As a young teen in the 70s, Uriah Heep really grabbed my imagination with this song and continued to rise to greater heights with their 1972 peak iconic masterpiece albums, Demons & Wizards and The Magicians Birthday. Their fantasy filled lyrics and visceral Hard Rock really took me on many adventures.

Let's see, my dad and brother played in a band together. So the brother would be my uncle. Uriah Heep is probably his favorite band or pretty close. My dad was a big fan too. I grew up as kid listening to this music, until I got older and wanted to rebel against some of the greatest music of all time, into hip hop and rap. My dad played bass, and he really didn't sing, but he sang 2 songs, one was Uriah Heep - Stealin and the other Jethro Tull - Locomotive Breath. When it comes to that kind of music, it is hard to tell how good it is to me, because it has always been a part of me. I think it is really good, but I can remember listening to DIO in a baby car seat, probably 1 or 2 years old, in a dark room watching the red lights on the stereo while adults played cards in the other room.

Oh my I do love Heep! First band I saw live in 76. They were a ma zing. I met the drummer in a nightclub when I was 18 and recognised Lee Kerslake immediately. I said "you are Lee Kerslake"! Told him about my (and my family's) love for the band and that I'd seen them at Wembley and when. We agreed it was a blinder of a gig! Love them, love everything about them. David Byron was the best prog rock vocalist IMHO. Easy Living; Sunrise or Rain should be next. Thank you Chod; I have evil 'flu and this cheered me up no end, Happy New Year to you and fam.

I grew up in a musically talented family, my mother could play just about anything you put before her, she fashioned a harmonica holder out of a coat hanger so she could play her guitar while also playing the harmonica, she passed her love of the guitar down to my oldest brother and my big sister. My mother was born in the hills of Kentucky, she developed a love of yodeling as well. My dads' side of the family had its fair share of musicians too, so, I've been surrounded by music all my life, I even had a slight interest in the drums, but, no one to teach me, so, that was that. I remember when I was a little girl, a couple of neighbor girls and I would get together and we sang for my next door neighbor, she'd get a kick out of us,but one day the other girls weren't available and I asked her if she still wanted me to sing for her and she did, so I did, she invited me in for cookies and milk, I guess you can say I sung for a snack, ha ha! Well, that's not really why I started this, I wanted to just let you know of the other songs by Uriah Heep, you might want to look into. I don't know if you did "The Wizard", but, it's a cool one, then there's "Sunrise" and "Bird Of Prey" and "Sweet Loraine", and still much more. Thanks for playing the music that has meant so much to so many people, it's really appreciated.

Love it! If you like this song, Chod, you will love "Thunder and Lightning" by Argent (the album version, which is a bit longer). You've only reacted to their fantastic "Hold Your Head Up," and you should return to them soon. T&L is a terrific song. They also had a radio friendly hit called "Liar," which is a bop, and an odd semi-hit called "A Man For All Reasons."

Some great early Heep, David Byron was a great frontman for them, a sad end for him with booze and the excellent bass guitarist gary Thain who sadly killed himself - a great live British rock act with a touch of Purple about them but who carved out their own great reputation and following.

@@user-it1ju6br7p I do too, but put Gypsy, just above Black Sabbath as the best first song on a debut album. Overall they are 1 and 1A for me for Progressive Rock development with Zep, and Purple just below. Only my opinion, and I respect those with differing thoughts, as they are all spectacular.

Yes, but only if you have the "real" version, as in the non-American version of the album, right? To my recollection, on the US version of "Very 'eavy, very 'umble" (did they even retain the title?), that very song was replaced by "Bird of prey", a song that to the rest of us belong on the second album "Salisbury".

All the songs sound alike , Like the singer is a 3 ring circus announcer. the songs are pretty much all the same too, Mystical and spiritual and a sense of whimsical and fantasy , reminds me of the guys who role-play in the woods with helmets and swords . kinda lame really.
