Wow, I am Finnish and I have never heard the whole song! The national pride and sense of identity among Finns flourished just before Russia attacked Finland. Later, some Finns and neighboring peoples wanted to unite as Greater Finland. This meant that Finns wanted to reclaim the territories unfairly occupied by Russia, and there was a dream of ending Russian domination by supporting the neighboring peoples. I vaguely remember learning about this in history class, but I could be wrong. Nowadays, this is not something people dream about or talk about, at least on this side of the border. For the same reason, the Finnish language was long forbidden in schools in the northern parts of Sweden and Norway. I have heard and seen documentaries about this. Students received harsh punishments for speaking Finnish in schools-detentions and even corporal punishment. Our dear neighbors were concerned about rising national sentiment and the desire of Finnic peoples to unite with Finland in Scandinavia.
