Welcome to Urban Sketching for Beginners. This simple step by step guide and simple demonstration I draw and paint San Francisco's famous painted ladies. Clouds, People trees and all the houses are included in the scene as well as a fair amount of waffle, as usual. Download the reference image and draw and paint, urban sketch, along with me as I create my own unique version of this iconic view.
Beginning your urban sketching journey can be intimidating but so much fun. Beginners will be on the steepest part of the learning curve so persistence will give great result quickly. Prioritize your process not your perfectionism. There is a virtuous circle or enjoying the process, so you draw more, so you learn more, so you draw more. Do not not make the mistake of thinking its all about the end product.

People often look at art and drawing as the whole urban sketching process and that can put people off from even trying to create. This simple demo will show the basic stages of urban sketching and how to create an interesting image with line work and watercolour.
Urban Sketching requires minimal equipment and therefore is a very accessible for newbies. It is essentially not only a reflection of your landscape but also what it means to be within the fabric of it. You can include the people, the street furniture and interpret those details any way you want. The sketchbook is a playground. It can also be a very sociable art form with urban sketching groups in most cities.

Love all of this, the cityscape’s great and the overall looseness is so appealing. You’re very good at making drawing and painting feel enjoyable and unthreatening. I especially liked the references to becoming comfortable with individual style - in my case it took a long time but was liberating when I stopped wanting to be someone else and settled for being myself! 🙂

Love that you took that road trip... west coast through the south is a great route! What did you think of the vast differences in architecture? But especially in New Orleans!

Thanks so much for taking the time to comment. It was a fabulous trip and yes the changes in architecture, plant and climate were pretty big yet it it a huge country. I would love to return and travel the east coast. Hopefully one day.
