Exploring an abandoned Power Plant with Coal
This abandoned power plant was built in the early 1900's and provided power for a state institution up the hill. This power plant was coal driven. The Reading Railroad would provide weekly drop offs of coal to this power station. The state school / hospital had issues with abuse and neglect and was ordered to close in 1986. The school remained with power up till 1991 when the light switch, in other words, was turned off for the entire campus. This power plant remained vacant and still does today. Coal can still be found inside which I thought was very cool. A lot of decay inside this one too. I did not explore everything due to the sketchy catwalks but it was still cool to see some older equipment. Hope you all enjoy.

Superb walk-through. Thanks Steve! I'm writing a thriller novel set in a derelict 1930s coal power station, and this is the perfect atmospheric material. It would have been a lot to ask, I know, but some guiding pointers at each stage - like "this is the turbine area" and "here's the boiler room" e.t.c would give a little extra navigation... but only because it would assist my research. Great stuff! :)

This looks like the Steam Plant on Pig Alley at the Binghamton Psychiatric Center in Binghamton, NY. If it is, the Steam Plant shut down before the 1990's. I would know, as my mother retired from the BPC in 1991, and I spent a lot of time up there, before I graduated from High School, volunteering. FYI, all of those pipes are covered with Asbestos, which is why the State of NY will not demolish the plant! The coal was received across Court Street by train in a large coal bin system. The plant provided steam for the old resident buildings, that most of which were torn down in the 1980's and 90's, thus no longer need for the plant! It was not an Electric Generation Plant.

That area you recorded first, on the outside, the large concrete chutes/draw-troughs, thats where the hopper cars used to deliver the coal if memory serves.. coal hoppers from that time period were built with a mechanism in their frames to allow them to be tilted and emptied from one side, almost like if a dumptruck dumped from its sides instead of the back. We had a powerstation very very similar to this one that provided steam and electricity at the huge Marcal paper Co. factory near Paterson.. The same type of concrete abutment/chutes slide system, set right next to the tracks. At the turn of the 20th century, there were many factories, hospitals, and other large installations that would more often than not have their own power plants on the property. And so to increase efficiency and speed of delivery, the owners/operators of these places would usually factor and build a rail spur line into their properties, off of a nearby mainline/branchline. I imagine a big part of why this was done was likely because most infrastructure utilized DC-current at the time, and DC cant travel long distances the way AC can..

Hey Steve ... there are several times in your video where you were right next to asbestos (carcinogen) ... if the wind was blowing even a little and you breathe in even a small amount of asbestos you could experience real issues down the road. The plant was probably abandoned because it would cost more to remove and clean up the asbestos that the whole plant was worth!!!

I don't think you ever managed to get to the engine room floor. The thing you are looking at at 2:46 is probably the condenser hood and water box, which is always right below the turbine.
