That is right on with what I am trying to do. Farming during the growing season and woodwork in the winter. I do woodworking with hand tools using mostly Paul Sellers' methods. The market garden is transitioning to what Curtis and JM do. Interesting to hear someone else is doing almost the same thing.

You could try winter farming. There are some amazing videos online for how to do that effectively.

Enrique Becerra I would recommend using a local source for good compost, as it is usually a cheaper and fresher product. Also many cities have composting programs and can give or sell you compost, just make sure to find out the ingredients and only use it if you feel comfortable with the contents. A local compst company i have used can also deliver to your property, if you dont have a vehicle large enough to pick up - i have also seen folks put a tarp in their car trunk and fill it up with compost. The compost at the big box stores will not scale up at an affordable price, nor will the quality be as good as trusted local compost company.

Before Obamacare -aka- The Affordable Care Act millions of U.S. citizens didn't have health insurance because they could not afford it or because they were not qualified to have it. Hundreds of Thousands (probably millions if we are being rational) have "preexisting medical conditions" where no health insurance companies would sell them an insurance plan. A preexisting condition is a medical condition that started before a person's health insurance went into effect, or if you have a lapse in coverage -for example if you are between jobs. Loads of people across the country, but mostly in the poorest areas -which are the states that mostly vote republican/ have republican leaders, were in a tough place where if their employer closed, or they got fired, or they wanted to leave their job, they would lose their health insurance, and/or not be able to pay for it anymore. Many were trapped at jobs they wanted to quit be couldn't because if they did, the "pre-exisiting condition" rules would kick in and every single insurance company would deny them coverage (there are only a few insurance companies to choose from in the U.S. , and in some states there is only one choice). So when they lost their insurance they would not be able to get health insurance again because they have a "preexisting condition" Well that was all before the Affordable care Act aka -"Obamacare". Luckily with Obamacare health insurers can no longer charge more or deny you coverage to you or your child because of a pre-existing health condition like asthma, diabetes, or cancer. They cannot limit benefits for that condition anymore either. Once you have insurance, they can't refuse to cover treatment for your pre-existing condition. The alternative of paying extra in taxes, but being guaranteed dental care, and health care is a small price to pay for the safety and security and comfort of knowing that even in the worst of circumstances I will have healthcare, no matter how bad it gets. I would rather have cancer in a country where I will be able to get treatment for it, than die from it in the U.S. knowing I could have lived. This happens all the time. They found after Obamacare went into effect that U.S. citizens were a lot sicker than the Department of Health realized. The republicans hopefully will adjust "Obamacare" to be even better than the first plan. I hope they improve upon it. Health insurance should be a right, not a privilege. Republicans would prefer to remove Obamacare and go back to the old system because it makes their investments money. But with the pressure on them to do the right thing, they have been slow to repeal it. We need health insurance for all. Not for the few.

I only comment on my experience and never said if that was the absolute truth everywhere. I could be different depending on where you are.

Depends whether you want to market your goods as organic. If you want to be able to market them as organic, you've got to have some form of certification to do so (in Australia, with our strong consumer protections. ymmv). If you want to market them as 'practically organic' or something similar, you can probably get away with that

Kids can really help a lot. Our three over here love to do different things... one likes to get dirty, another lover seeing them grow, and the other loves to "cook" with them, and will often make herb requests. (I think we have a baby chef on our hands.) Surprising personality traits are on full display, when kids are encouraged to participate. Best of luck and I hope you have already tried this.
