one would be overriding the downstairs one in the summer and the main floor overriding the upstairs in the winter. Basically causing the system to operate longer until the two zones are at the requested temp.

Thats all i want. I want the downstairs thermostat to stop reading the downstairs temp at night and just go off the one upstairs where its hot as balls. My downstairs is drafty and my heat runs all night and bakes the upstairs. I want it to read the upstairs temp and not worry about how cold the downstairs is.

What if you would put a switch between each thermostat and the spliced wire so you could turn one of the thermostats off and only have one control the furnace, of course we'd still be freezing the downstairs at night, I get that.

Thanks good video an explanation of what I was looking for.. furthermore people are thinking that it will make your system run harder but it's already running hard either way but you can easily stop the fighting forces between the two thermostats by getting a Wi-Fi digital thermostat and utilizing the scheduling program to stop the two fighting forces.. you can easily set your temp to a schedule that works for you on how much and what time and make any adjustments even when away from home

If I try to get my upstairs even below 77 degrees, my downstairs would be 10 degrees colder. Not sure how 2 thermostats controlling the same ac unit with the same vents wouldn't freeze out the first floor trying to cool off the upstairs. Maybe I'm missing something

This is what I’m talking about This is will make the AC working constantly and also it’s going to be different between upstairs and downstairs temperature

You're right. You'll actually need two units

Yes. But this is a cheap way to try to get it to work. Either try this or shell out for another unit. Lol.

I was thinking the same thing. I deal with this exact issue and adding a 2nd thermostat upstairs would just call for more cool air for all the vents up and downstairs. We only have an issue in the winter, super hot upstairs but cool downstairs. So we just always have the fireplace on.

@@primary3093 was thinking two air handlers operating off of one condenser that way you only heatandcool the upper and lower independently

I have an older 2-story brick house built in the early 90's with a heat pump in Ky where it can get extremely hot and humid. As soon as the temps get around 80 - 85 F the upstairs gets so unbearable. I turn off all the vents in the basement and on the 1st floor, make sure they are open on the 2nd floor, and put the damper to summer but it does very little if anything at all to help. The basement as expected even with vents turned off freezes, 1st floor stays comfortable and the 2nd story feels like someone set the thermostat on HELL! Honestly, the system has never been able to cool our 2nd floor. I have went as far as putting one way mirror tint on the windows in the 2-story foyer and that made very little difference. So I do not think the 2nd thermostat would do me any good because I feel like my system runs constantly already just to keep the lower 2 levels comfortable, I can't imagine the extra stress the system would experience if it were to never stop running trying to cool upstairs. Anyways, after looking into this I think it may be time to look into a mini split system with multiple air handlers for my upstairs. I just don't see any other solutions.

I think you can very easily control the fighting forces using the scheduling times in the digital ones and using the phone app to further adjust them

my problem is since these units were installed upstairs, the down stairs is too warm, why?

This is a pretty good and cheap solution. For all of the complainers, go and shut vents on the floor you do not want to heat/cool.

Sooooo... are there no thermostat systems where you can add other thermometers around the house and they bluetooth or wifi into the thermostat to give it an AVERAGE of the entire house??

I wouldn't say run way too much. I would say downstairs would be freezing in the summer. Unless he is closing his vents downstairs which might damage his unit over time.
@hvacengineerlife8384

@@BTAURES You'd be right that theoretically downstairs could be freezing, and sometimes it is. Thankfully my kids can't close a door to save their life which keeps the downstairs nice and warm. :) But seriously, the goal is just to be sure that the space that needs cooling/heating gets a vote too. If you try this and downstairs is way too cold, the better fit might be installing a control damper close to the unit that you could close down the downstairs flow and force more upstairs. My unit is undersized on capacity (1200sqft/ton - Energy Star construction), ducts are very large for low restriction so diverting extra flow upstairs would not be an issue for me. You should always analyze airflow/capacity/duct work before closing much off or diverting flow.

So if I have a 2 story house with 2 old AC units outside that died. (I’m in the deep south with horrendously hot and humid summers). Everyone says get 2 units ( meaning outside units-condenser?). But I can get a free 4 ton 1 one year old rheem from a house I’m leveling. Are you saying I can use that unit and just put 2 thermostats inside? And I was told the old. inside unit couldn’t be used with the new type Freon etc. I’d be willing to change out the inside if I could use that new rheem. What’s your opinion PLEASE! Thanks so much.

I thought about doing this with those smart thermostat WiFi sensors since my upstairs is always "cooking" in the summer even with central air (one zone problems). Ultimately, I think I'm going to re-zone the house as the sensors will just cause the system to run continuously to satisfy the temperature and most likely never reach desired temp.
@JavierGonzalez-ot3uy

No not unless you use a digital Wi-Fi thermostat you can easily use the scheduling temp and times feature to set it specifically to when and how much at any given time automatically and make adjustments through your phone even when your away from home

No, we are not looking to get 2 Temps, we are looking to tell the system to read upstairs or downstairs depending what time it is. So at night the furnace will try to keep the temp we want upstairs and not worry about downstairs.

Soooo, the hvac guys fix is to turn the thermostat down. Honestly I hope you don’t get paid for your hack services. The actual better cheap but probably still wrong option would be to add a window, portable, mini split system upstairs. That way you cool upstairs but don’t waste electricity freezing out the downstairs. Oh, and you’re just running thermostats in parallel, it’s nothing magical or special.

Seriously? If you are a HVAC guy you need to go back to school, you need a damper board/unit or one is going to being freezing/hot, or vice versa. What a waste of time you spent doing this ridiculous "solution" which will probably short out the system and then cost thousands, Don't do it people.
