Hi everyone, thanks for tuning in for this sketchbook tour. I'm super excited to show you my sketches, and talk you through my thoughts, processes, experiments, and hopefully inspire you guys a little or just give you some confidence or ideas.

In this video I'm going to show you my (almost) filled sketchbook from Chile, Argentina and the Patagonia region! There are tonnes of sketches - some ink, some watercolour, some great...
.... erm some less so :S
But I'm going to show you them ALL.
I love being able to show everything, and to also show you guys that mistakes don't matter - even the bad sketches have something good, something I learned, or something to laugh about :) Having everything together in a sketchbook gives you memories and a story to relive too!

I think it very honest of you to show where you were not so satisfied with the result of a sketch, as well as those works that came out well. Liked your clear explanation of where you felt things went wrong, but you learned from the errors that occur. This is a very positive information to those of us beginning to sketch; thanks for showing us your sketches - certainly not boring!!

After a lot of apprehension, I finally started loose sketching with watercolour. I have nice pictures of Venice when I visited before COVID. The pictures have a lot of texture and I struggled to reduce those to what was essential, reproducing the colour I wanted for the sketch, it looks a bit primary and my line work hasn't got the style I'd like yet. Overall it wasn't great, but it's a start. I just wanted to share that.

And I'm really glad you shared too, thanks! It takes time to develop a style, and you'll always have good days and bad days. Pop the sketches away for a week and look at them again, you'll find you like them a lot more after some space from them!

I liked this sketchbook tour. Your sketches in it feel a little different from what you share in your regular tutorials. I feel like you could have spent even more time talking about the drawings. I hope you start to share the hatching and limited color style in some tutorials. I'd be interested in a video covering what you brought with you and what worked and didn't.

Ahh thanks Bryan - I didn't want to bore people, but next time I'll do some longer chatting about them. I will make sure to share some of this 'style' in upcoming videos for sure - I think some of the difference is because almost all of these sketches were on location, vs sat at my desk - it's hard to replicate the lack of comfort at home and how that impacts my sketching :P but I'll put in some conscious effort!

This was a very enjoyable sketchbook tour. I actually would like to hear more details, a little bit about the thought process behind more of the pages. . I have almost completed your Skillshare class on "Lines, Pen and Ink" and can see how you used the hatching techniques in this video. Nicely done!

I love that you share it all. Also nice to see that sometimes its just sketching and we dont need to add color. Do you have a video on crosshatching? Going on a trip this spring to Mexico. Going to try to break off from our group each day for some sketching time. I am new and dont want people watching or rushing me. What is your favorite travel light kit?

This is a great question Angela - I've actually got a video coming out very soon (might even be today) with my set up, and then I'm also experimenting with another set up (video out in March sometime)... in short, you don't need much even just a sketchbook, a couple of pens, small pan of colours. My lightest set up is a small freezer back with these things inside! I've popped on my to do list to write a little blog post this week with a bit more info on my website

Thank you for sharing with us your travel sketchbook, this is so inspiring! I have an upcoming Japan trip soon and want to sketch my travel, this will be my first time! I was wondering if the sketching and painting you did were on location or did you take a picture and did it in during your free time? I do want to them when I see something that catches my eye to sketch, I'm afraid I won't be able to do so unless I actually take the time to do it! But I also don't want to bother my partner who'll be with me in the trip and waiting for me to finish 😆

A mix of on location and from photos :) I try to do location, but it's not always possible as you say!
