As a retired NYC teacher, I cannot afford to live in Manhattan. But I live in Floral Park Village in a garden apartment cooperative. I have a 4 minute walk to the FP LIRR station. According to the LIRR draft schedules, my station will have hourly trains to Penn Station and hourly trains Grand Central Madison. They’re just 35-40 from the city.

@@mikvas8088 "Garden Apartments" are apartments in a numerically small cluster of apartment buildings. The individual apartment buildings are only 2 to 4 stories tall.

@@mikvas8088 I apologize for taking so long to answer your question. A cooperative is 1 or a number of apartment buildings. You do not rent the apartment, you buy shares in the entire complex. My complex was built in 1953 as rentable apartments. In 1986, it changed to a cooperative. The other type of apartment ownership is a condominium, in which you purchase a specific apartment unit.

Im trying to move there for Nobody cares Texas. If I'm not able to move to New York, then i will try to mover to London. I like that NY has really good public transportation (I mean in length there's a station everywhere) and it's really diverse people as I'm Indian. Over here in Texas i am always being called an Indian curry muncher by stereotypes as theirs no diversity here. I really hope im able to move there or if im not then maybe London or some other place where i will feel welcomed. Great video Btw.

Happy new yorking! If it's not a side hustle you should really get into instructional video production for other brands/industries. All of your videos are concise and clear. Others ruin their products with endless unnecessary over produced clips/vids.

Happy New Yorking! The wife, baby, and I are hoping to move to NYC from Vancouver for grad school and I can't tell which is more daunting: trying to get into Columbia or bare-knuckling it in the NYC rental market 😂. Thankfully Vancouver has already served as our reality check for the rental market!

As a recent admit to a Columbia grad program, it’s definitely housing and cost of living that’s harder-after the initial elation comes the moment of “oh no, how will I pay for this”

Zurich, Switzerland is very similar. Most apartments do not have laundry inside, but instead there is a wash room in the basement with washing machine + dryer, often more of them depending on the nr of apartments in the building. And a car is not needed in Zurich, either. In fact it is rather a burden, because insurance + tax + parking costs a lot while most of the time you do not even use it. So I also sold my car. Public transportation is perfect in Zurich, and very good in the countryside, too, with regional buses connecting to long-distance trains at the stations. And when you really need a car, renting one for a day or two still comes much cheaper than owning one.

Perfect video! I lived in Jersey but always was in NYC. One thing it taught me was to plan deep. Plan A, Plan B, and even plan C. Plan C I never used but it made me super relaxed in a world where everything goes wrong every day! I do think Newark and Elizabeth, NJ are affordable alternatives to NYC. Maybe a vid on that would be worthwhile. BTW when I moved to Florida and the apt. had a washer/dryer, I thought I had gone to heaven!! I could stay at home and do laundry....WOW!

A growing trend in newly renovated NYC apartments is to include an in-apartment stacked washer/dryer pair. One can come home, start the laundry in the washer, start dinner, move the laundry to the dryer, eat dinner, then fold the laundry after dinner while watching TV. Much easier than schlepping to a central laundry room or, worse, a neighborhood laundromat.

These chairs hold up for a very long time. So buying them used is a good way to save. Even the older models still hold up their value.

Hi 👋 I hope you get this question. I think the most beautiful views of NY come from Brooklyn NY and Hoboken NJ yet the upper west and east sides of Manhattan come with a prestigious address. If you were able to buy a property to rent out or vacation in, which area would you choose? If the views are beautiful would all 3 command the same rental income? Thanks in advance.
@UrbanCaffeine
@UrbanCaffeine Жыл бұрын
Hi there! Yes, the coasts of Brooklyn, Queens, Hoboken, and Jersey City all have great views because they face the Manhattan skyline. And they are all great places to live. But for me, I care more about how close the place is to the subway. I would prioritize that over a view. So if I were to choose, I'd like to own property in either Brooklyn or Queens that are close to a lot of subway lines so it's easy to get to Manhattan. With Hoboken and other places in NJ, you'd have to take the PATH first before getting to Manhattan. But different people care about different things.

HAPPY NEW YORKING! Okay love the content and presentation found this episode enlightening. But... I'm not here to talk about that. I just didn't want to pass up this opportunity to have your attention. Want I did want to talk about was the backpack episode you made a while back. I was a longtime backpacker but now I'm all in on shoulder bags. Lots of reasons but the two biggies are. One they never come off. Walking, standing, sitting, catching a nice nap in the park, outside, inside on the bus always on. Two accessibility. They are like pockets I hardly use my pants pockets any more. I can quickly and easily get to everything again without removing them I need keys, wallet, bus pass, marijuana all well organized in my left segmented bag. Yes that's right I use two the left is organized into separate sections a place for everything and everything in its place. The right one is one big bag and it's for bringing items home, shopping etc. I still use backpacks and duffels for laundry day and big shopping but guess what? I can still use the shoulder bags all three fit. I could go on but I feel I've already made my case. So please forgive the off topic but the original episode comments section is full and I really wanted to chime in on the satchel debate. So please keep up the good work we the subscribers really enjoy it and yes I still find your voice is really nice to listen to.
@UrbanCaffeine

Thanks! I didn't even know there was a satchel backpack debate. Glad you're able to find what works for you. Organization is indeed key! I sometimes use a shoulder bag now and again because it's convenient when pulling things out, but I still prefer a backpack because I've had problems with my neck and back over time and my PT has advised to use a backpack when possible.

Happy New York-ing! 5:20 As a “high earner making the beaucoup bucks”, I’m quite proud of how well I’ve resisted lifestyle inflation in the city. My wife and I make $1M+/year but have been spending only ~10% per year for the last 4 years. I love the great equalizer that is NYC’s public transit. Nowhere else in America do all levels of society interact like the subway.
