Backups are important for so many reasons. I have had backups save my bacon more than once, and I have also learned the hard way how important backups really are. Data loss is no joke, and in this day and age there is truly no reason to have data loss.
Today, I want to cover a really great backup tool that is open source, and not too difficult to get setup. URBackup (like You Are Back Up! - get it?) is a really terrific tool boasting both a Server and Client installation that then makes your backup server (where you store your data) talk to your client machines (where you are backing up your data from) with some nice auto-discovery features built in.

Great video. I always learn a lot. Does this offer a way to browse backups other than the latest one? E.g. If you were doing a full system incremental backups every day could you use the web GUI to restore a single file from a week ago (meaning their would have been 7 incremental backups and you only want to restore the single file not the whole drive)? If so I would love to see how that works. Also would be great to see you restore a system since that is the real reason you would want this. Thank you so much for taking the time to make these great videos!!!

I see, in the Backups tab, each machine I am backing up, and if I click on the machine name, it then takes me to a page where each backup is shown with date and time, etc. From there you can take actions. I can continue clicking down into the levels to get to each file in the Downloads folder, then list out the versions of that file that are backed up as well.

Is there a way to stop the broadcasting and/or put some sort of authentication for clients on the URBackup server? It seems ideal for my use case, except for if I get friends or family on to it, and then they come over. I don't want their machines backing up to my server automatically.
@AwesomeOpenSource

I don't think their stuff would just backup automatically. You could have a friend of family member test this with a small folder on their own system first, then have them come over and see if ti backs up to yours somehow.

@22:36 - you downloaded the windows client off the internet and not off your docker web interface, does it not offer the client at 192.168.7.51:55414 ? @23:58 - it shows the client before you say "you will move on" Can they make the client ask for the server address? and also allow us to change it when we need to?

Yep, I just wasn't paying attention. Later I did download the client from there as well. In my case the issue turned out to be a VPN that was setting it's own firewall, and wasn't turning it back off after the VPN was disconnected.

Hello all, any advice on getting started in IT without going through the help desk? I don't do well communicating on the phone but do just fine in person.
@AwesomeOpenSource
@AwesomeOpenSource Жыл бұрын
A lot of places start you on the helpdesk because it gives you an opportunity to be exposed to the daily issues, and learn the basics of the location / network, etc. But, if you're looking to avoid that as an IT person, you might think of starting your own business. Setup a home lab, and "create" your own issues, then work through solving them. The troubleshooting process is important for success. That's my 2 cents on it...i'm sure others have thoughts as well.

I use it for a auto/Live back up of my phone/Ipad Data.. wouldnt them be Way Easier for a noob trying to get started ? ?
@AwesomeOpenSource
@AwesomeOpenSource 2 жыл бұрын
I've covered NextCloud in the past, but I makea differentiation between a Syncing system, and a backup. A backup keeps historical data with archives of things you may delete from your main system, whereas a syncing service will delete things across systems as you delete them, and so on, thus keeping things in sync. I think NextCloud now has some archive function, but for backups, I prefer a dedicated backup solution. But that's just me. If what you're doing works for you, then definitely keep it up.

I have two machines, a windows 10 desktop with (3) three internal nvme ssd drives, a windows 10 Laptop with (2)two nvme internal drives and (2)two nvme external drives. My idea is to use a mini computer running windows 10 or 11, with a large (maybe a 5T ssd) drive for holding backups, the OS(10/11) on a 128GB nvme drive. populate the mini PC with the windows version of Urbackup server, the Desktop and Laptop with the Urackup client version, and do my backup of files from both machines.
