In October 2010, Union Pacific's 4-6-6-4 "Challenger" type steam locomotive #3985 made its last excursion tour before being taken out of service. Little did we know at the time, but the UP had Big Boy 4014 up their sleeve. The trip was called the "Missouri River Eagle", named after the famous Missouri Pacific passenger train that once traversed part of the route. Built in 1943, the 67 year old (at the time) engine and train visited Sedalia, MO to help celebrate the community's Sesquicentennial October 10th.
Included in this video are scenes of the steam special (and nearby freight traffic) traveling from Marysville, KS to Kansas City, MO via the UP Kansas Sub. on October 2nd. Following that is cab ride footage from Kansas City to Jefferson City over the River Sub. on the 4th, heading to Sedalia over the Sedalia Sub. on the 9th, and a brief look at the engine back in KC on the 10th.
I hope you enjoy this look back. Thank you to Steve Lee and Ed Dickens for the opportunity to ride with you back then. I apologize for the almost ancient equipment being used at the time. Digital video recording devices have sure come a long way in the last decade.

Now I understand a little more on 3985s system and why it was failing, she wasn’t patched up right nor was she worked on. looking at those moments on her body. From the bubbling coming from the bolts the steam leaking from the pipes she was in bad shape but she went far and I’m proud of that she’s an engine that never gave up and now she’s getting another chance when she goes to Silvis with 5511. Once she’s completed in another decade or hopefully doesn’t take that long she will return and roar along the line once again. Long live steam, Long live the Giants And the survivors of the steam era

Keep something in mind, for those saying 3985 will never run again, at the moment that might be true..but just for the moment..did you ever in your wildest dream think a big boy would be restored? If they can restore a big boy restoring 3985 to operation isn't a pipe dream, keep in mind things change overtime..the budget or man power may not exist at the moment to run 2 large engine's but being that UP is capable of restoring such a large engine also tells me having 2 large engines is not as far fetched as I t may sound..with all that's happening in the world right now with the virus it seems having 2 locomotives running ,even 1 is alot of work..but at some point I think UP is going to pull a rabbit out of a hat..and I do believe you'll see 3985 run beside her big brother.

“Last Ride….” not anymore Just today, UP donated 3985 and a few other pieces of equipment (including DDA40X 6936 & 2-10-2 5511) to the RRHMA (Railroading Heritage of Midwest America). They are the same people who own and operate MILW 261. Later this year, all pieces of equipment UP is donating will be sent to RRHMA’s recently acquired locomotive complex in Silvis, IL where they will be restored to operating condition. In short, this is not the end for UP 3985. She will back up and running again sometime in the near future.

It certainly will be great to see it back in operation one day. Even better is the fact that it's already essentially per-financed. Fairly unprecedented for a steam restoration of this size. This has been in the making for a long time, and it's exciting to see it finally come to fruition. Now hopefully people will see the intent behind my specific and deliberate messages on this post over the years about how "UP will not be operating this engine again", because it wasn't going to be theirs for much longer. Perhaps I'll change the video title to "most recent ride" or something. lol

While it's sad to see the 3985 go for seemingly good this time, I can honestly understand why they're doing it. It's easy to scream "restore it" from the sidelines. We aren't the ones who have to both invest countless hours into repairing and maintaining this thing as well as bear the costs. I'm part of a small regional railway fan organization here in Switzerland and it's incredible hard to maintain one small engine and a bunch of wooden cars, I can't even beginn to imagine the task of restoring and maintaining this beast of an egine. The 3985 hasn't been operational for nearly a decade now and from what I could gather it's in pretty bad shape. Unlike the 4014 it never got an overhaul from the scratch and the decades of operation have taken their toll. I heard figures of like 7-8 million $ needed to get it fully functional again, that's like a bunch of new Diesel engines. At the end of the day the UP Steam team is still mainly a PR tool for the general puplic in an environment that needs to cut costs as much as possible and with limited budget and manpower. How rational is it to maintain 3 large steam egines operational for about 2, 3 at max, tours per year? Ed Dickens loves these mighty engines more than any of us, I'm sure he didn't take this decision lightly. It's also important to appreciate what we do have instead of always imaging what could have been. For a long time the 3985 was all we had, getting displayed somwhere where she gets taken good care of is better than rotting hidden in the depot forever. And we have two functional legends now with the 844 and 4014 which is anything but given. I would have loved to see that triple header too, but it's just not rationally optainable at this point. Maybe it will be again someday, never say never, but for now, let the 3985 get some well deserved rest.

I’ve been seeing a lot of comments on 3985 being brought back. When I think about that I think about this: As much as I would want 3985 back in operation, it’s not realistic. Keep in mind this program is for the general public, not rail fans. How many people would be able to tell the difference between 4014 and 3985, and more importantly: even care? Also, if 3985 was brought back, then there’s 3 steam engines for what was 3 tours this year, which is what can be expected at most, especially when the tours are so long. In conclusion, it’s just not logical for UP to invest the money for 3985. Heck, we haven’t even seen 844 out since May imagine the roster crunch with 3 steam engines and getting them out each year. We enjoyed 3985, now let’s be grateful and enjoy 4014.

It's not about the money. Ed said it's about the amount of locos that they can run at a time. And if you cannot tell the difference between a 4-6-6-4 and 4-8-8-4 then something is wrong with you. Place them side to side. The difference is obvious!

David Ng right, which was my entire point: why spend the money when you don’t have the ability to run that and two other steam locos more than once a year? While the difference between a Big Boy and Challenger may be apparent to rail fans and others like-minded, The general public out to see a big train may not be able to or wouldn’t care. I bet the most asked question for the crew if they ran 3985 would be: is this the Big Boy?

@ZachPumphery 3 жыл бұрын
The simple answer here is UP wanted an operating 4000 for the 150th Promontory anniversary. They secured financial backing for the project, selected one, restored it, and now they have one. Logistically it's challenge to care for, maintain, and operate one steam locomotive. Two is even more difficult. Three is something UP has never done, and doesn't have the staff to do so. Being perceived as ungrateful in public forum probably isn't enticing them to do any additional favors to the railfan community. One should consider being thankful for the fact that they continue to devote resources towards any steam locomotive when virtually every other railroad their size has largely been unwilling to even host steam on their railroad, much less maintain their own fleet of steam engines.
@3RTracing
@3RTracing 3 жыл бұрын
@@ZachPumphery coming from a railroad building family going all the way back to the 1850's I appreciate the huge amount of resources UP has put towards running well maintained, upgraded and functional steam engines of the likes of the 3985, 844 and 4014. These are three examples of steam power at its best. There is no reason the UP has to do this other than a commitment to history, and the railfan community. That railfan community is far to snarky, opinionated, entitled and devoid of the understanding and knowledge of what it takes in significantly huge resources, infrastructure, engineering staff and facilities, maintenance facilities, ROW steam support means, and a whole incredibly vast set of disciplines and resources necessary to pull this off, which they do, in remarkable fashion. I really love the 3985 and see it as one of those historical benchmarks that UP set in the last decade. But fully understand the need to focus on other diverse motive power examples to give all of us a great opportunity to see everything from a running E9, a beast of a locomotive the DDA 40X, the 844 and now finally, something nobody ever dreamed would happen, a running fully renovated, upgraded and restored 4000 series steam locomotive. Thank you UP for what you have done, are doing and will continue to support.

She's a such a beautiful old girl I hope the hope she gets her day to shine again. Somebody said they scavenged parts off the Challenger for the Big Boy on the other hand they made extra parts for the Big Boy which may be interchangeable. You would think that the Challenger remanufacture would go faster given what they have learned from the 844 and 4014. Freight rail traffic is down and so are UP's profits and share prices which may not be good for the Heritage Program. My hope is that they will come to the so far neglected NW section of UP next Summer and visit Portland and Seattle.

Even if UP had the money to get it up and running again, they decided it's best to run two steam locomotives moving forward but who knows I can't speak for everyone, according to Ed 3985 will remain in the roundhouse along side stable mates 838, 5511, 6936 and the E9's. Maybe in future UP will be able to run 3 steamers in the heritage fleet and will decide to bring back the Challenger to join 844 and 4014.

That being said, the whistle sequence (long long short long) when approaching a crossing is federally regulated, there are signs next to the track to instruct the engineer on when to whistle for said crossings. Union Pacific uses a small sign with an X (for crossing/x-ing), other railroads use a W on that sign. They're commonly known as "whistle boards". They're normally about 1/4 mile from the road. If multiple crossings fall within that first 1/4 mile, the same sign will have a number below the X or W on the post.

It's a shame that we won't see 3985 operate with the 4014 anytime soon. As much I would really want to see the two operate together since the big boy and the challenger locomotives closed an era of steam giants, but at least the 844 is still in operation with the 4014. 844 has a good story behind it as well including having the title as the only steamer to never be retired from a class 1 railroad, so 844 is a legendary locomotive. So are the 3985 and 4014, but since the 3985 is not in service, just hope that the UP doesn't scrap the 3985. The UP can get her running again, but it's not in the plans right now since the 4014 is the UP's big money maker right now plus 4014 is using the tender from 3985 right now as well, so if 3985 would be rebuilt, they will either take the tender off 4014 and use it for 3985, or convert the other tender from big boy and use that for 3985. What ever the reason, the UP can do it. They proved a lot of people wrong of a big boy never operating again, so if they can do that, they can get 3985 working again. Be nice to see it when I'm still on this earth, but I doubt it. So my bucket list for 3985 is moved from seeing it operate to just seeing it on display. 3985 will be even interesting to see on display since it's a legendary locomotive. I just hope the UP can bring it back to operation for future generations of steam train fans to enjoy.

There was even a hammer jury-rigged to its dynamo since it would give out so much from the shoddy maintenance! It had a rope tied to it that led back to the cab where when pulled the hammer would HIT THE DYNAMO to get it started again! 3985 was an absolute mess and hopefully the folks in Silvis will correct all the wrongs done to it. Yes, in the 1940s and 50s. Big difference is that the Challengers were dual service while the Big Boys were virtually exclusive freight (apart from MAYBE 1-2 World War II troop trains, but I've never been able to confirm this). 3985 or her sisters pulled troop trains multiple numerous times during World War II and probably the Korean War also. 4014 and 3985 may have double headed though on a couple of very large freights, back in the day.

3985 is in poor condition. Like, piss-poor condition. Part of the reason 3985 is in such poor condition is it was never given a proper restoration. It was restored in the “give it a hydro and go!” era. That means it was never torn completely apart and made new again. It simply was made to run. When “restored” in 1981, the front engine had tracking issues that were never fixed. It still has those issues, and the front engine hasn’t been out from under 3985 since the 50s. 3985 was simply continually patched and made to run until that caught up with it. Being run hard, never given a proper restoration, continually being patched, and attempting improvements to make the engine run better instead of actually fixing the problems are a recipe for severe mechanical issues. The boiler and firebox are particularly bad, extremely severe issues. It would literally cost more to rebuild 3985 than it did to rebuild 4014.
@blackbirdgaming8147
@blackbirdgaming8147 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t think UP should just leave 3985 be though. It deserves better than to be ignored. I think UP should do one of three options. Option 1: Rebuild 4014’s tender if not done already, return 3985’s tender to its rightful place. Then give 3985 a complete cosmetic restoration on the level of what was done to Big Boy 4012 at Steamtown. Option 2: Turn 3985 into articulated 838 and use it to rebuild 3977. Option 3: Do option 2 but cosmetically restore 3985 afterwards and place it on display where 3977 was.

Why did the UP take 3985 out of service?!
@smeagolplaysgames4517
@smeagolplaysgames4517 3 жыл бұрын
The Challenger suffered from some really bad wear and tear to the firebox, among other components. The cost to repair the 3985 would be about the same that it cost the UP to get 4014 restored; in other words, not cheap. Probably around the $10 million mark. That, and they don't have the staff to maintain and operate three steam locomotives at once. It's sad for sure, I do hope 3985 at least gets cosmetically restored and put on display in a place of honor. It deserves it after its excursion career.

@smeagolplaysgames4517 3 жыл бұрын
@@JACESOFFICIAL Still, they won't do that. 3977 looks ok cosmetically on the outside, but that is in no way indicative of its mechanical condition. The only way to determine that would be to do an actual mechanical inspection of the locomotive, especially the boiler. And I highly, highly doubt that zero repairs would be needed. If $5-10 million was needed to restore 4014, an engine that had enjoyed a fairly mild southern California climate, having it's rods greased every once in a while, along with other mechanical repairs over the years, it stands to reason that 3977, an engine of similar size that did not enjoy those factors, would need the same amount, if not more to be fully restored. And again, the UP doesn't want to maintain three steam locomotives. They have their hands full with two.
