As an old biker living of a pension, I am on a budget so I have to be creative. Layering is the key and in my case it looks like this: Thermo legging, Revvit riding jeans, Nordic woolen socks, insulated boots. Upper body: short sleeve t-shirt, long sleeve t-shirt, light sweater, thick fleece sweater, Dianese hoody, a winter jacket, and to make it complete, long insulated gloves. It’s a bit bulky but it does the job.🙂 Did 25 miles last week in a temperature of 5 degrees without any issues. BTW, I only ride when it’s dry.

First...this is 2023...you don't need to keep wearing BLACK clothes FFS! For the last few years I have used colored jackets, much easier for cagers to see me on dull, cloudy days, of which you in the UK have a lot. Expensive motorcycle clothing, supposedly waterproof, often is not. When I am back in the UK I wear yachtsman's waterproof bib and brace over-pants with matching jacket on cold/and or rainy days. Pretty much 100% waterproof. They come in a variety of different colour options. Steel toed industrial rubber boots on my feet. Again 100% waterproof. Normal thick winter socks are fine. Gore-tex ski gloves...sure they get wet, but they stay warm even then. Leather or waxed jacket underneath the over-suit. Thermal long johns under jeans or cargo pants. If it's really freezing cold then a couple of magazines or a newspaper stuck down inside the chest area of the jacket. You can also use a thin foam insert, cut to shape. Bandana around neck. I have ridden all over the world using this set-up. My longest non-stop rides in constant heavy rain: Rode Dorking to Cairnryan, over to Larne and then down to Ballynahinch in Northern Island in one day, non-stop except for petrol, on a 1982 BMW R100. Rained most of the way. Arrived in Bally dry as a bone except for my soaked (but still reasonably warm) hands. Did the return trip a week later, again, one day ride, again rained most of the way back to Brockham. When other riders are complaining of being wet or being extremely cold I am barely inconvenienced. No need to spend big money to keep warm and dry...the cheaper end of yachting rain gear is cheaper than motorcycle specific clothing.

For the hands, one of the best ways to keep them warm is to keep the wind off them entirely. Brush guards work well, which you can see throughout the video. There are also textile options that offer a semi-universal fit. Same principle, just something that blocks the wind from hitting your hands. Works especially well with heated grips, so you can wear thinner gloves while keeping just as warm if not warmer than if you were wearing massive winter gloves

I use the big goofy handlebar mittens. Most of the time I don't need gloves although I always keep a pair inside my coat so if I need them, they are already warm.

I wore latex gloves under my normal gauntlets for years. The latex doesn't let your body warmth out and it does a bang up job of keeping "cold air" off your skin. It's not "warm" but my hand were never cold either. Super easy and cheap.

IMO, handlebar muffs are a much better investment before you buy heated gloves. They can't run out of power or burn out heating elements, and you'll never have wet hands in any rain.

They slowly lose heat as you ride. In town probably no big deal but 45 minutes down a motorway or dual carriageway and my hands were blocks of ice despite the furry lining of the bar muff. They also would press on my brake and clutch lever too. Would not recommend muffs at all, unless there was active heating (heated grips for example) of some kind in them.

when I was younger, so much younger than today we didn't have any of these things to keep us warm. If needed we took or bought a newspaper, the thicker the better. a Sunday paper was best. and placed it under our outer jacket and across the chest and that acted as an insulation against cold and wet weather. That still works today but it doesn't cover the arms. If the weather changes and you are caught out in it then a newspaper or similar can help keep your core temperature warmer. Also for cold hands then under the gloves wear a pair of see through diesel gloves. They do help to keep ones hand a little warmer and a plastic bag worn above ones socks and obviously under the boots will help with ones feet. I noticed that the gloves shown all were worn above the jacket sleeve . The problem with that is that if ones arms are above the gloves wrist fastenings then when wet in rain it will run down the arm and into the glove. That is not recommended. So buy and wear two types of gloves, one that fits above the wrist and over the jacke5t sleeve and another pair that will fit around the wrist and be worn under the jacket sleeve. ok. Finally at 6.29 we are shown the fitting of over trousers at the lower leg above the feet but we are shown wearing a pair of what can only be described as summer fashion shoes or trainers. They are not to be recommended at all for any form of motorcycling or scooter riding. I live on the coast but some 10 miles away are the Pennines and there is a difference in temperature and weather summer and winter alike between those two areas. The temp on those hills can be as much as 5/6 deg. colder than at sea level so bear that in mind as to where you will be riding too. or through. Its one thing setting off with an ambient temp of say 15/6 deg. but an hour later you are in single figures. So Bear that in mind and safe riding. PS. if you do suffer in poor weather conditions don't suffer for too long. Don't try to ride through it. Don' delay and allow yourself to get too cold. Hypothermia, the cooling of the core of the body and brain can kill you or someone else so if you are too cold. Stop regularly and warm up with some food but not over facing the stomach and drink warming drinks but absolutely no alcohol. .

One if the biggest challenges when riding in low temperatures if poor traction from motorcycle tires. Most M/C tires have their best grip when warm. Their coefficient of friction drops like a rock with low temperatures. Don't ask how I know this... Balaclavas: - Make sure there's breathing openings for the mouth and nose. Otherwise that area will become wet, cold, and very uncomfortable. Keep your visor open a crack to prevent condensation inside the helmet. Jeans: - The cotton in most jeans absorbs moisture, and does little to block the cold air. Best to buy M/C pants with ballistic padding that are also water-proof/water-resistant. Marino Wool long-johns to keep in the body heat. Heated gear: - Be aware these tend to draw a fair bit of current, and may tax the output from your alternator, especially on a smaller bike. Take shorter rides, and check the condition of your battery after. You don't want to find you can't start after your gear has run your battery down when you're 200-miles from home... Winter riding is never as enjoyable as riding in warm weather. Sometimes it just makes more sense to take the car...

I keep layering pretty simple. My riding suit is pretty good at shielding me from rain, wind and cold until the temperature goes below freezing, so until then I always just wear that and occasionally the detachable extra layer that comes with the suit. When it gets colder than that, I put on snowmobile riding gear while using my normal riding suit as the inner layer. I don't always need the latter for warmth but it provides protection.

Heated gloves are a game changer. There's a point(usually normal highway speeds in the us) where they chill, and no matter how thick your gloves are they are cold AF. I do wish they would make a cheaper nicer option, or have replaceable heating elements tho. Even my $400 pair of AStars didn't hold up to a winter season of riding, and the rest of the year in storage. Stopped heating on the last 3 fingers of my right hand. Pretty sure they would warranty them out, but then I'd be without gloves for a week or 2. So I guess i'll deal till it warms back up.

Year around rider here on the West Coast of Canada. Like the guy below me says, hand guards, which you should have touched on. Heated gloves will not keep your hands that warm, but hand guards help a little bit. Snow pants/snow boarding pants are a god send at keeping your legs warm, and put rain gear over that and you are nice and warm.

After years of winterriding and getting cold after a while I started using a heated jacket (warm&safe) in 1999. What a difference. Heated grips in combination with muffs are top and I can ride all winter with midseason gloves this way. I never have cold feet and for my legs I wear my downpants under the Rukka. I never leave on holiday or a day of touring without the heated innerjacket. Keeping the just in case rule in my mind brought me warmth when needed 😊

Youll never stay warm on a bike without a screen some kind of leg shields, hand guards , electric grips and or gloves, i never got cold feet because i rode a BMW flat twin with foot flaps, you don't need special layers if you keep out of the wind, remember if you're riding to work youll have to work in them or Ponce about getting changed which will put you off and youll end up taking the car, i rode most winters for 20years did an unbroken run of 12 years commuting , bike rallies, camping, riding in appalling conditions, i loved it , all on my trusty BMW 1000cc R45, too old now the reflexes and running at the world have wained, some VERY good advice here, great video

The best way to keep hands warm is without a doubt the mitten type gloves, on the large size with gloves underneath. A heated pad on your lower back is fantastic also. Merino wool is worth the money. Its not brave or clever riding in snow or icy conditions, I’ve crashed every year ive done that and the most frightening experience of my life was being caught in a blizzard on the way home from work on the bike on a motorway, unable to see 20 ft ahead with cars speeding past me.

In winter, if i use the bike, i do it for leasure. So i simply wear full Dainese winter gear, which integrates both mid and top laters, and it's water resistant. Obviously if you need to get to work, wearing different layers with a lower layer usable as a stand alone clothing, is more useful. I would consider putting heated grips on any new bike i will own.

Heated gear makes a huge difference. Im from Texas so our riding season is usually longer than the rest of the US. After I got my heated gear I tested it out when it was 32F/0C outside and I was just fine. It is an investment in your comfort which leads to better concentration on the road and a better ride all around. My gear is the Hotwire brand. Boot inserts, pants, jacket, and glove inserts, and they plug into one another and then into the SAE plug on my bike that I use to charge the battery.

Getting cold hands and feet comes from restricted bloodflow to your extremities in an attempt to keep the core of your body warm. If your core is warm, your extremities stay warm. I gutted a cheap add on heated car seat mat (ALDI) and incorporated the electronics to the inside of an old all weather motorcycle jacket. It has a lead with a fuse and 3 level switch. Connected the lead to the bike and never had cold hands or feet after that. Directly warming your hands or feet is solving the symptoms, not the underlying problem. There are aftermarket solutions like this but they cost way more than this €15 DIY job.

I ride down to 20 F (-7 c), the lower temperature my touring tires are supposed to retain pliability and traction. Wool socks with a water proof riding boot to block the wind. Top-wool/poly base layer, long sleeve cotton shirt, wool mid layer under a well treated wax cotton outer layer to stop the wind. Bottom-PCM (phase change material) mid layer under a well treated wax cotton outer layer on the touring bike, I add a wool/poly base layer if on my naked bike. Balaclava and/or aneck gator, Pinlock visor insert to prevent fogging even in drizzly mid 30’s F (2 C). Mylar glove liner in a heated glove leather glove. Typically only need the heat 20 to 30F (-7 to 0 C). Low when on the touring bike, may need high on the naked at highway /motorway speeds. 6 hour/2hour battery life respectively. I have heated grips on the touring bike, only use intermittently as it nears 20F (-7 C) or when the heated gloves are off. I have been investigating hand guards but haven’t found anything I feel is a good fit on either bike. I don’t recall ever turning on the heated seat since I got the waxed cotton and PCM liner. Since the naked doesn’t have auxiliary heated components, I typically won’t ride it if the ride is longer than an hour once under 32 F (0 C), I’ll take the touring bike for rides longer than an hour.

I usually ride nights through Dec-January to the club where I'll be dancing, so I dress very casual and am usually in some light weight pants that the win cuts straight through. Riding in the snow isn't bad around town, but I wouldn't go on the highway. A big parka and 100% waterproof mitts are all you really need, heated glove liner inside to seal the deal. I've gone wearing a skirt and silk blouse during -15c nights in the snow and been well enough to make a 20-30 minute ride across town as long as my hands are okay. Mitts might reduce dexterity but wind cutting through all the seams in your glove's fingers are going to make your hands so cold you can't use the levers in the first place, so I don't bother with gloves. Bonus, I've wiped out a few times in the winter wearing goose down puffers and they don't even tear after a slide, because the road is so slippery from the snow.

Canadian here. One thing I've found super useful is armoured layers under the top layer, like the Knox Urbane Pro. My usual cold weather setup from head to toe/inner-outer is Helmet, merino neck gaiter, baselayer (merino or Columbia omni-heat), midlayer (wool), armour, battery powered heated vest, Goretex/Sympatex layer (surplus Austrian military kit), merino glove liners, riding gloves, longjohns, armoured jeans, outer goretex layer, wool socks, chunky boots. This will get you over mountains at 4-7C easily (I just did three weeks riding over mountains on a Street Twin, I promise it works). Wearing armour under the outer layer lets you not have to buy riding specific outer layers, which is a huge cost saver. Also helps with mobility, motorcycle outer layers are usually pretty stiff for the slide and I feel like the Michelin Man wearing them, with armoured layers that fit tighter I usually feel more mobile.

When I've had cold hands I have been known to grab the very hot exhaust as a last resort. Couple of things to remember if you decide to do this 1) don't hold on long enough to feel the heat, there is a delay between the glove heating up and feeling the heat, by the time you can feel the heat your glove will be too hot . 2) don't do it with wet gloves, the water starts to boil and even a short grab will create boiling steam sitting right next to your hand. 3) be prepared to replace your gloves more regularly if do it all the time the heat makes them less effective for protection.
@bobjohnson1633
@bobjohnson1633 6 ай бұрын
If you do this with bare hands, there is still a delay. Tap and use no pressure. Only on objects you KNOW are under 300⁰F. You can judge how hot and safe it is by light tapping and eventually holding for longer periods, such as a second or two.

LEATHER. I'm old school, and it works. Under-layers, yes, of course, (silk, cotton-weave or electric glove liners).. but othewise, no textiles. Don't believe in 'em. Leather, (including good pants), is hard-shell against wind and offers great abrasion resistance. BUT- at this point in my long riding career, I won't go out.. or certainly very far.. in sub-50 degree F. What FOR? I own a CAR.

Best way to keep your hands warm - wear a heated waistcoat. A warm core, keeps that warm blood pumping to your extremities. I used to ride in ice and snow wearing standard summer gloves (alpine star SP1), with a heated vest from keis and at motorway speeds. Bar muffs - are difficult. At motorway speeds I found they collapsed onto the clutch and brake, super dangerous super sketch. They also cooled down over a period of time so without active heating resulted in being just as cold. Heated grips - effective but at higher speeds your fingers will be feeling the cold on the back of them. Can be very distracting and uncomfortable. Heated gloves - great, but then you notice your cold crotch, cold feet, cold body generally. Heated in-soles - right faff to get ready, but effective at keeping your feet warm. Same issue with gloves though heating your extremities doesnt really do much for your torso. Heated waistcoat... That's the badger. It's honestly amazing how much a difference it makes. I wouldn't have believed it either but it does.

Handlebar muffs beat everything, ugly and interfere with controls but best of all. Heated grips yes, but avoid the Oxford overgrips, easy to fit but will give you carpal tunnel/wrist issues making your 22mm grips more like 40mm and your clutch hand suffers.

What a load of tosh.. I've been riding for over 50yrs all year round all conditions and many other countries . Bought most of the the top brands over the years none of it either lasted any reasonable time or lived up to what it was advertised to do. Sick and tired of wasting time and money. just to line fat cat pockets. But on the plus side of being a boat owner .conditions on the open waters too can have bad to extreme conditions. more so than on the roads. so a fair while back I purchased a trawler jacket and have never ever, been dryer or warmer whilst riding my bikes. Bike clothing would fail on the deck of a north sea trawler. its about time people realized. the top brands just want your money. Buy a karra jacket and bottoms Also some seal skin socks and over mitts total cost around 450 job done. Wonder what your lot adds up to??.
