With its grand opening in 1933, The Catskill Game Farm zoo was one of the first privately owned zoos in the United States. Sitting on almost 1000 acres, with only 150 acres open to the public, this zoo housed over 1500 animals. In the early years, it started as a zoo that comprised mostly of game farm animals (pigs, horses, deer, donkeys, etc). Around 1960, the zoo was allowed to expand to more exotic animals. Most of the zoo was used to breed animals for other zoos in the United States. Of it 1000 acres, only 150 acres were open to the public for viewing. However in 2006, after being open for 73 years, the zoo closed down. It closure was due to financial issues, less attendance, and legal regulations that the park failed to follow. The park today is privately owned with hope to turn it into something. The owners do offer private tours by visiting the game farm website and they have been actively working on renovating some of the buildings. Sources: Wikipedia

So sad to see something that was a part of my childhood just wasted away. It was always fun going upstate to the Catskills. At least we still have Adventure Land here on Long Island, my dad worked there when I was a child. Thanks for the explore Steve.

BellasMomma-Yes me too. We took a road trip with our cousins, 2 adults, 5 kids and our family 2 adults, 5 kids. We went a few times. Went throughout the late 60's and 70's. Catskill was so much fun for kids!!!!!

Our parents used to take my brothers and I to this Game Farm every summer back in the 70s I actually thought this place was still operating, this was shocking for me to see, and sad as well, we had a lot of good times there, "wow; this is a shame, I even took my son in the late 80s to the Game farm. I had no idea it closed down, this was the first for me hearing this.

I went on a field trip to the park in 1958 when I was in the 1st grade. Montgomery Elementary. My Dad was stationed at Stewart AFB and we lived in Rock Tavern out in the BOONDOCKS. Right by Whalenburgh Pond. The farm is no longer there. The Whalenburgh family owned the farm for MANY years and the elder mother rented half her farmhouse to us. Absolutely cool as shit, filled with antiques from Holland and Germany.

It's hard to believe that this zoo had existed for 73 yrs. The dog is trying to warn you about something! This is a very interesting video to take a trip back into the past then into the present.

Really cool explore. Looked like there might have been some get togethers in the pool table area. Lol. Sure was alot of cool stuff left to explore. Bet that place was alot of family fun, back in the day. Thanks for a great explore.

I went to this place a few times as a kid. It is very sad to see it gone because it was a Great "Staple" Icon of the capital region here.

If it wasnt for zoos many animal species would be extinct. Zoos animals are protected. Also zoos no longer get animals from the wild so most animals know no different. They are born and raised in captivity.

I was born in '98 and me and my family went every summer until they closed. The only things I remember well were the elephants, the elephant rides and the giraffes just inside the front gate. Pity to see what it's become.

Weird to see this. I used to go here as a kid back in the 80s/early 90s. I have more mixed feelings on zoos nowadays but when I was a kid I loved it there. There was also a place nearby called the Reptile Institute which we would usually visit the same day as the game farm. I wonder what the backstory on that peahen is. Have peafowl from the park been living feral and breeding since 2006 or did somebody just dump that peahen there for some reason?

A lot of those small zoos like this one start out as great like they really care about the animals then they get sold to people who just don’t put the money into maintenance

wow i went there in the early 90's. i had no clue it had closed. Kinda strange seeing it the way it is in this video. I don't remember much from it but just seems sad to see somewhere I was so long ago, probably walking some of those same paths you are in the video that used to be filled with life and kids running all around having a great time now looks like something out of a fallout game.

I worked there for one summer. The animals were miserable, very few people visited, and the owners grandson was a spoiled douche that didn’t take no for an answer. Seeing his red four wheeler made me laugh! However, I have a lot of great memories of feeding the animals, chilling with them during lunch breaks, and the peacocks scaring people! I hoped the place would turn around, it’s sad to see it abandoned.

That’s a hour away from where I grew up most of the kids in my school neighborhood went but I never did my mom didn’t have a car we grew up poor . I was hoping my the time I grew up had my own car I could go and see it but it’s long gone . I Remember kids coming back with t shirts and toys from there . 😢 makes me sad I couldn’t ever see it in person
