Exploring Old Decaying Train - Locomotives - Coaches
Built in various year between 1930s-1970s these no longer in service locomotives and coaches are sitting and rotting away. Why they are sitting is unknown, but it is said that the locomotives were taken out of service due to new FRA rules restricting use of friction bearings. Although there was not a lot of locomotives, there are two 1950s Built EMD (Electro-Motive Diesel) F7a Locomotives and a Switcher Diesel. There is many various coaches from dining cars, caboose, baggage car and lastly there is a Budd Car. The equipment belongs to a railroad but from the looks, you can see not much is being done with them and taggers / vandals have been here doing their destruction. As a major railroad guy, it saddens me seeing these beautiful monsters being destroyed by some stupid kids!

The two locomotives, formerly owned by the Southern Railroad of NJ, have been purchased by the Reading and Northern Railroad. In August 2017 I photographed them parked on a siding in Schuylkill Haven, PA. They will be fully restored to operation and will be used on the R&N's executive office car inspection train.

Not rotting. He just failed to show the shop. These may just be sitting as scrap for parts but several pieces are being actively restored. It is a working railroad.

Anon Nymous well it ain't as easy as ya think to repair this. I mean this things ain't easy to rebuild. I don't think there is anyone left in the world that knows how to make this thing run again

Camden 4545 because these units were so plentiful, and so recent, along with the fact that most manufacturers used the same tooling on all their locomotives, parts aren’t hard to come by. It’s the regulations set by the government that make it difficult.

The white car at the beginning is one of 200 ex-US Army Hospital cars built in 1944, later sold to a number of RRs. The coach interior had "walkover seats" whose seatbacks flip over reversing the seating directions. The little center-cab loco is a General Electric "44-Tonner" switcher.

Everytime I see old locomotives, I always take a few seconds to think about the history that each piece has. 40 years ago, they were pulling goods or passenger wagons, and to think now they rest after years of service is mesmerizing. Even the passenger wagon, to think thousands of people have used those seats is something small yet special. Regarding grafitti, I usually adore the art especially when its done on huge murals, however dinky tags on old locomotives is a lack of respect.

Those trains stopped their for their final destination, it would be awesome to see somebody make a tune up on these diesels and get them running again. It's an amazing thing to see something abandoned but then brought back to life.

Steve, thank you again so much for your videos!! Been many years since I was able to explore for myself and yours bring back the excitement and learning of what once was.. This video reminds me of when I was a little kid in Galesburg IL in the early 60s. I would hang around the depot to watch the passenger trains (before Amtrak) and would be so in awe of the F7s just sitting and idling while the train 🚄 was boarding,, so powerful!!! They were definitely the most beautiful locomotives ever built...

Although a few years ago, there was a string of tank cars shoved back into the woods on the old Jersey Central, it is easily accessible with a road trackside much of the way. The NJ Transit Atlantic City line passes over and connects at the Junction.

Absolutely fascinating. Had they been here in the U.K, one of the many railway preservation groups would I'm sure have snapped them up! Having only really known EMD's F units in model form, it was extremely enlightening to see them for real including their classic and well-thought out driving cabs. Great work!

As far as the taggers, my Dad had a saying about some kids nowadays " Some just weren't raised right with respect, and some just weren't beat'n enough."

All these pieces of equipment were stored on the SRNJ (Southern Railroad of New Jersey). I believe the engine that had it's logos blurred out was marked for the CNJ (Central Railroad of New Jersey, long-defunct). A while back most of this equipment was auctioned off to museums and private collectors and taken off site.

Former Bessemer and Lake Erie railroad F7A's #727 & 728 built in Feb.-1953. These locomotive last operated in 2000.

Thats Winslow Junction of the Southern Railroad of New Jersey. A very active line with a storage area. Many pieces are owned by someone else waiting for the finances for restoration. Some pieces in the video have been moved to new homes.

I love EMD locomotives especially first generation ones. As an engineer for CSX formerly Conrail I have had the opportunity to run many different series of EMD and GE locomotives and I'm here to tell you an EMD SD40 is one of the best locomotives ever built, they will pull till they just cant pull any more, they are always a pleasure to run and GP38's and GP40's won't let you down either. As for GE the best I ever ran were the old B23-7's if you got a good one it would pull hard for you, as far as the B36, B40 series of locomotives I would not give you a plug nickel for one, to me they are a total let down of a locomotive. As for GE road locomotives, they are bulky and cumbersome and a pain in the ass to run at low speed to make a nice smooth hitch, they just don't have the smoothness of an EMD, and to be fair newer EMD road locomotives are very similar in the way they run, they should have kept computer control out of it, a good Engineer such as myself :) is totally capable of starting a train smoothly.

I couldn't agree more! As a lifelong fan of the New Haven RR, what I hear and see of those 50's and 60's generation locomotives, they were tough as hell and nice to operate. Although my favorite is an Alco RS3, the Geeps were cool and the P&W bought a fleet of B23-7s when I retired from Tilcon, hauling our stone all over hell and creation but for sound, i liked the cadence of the 2 cycle Fl9s as opposed to the blowhard Alcos!

When i was a kid, 6 or7 years old, to see the inside of the cab where the Enginer sits, was like a thrill never forgotten! steam or diseal, it was like someone showed you the inside of a U F O! AN Enginer let me sit in the seat one time, and i was happest kid on earth!

While I am more of an aviation buff, I have a soft spot for trains as well. Frankly, I had always thought that EMD's F Units were among the best-looking diesel's out there. Sadly, by the time that I began to appreciate trains, rail travel in the US was, for the most part, a thing of the past, well, save for Amtrak. Your disclaimer is spot on, exploring abandoned property without permission is asking for trouble and not only from authorities. Gangs and other sketchy individuals tend to adopt these trains, old buildings, etc.... as their own property and are more than willing to protect what they perceive as their turf.

I'm nearing retirement working at GE Erie. I watch locomotives fly every day! (via crane lift). Sadly, domestic locos aren't built in Erie anymore, only international.

Loved this video, my Dad was an Engineer for the P&LE Railroad which sadly was bought out by a bigger Co! He would take us to work with him and I loved to and just see how high we were up and such! Thanks brought back good memories seeing these!

That was really a great video, I got to drive a little switcher engine like the one you showed in this video at a saw mill in Alabama on a closed circuit track about 20 years ago and have been in love with old trains ever since. It's to bad the kids have to bust out the windows and tag them all up like that. It's to bad someone with some money and a big piece of property someplace can't restore those old engines and wagons But like many other great pieces of American history the are left to die in rusty silence with only the ghost of the men that use to operate and work on them to keep them company now along with the occasional tagger to deface them further with no care or respect for the important role the great machines played in the ongoing development of our still young and growing nation. It really makes me sad to see these forgotten relics of our past treated with such a low level of respect and dignity.

This is SOOOOO SADD!!!! These locomotives (and rolling stock) should be refurbished (at least to a visual standpoint) & placed in museums!!! They are part of history- how are our grandchildren & future generations going to know what these beauties were if we don't preserve them???

The Old and Weary never had any F-7s. It had FTs and F-3s. It also had NW-2s and GE 44 tonners.

It appears from the condition of the control stands in those F units that one was still usable and the other just for MU horsepower or parts. Paint can cover alot of sins. Lol. The prime movers look usable and those 645 prime movers are tough!

I've run switchers for 18yrs. In plants on the Texas coast. Got burnt out a couple of years ago. Also ran some more modern hybrids like you described.

I love history especially historical building in my hometown... and a few years ago while visiting my parents, I saw in afternoon daylight a group of teenagers spray painting ugly artwork all over private property that wasn't their's so, I turned my car around and confronted them and called the Police. Well to make a long story short... they all now have a Police records for vandalism & trespassing.

None of this equipment is abandoned. There is a shop less than 200 yards from this locomotive that is actively working to restore some of these. Likely some are just here for parts but they are NOT abandoned. It is a working railroad and I've seen them out moving local freight. And as to the "wilderness" he trekked through to get here, well, maybe he should have driven down the nice wide street that's on the other side of the engine.

Don't worry about the taggers, if anything paint will slow down the rust. Worry about vandals and scrappers! So far these seem pretty intact and complete.

The 2 F units now belong to the Reading and Northern along with the RDC you saw in the video. They are going to be restored for passenger service on the Reading & Northern from what I hear. The F units are in Tamaqua,Pa, and the RDC is in Pottsville, Pa for now till they are restored.

When I grew up in PA . Most of the Engines were steam. The passenger cars had windows you could open . When the track went around a corner the smoke would come pouring into the passenger cars . Heaven forbid someone left a window open while going through a tunnel !!

Two of the locomotives are from the long abandoned NYO&W. One is a GE 44 ton, the other is an EMD F-3. The "Old & Weary" was a very storied railroad that was totally abandoned in 1957. These are probably the last two engines of this line to exist- it is a shame to see them just rot away. I am guessing this was to be a railroad museum- but it failed.
