Originally, I wasn't going to make this video, but after watching some more episodes of the show, it became apparent that I needed to make another video talking about how drastically my opinion on these two shows have changed.

Yeah, old one was a show that put Mamoru Oshii in people's view, and inspired a ton of people with its animation, and the new one is a nostalgia fueled cashgrab, they both have their merits.

@e1622zelda I mean, maybe it's good, I'm not arguing that. But it's not directed by Mamoru Oshii, and isn't that stylistically varied, interesting or daring, its a straight forward manga adaptation, as far as I know, and og show was much more than that. I think the new one just won't stand the test of time, like the old one did, because of how daring it was. The first 10 or so episodes of the og are pretty bad though, and then when Oshii left it also became less interesting.

After jumping back on forth between the old and new one that is only correct answer. In the old one everything is exaggerated or you can say that the new one is more watered down. But tbh I find myself spacing out while watching the old one. There is so much going on that it makes me numb. The new one is an easier watch and not to mention the new artstyle is gorgeous.

@@etheri0n959 I figured as much. But when anime ends up getting a remake in Japan, unlike here in the west where they tend to stray even further from the source material, in Japan they tend to skew closer to it. But at any rate, Urusei Yatsura already has a huge cast so I don't miss the anime only characters with the mostly uninspired names.

@@etheri0n959 I agree 100%. People have that same argument with Sailor Moon Crystal “but it’s closer to the manga!” But the barebones manga is absolute horseshit with no character development and the 90s anime version with filler episodes actually gave nuance to the characters. 😂 sometimes purists can be very annoying. It’s called an “adaption” for a reason. Even Harry Potter differs from the book. Like come on

It's worth noting that, in the 80s Urusei Yatsura, the general level of misanthropy does ebb over time, something that's most noticeable in Shinobu's character. However, the staff of that show continually push boundaries further and further. The comedic timing is continually spot on, with an intensifying energy in many episodes matching Regular Show; the animation is often impressive even to this day, such as with Lum's skating tricks or the first-person chase sequences; and the tone of the show gets more and more varied, with some episodes dropping the comedy almost entirely in lieu of stuff that's sentimental, or action-packed, or unsettling. Really grunge themes start to emerge of, like, societal dissatisfaction, and the irreplaceable yet fleeting nature of youth, and the perils of chasing impossible dreams. Heck, the fourth movie is pretty much an art film, inviting the audience to an uncomfortable position of acknowledging how the show evolved over time and, while Tomobiki will always be in our hearts, our time in it as viewers must one day end -- like youth, trying to make it go on forever will lead to self-destruction. Really avant-garde stuff, and you can consistently see the staff's passion and skill shining through the entire UY production. (Incidentally, though I am not as huge of a fan of it, I also think their more grounded and mature follow-up in Maison Ikkoku is also impeccably directed). I don't want to knock David Production's work on the remake as terrible, as it's clear their putting in a solid effort, and the colors and character designs are all quite quality. That being said, I do get the sense that they're on autopilot, reusing many of their tricks for Jojo that just don't translate to UY's style of storytelling. There's an over-reliance on on-screen onomatopoeia and moments of high-intensity color shifts, but while in Jojo that helps in giving form and intensity to the characters' inner machinations and their stands' more abstract powers, here it just feels kind of weak. As though it's a substitute for the strong composition and timing of the original, or a manifestation of a pressure to "stick closer to the original manga" taken too literally. There's also a sense that somebody misunderstood why people screamed a bunch in the original show. The characters got loud often in the original as well, but there was more buildup to those moments. And when they screamed, they freaking SCREAMED; it was as though they had an entirely different voice for when they were mad, Ran especially so! DavidPro were kind of given an impossible task when asked to re-adapt UY; the original, for a variety of reasons, was lighting-in-a-bottle, and trying to reinterpret the manga again when the first adaptation was such a landmark would inevitably yield tough comparisons. That being said, I think if this were given to a different team or if the direction was stronger, there could have been something that either recaptured the spirit of the original or was different but stood out in it's own right.

I kinda prefer the new one, normally i'm for the older versions of things because the new one tends to screw something up or the director does something drastic. But honestly I like the new one more because it's more concentrated on it's comedy then the older version which it's comedy is SO CHAOTIC especially in the sound mixing and editing. Yes everyone in the newer version isn't as backstabby in the original but it's more subtle this time. Everyone is still motivated by shallow self interest but it's not as out loud and more conniving to me which i can appreciate more.

The reboot is fantastic but yeah the original is a little bit better by 1%. I am not nostalgic for Urusei Yatsura. I am watching both for the first time at the same time. *Reboot* Pro: Introduces the characters faster, has a better art style, has awesome theme songs and it's basically the same story Con: They censor the violence a bit more. They have more freeze frames. *Original:* Pro: It's a little bit funnier and we get more Ten. He is one of my favorite characters. The episodes are longer after the first 20 so they have time to put in more jokes. *Con:* The art style shows it's age but it still looks good. It also takes forever to introduce the characters. Ruyoko is one of my favorite characters and she shows up sooner in the reboot.

I just appreciate the 2022 anime got me in to this franchise to begin with. I can't really comment on the differences from the original since I've never seen it. -but I'm inclined to agree that there was more narrative substance going on in that Christmas episode. However without that context I still found the remake to be just as emotionally resonant and I can tell there has been a lot of care put in to the new adaptation. There was always going to be changes bringing it in to a new era and landscape of anime. I think it might be more of a case of both having their pros and cons. It's just a matter of personal preference really...

The new show is more true to the Manga. But the old one had Mamorou Oshi taking lots of creative liberties to turn the ideas from the manga into more of a show. They're both great to have though. I wouldn't say the new version is "redundant". I think if you want a show that's more literal to Rumiko Takahashi's work, then you'll prefer the new anime. But if you want something that is more dramatic and artsy, then the old one is absolutely better, especially in it's first two seasons.

This reminds me of Stephen King thinking the Shining wasn't good cuz it didn't tell the story he wanted. Then he made his own production company and showed us what his vision was and... they sucked. @ToadySP
@ToadySP 9 ай бұрын
@@Acesahn I will say, after watching every episode of the original and the first four movies? (still need to watch the OVA and final two films). I will say there's part of me that gets Rumiko's frustrations though. Like if you're Rumiko, and this is your property, and you don't have the foresight to know you'll go on to also get huge success with Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha, you'd want that Urusei Yatsura train to last as long as possible. So I understand why she was frustrated when Oshi really insisted on moving things forward in Season 2. And ESPECIALLY in Movie 2's ending. As much as I really liked Movie 2, I can see why she hated it at the time. Where I think Oshi's direction was at it's best was his slow pacing of introducing characters between Seasons 1 and 2, his creation of Megane, bringing Ten in early but then quickly relegating him to be more of an occasional side character but keeping him established, and generally knowing when to "kick it up a notch" and give the animators some opportunities to really express themselves and show off their skills. That final point being the one thing that I think Oshi's replacement, Yamazaki, still did well in Seasons 3 and 4. Really I feel like Beautiful Dreamer (movie 2) had a great point that the worst fate for the series was to become "Simpsons'd" and just be an infinite loop where no progress is ever made. And I think the sheer burnout of the anime team in Season 4 (and especially in Movie 4) was really, really showing. I think there's an alternate reality where the 80s run of Urusei Yatsura never stopped, and it just became "Simpsons'd" and became another Dragon Ball or One Piece kind of property where it just keeps going forever? But there's a lot of factors in our reality for why that didn't happen, and really I think it was fated for the better this way. And really, after reading quite a bit of the manga. As much as I agree that I prefer the 80s version, I think that the 2022 version is important. I think it gives a frustrated Rumiko some deserved closure. Like there's a feeling as a fan, going and watching the jaded and cynical production that Movie 4 was, and seeing the original animators at the darkest depths of their artistic burnout and Yamazaki's bitter contempt for the hardcore fans. Going from that into watching something like the 2022 anime is a refreshing feeling of "Hey remember when this was all this series was?" It feels like a much lighter and simple series. And you know that even with great success it's not going to last forever, so it's almost just a simple treat for the fans at this point. In a way I think it oddly brings some necessary closure to an IP that has a very strange and complicated history.

the original urusei yatsura manga is really great. it was written by one of the all-time greats rumiko takahashi whose resume speaks for itself. but the thing is while the urusei yatsura manga is fantastic, the 1980s anime adaptation is a masterpiece. and i know that as a fan boy that probably doesnt mean much coming from me, but if you just look at the staff. the og director for the first half of the series was mamoru oshii, THE mamoru oshii of patlabor and ghost in the shell fame. it had the voice talents of toshio furukawa and shigeru chiiba, people who are industry legends now but who were still just rising up back then. fumi hirano just IS lum to me. and those first early episodes of the original are the ROUGH episodes, the series only improves with its run time. and thats kind of the problem with the new adaptation. the original anime is one of those rare productions that improves upon the original in almost every way, but the new version is kind of just an adaptation. its a solid adaptation, 90% of manga would only be so lucky to get an adaption like this especially something as old as urusei yatsura, but i cant say i prefer it over the source material and i definitely cant say i prefer it over the 1980s anime.

Well I agree that Megane's gang weren't so enthusiastic and crazy as the OG adaptation I really missed the crazy obssesion of Megane with Lum, specially cause Shigeru Chiba performance as Megane was top notch (well at least he was recasted as Ryunossuke's dad, which is a great role for him anyway) Well about Onsen mark which is the name of the teacher that appears in the new adaptation, is actually in the original UY anime, he's the teacher of Ataru's class mostly in the series, yeah there are 3 teachers before him, (like the one you mentioned) but they aren't as relevant as Onsen mark in my opinion, so sticking with Onsen mark from beginning to end isn't a bad choice for me, and about the christmas episode yeah I think it has some lack of detail, like atmosphere and thematic, but I don't think the episode wouldn't work as well with the relationship of Lum and Ataru, in both the original version and the new one Lum saves Ataru of being humillated, so in both cases the point and the consequences are the same, but yeah in that regard the original version showed the events of this episode much better. Personally I think the new adaptation is good and funny, but the original has the charm of the 80's, cause UY is a Lovecom from the 1978 to the 80's and remaking a lovecom from the 80's is really hard nowadays, cause there's a lot of details and characterization that won't trascend as well as the original version, for example Ataru's personallity, some jokes would have to be turn down a little and that is not an easy task at all, in the end I think both adaptations are very good, and the new one it was very successful too. I think it isn't about which one is better or not, I think the focus should be if the new UY show works well in this era or not, and I think it does pretty good, they modernized the show pretty well, the original always gonna have more details and charm cause is an 80's anime, but this new adaptation brought very well the humor of UY to this era, well I think that if it would be necessary to make a more fair comparison we should wait until the new adaptation finishes.

The old series is better for other reasons too. For one thing, the art & animation are better, the colours are more vibrant & alive, even the backgrounds are rendered in lush, beautiful watercolours & acrylics (I wish I could frame them & hang them on my walls), and the layout has more depth, almost a 3d cinematic feel to it (which explains why the series & characters adapted so well to feature films & OVAs.) The character animation was also better on the original; much more vibrant, dynamic, lively and expressive; even the facial expressions were so on-point that you almost knew what the characters were thinking before they spoke, and the comic-exaggerations (when & where appropriate) were so wild and side-splittingly funny. The new version however has none of these qualities. The colours are flat & washed out & lifeless, the animation is stiff and (again) lifeless, the characters' faces are devoid of much if any expression, everything looks flat, stiff & repetitive, as though it were rendered with a set of rubber-stamps. I don't know if they were trying to cut costs or if modern artists just plain don't know how to animate like they used to back in the 1980s, or if they farmed it out to some 3rd rate studio in some other country to do the animation grunt-work or what, but the new series is, on several levels, just plain *_dull_* in comparison to the original '80s series. It's dull, flat, washed-out & bland. And they try to compensate for this by pushing everything along as such a hectic, frantic, breakneck pace that you barely have a chance to catch your breath or even have time to fully let the jokes & gags register. Lastly, although the voices of the 2 main characters are good, they still lack a good portion of charm & appeal of the original voice-actors, and the voices of the supporting characters aren't even close; some are _way_ off, in fact. I mean, admittedly, the new version has _some_ good qualities: it follows the original manga-stories more closely than the old series did, but still, that all comes at a tremendous cost in terms of the other trade-offs listed above.

As an Urusei Yatsura scholar I disagree heavily with this video, I see where you're coming from but personally I found a lot of the characters in the 70s version way too cartoonishly one note and the story itself got lost in the majority of it's episodes being filler. This did lead to some great anime original episodes but I am very happy with this updated, more accurate interpretation of the manga that still keeps the heart of the series

Hi, wanted to say thanks, finally a video that isn't on the delusional side of things that new is better because of new animation, closer to the manga, or whatever BS comes up. What's worse, every argument used goes like this: -the "old" anime looks dated (especially the first season). Well, when asked what was definitely better at the same time frame (1981), they can't answer. -the "old" anime had a lot of filler, this (the new one) is closer to the manga. As if being a copy and paste of the manga was a guarantee of a good anime, and when you point out to these guys the very low rate of filler (less than 1 episode in 5) compared to other Japanese series like say, Detective Conan, Naruto, they resort to diversion tactics such as implying the level of discussion is lower than ever (sigh...) -they don't have the time to watch 100 episodes of the classic anime but they do for things like Detective Conan (1000+ episodes half of which are fillers), Naruto, and so forth... -The reboot has a better artsyle (?)... Well it's 2020s artsyle so is that really an argument in its favor? (especially considering that this artsyle isn't all close to the manga which is from 1978 remember?). To be clear: No I don't think so. If I sound harsh, that's because I feel that the justifications often used to preferring the new one are all missing the point. Anyway, enough ranting, I could go on and on. To say, I am in agreement with all of the points you set out, I've also outlined this in some forums to be downvoted because I wasn't going with the flow, you just outlined everything that is wrong with this adaptation, the pacing is so rushed it renders the characters annoying, the jokes just are flat since they cut things here and there, the general atmosphere to me is 2020s, not at all 1980s, as evidence by how much toning down has been done to the characters, so much so that I feel it is Urusei Yatsura Lite... Did we really need that? The classic show is a masterpiece of creativity, and it generally did improve upon the manga, while this thing can't even acurately be a copy of the manga it claims to be. I have often wondered what was the purpose of this reboot, but then, I remembered the Japanese practice of using anime series to drive sales of merchandise and that struck me as logical in that context. To finish, I have (rather forcefully at times) watched all 23 episodes, and they still leave a plastic feel in my taste compared to the original. So unlike most bloggers and fanbase, I don't want any Ranma or Maison Ikkoku remake. It is better at times to leave classics in the past.

Hi, person who has actually been around when the original was airing. Honestly, I feel the recreation does lack the mean spirit of the original, but it's frankly for the better. The original also took a lot of liberties which yes, they were good, but an adaptation could never inherit a lot of them because it would just not work in modern times. Honestly I'm glad the adaptation exist. Urusei Yatsura is such old anime that is difficult to fully present to new audencies, and this has definitely sparked a lot of interest back in a very good franchise sometimes shadowed by his more famous cousins.

OG had better comedic timing, better pacing (characters were given longer and proper introduction thus jokes just hit better) not to mention that voice acting was superb. In new one almost every single character with expressive temperament (maybe except Lum and Ataru) were butchered and made sound generic. Ram is probably the biggest downgrade: in OG her V/A would goes from calm, quiet, sweet and tender to serious, loud, furious and scary back and forth. Sometimes it's leading to situations were she spits crazy threats with her girly, cute voice or tries to keep peace while her voice is almost going off. In remake it's all gone - she sounds like a normal, typical girl and when she goes mad she just sounds like a mad teenager. In og? Sweet idiot transforming into maniacal psycho xD

I realized what you did in the first episode. The scene where Shinobu promises to marry Ataru if he succeeds in saving earth was all I needed to see. In the original Ataru is acting ULTRA dramatic as if trying to manipulate Shinobu's emotions with a "And tomorrow we may all die" speech only for Shinobu to agree with his self deprecations that his horniness is the cause for all of this which shoots his plan right in the foot lol. In the new one nothing like this happens, they couldn't recreate it.

Personally I enjoy the new anime a lot, but yeah it’s very much not directed by mamoru oshii. Though aside from the jokes pointed out here I think most of them are fairly similar in terms of how they hit much more often than not. I’m not really that broken up about the stakes in the kumino otoko episode because in both versions it just reads as varying degrees of petty high school bullshit and it’s not like Ataru hasn’t already been publicly humiliated worse before already, but I will also admit that the joke of the sheer lengths the stormtroopers go to are very funny. On the subject, I don’t really have strong feelings about the stormtroopers themselves or really how nasty the cast as a whole is. They were sufficiently dysfunctional for me in the modern one, and the ways in which it was mitigated didn’t really bother me enough. I also think that Lum is rather conniving in all versions. Not overly so, she’s by far the most emotionally honest person in the cast, but there was never really a difference as far as I could tell. I also like the coloring and style choices for character designs more, especially for the alien characters, and the more conventional style also helps characters like Ran, who’s meant to look as cute as can be. It doesn’t help everyone, mendou looks a bit worse, but overall I think the more realistic proportions makes the violence ironically more visceral. One of the things I love about Ranma 1/2 is that even though her drawings aren’t super detailed, Takahashi has an impeccable sense of physical comedy and posing and this new one really gets to that. And lastly, I’m not super big on how slow the older show can be at times. Not that it doesn’t use its time to just spin its wheels, but I often felt that the new one was more efficient without losing too much in return. Even when jokes are done in more conventional ways in the new one, they’re still done effectively. I can take a few dramatic scenes being cut because the dramatic side of the relationships are always more an undercurrent to their comedic side in takahashi’s work. Like you outlined, some of the comedy doesn’t work as well, but what does work well combined with the style choices that I do think have a genuine leg on the original ultimately make the new show a personal favorite for me. I say this as a guy who ranks beautiful dreamer on his top 5 anime, and the new one more around his top 46.

The old show is where the fun's at. The new one isn't bad, but it's almost a lazy 1:1 adaptation of the manga if you don't count chapter order and the og anime added a lot of creativity over the manga imo. The only thing I don't like in the old show is that episode 14 shows Lum actually taking an interest in Mendo, it's short lived, but it's something that's supposed to happen BEFORE the Christmas episode (10) which is the deal sealer for Ataru and Lum.

@@etheri0n959 from the point of view of someone who likes sandwiches and hates life without the fresh air to breathe, i will criticize that the way you compared the two sounded less like a comparison and more of a tunnel vision on what the new urusei yatsura had which was bland that the old one had which was better but not the other way around, a sort of bias if you will. Me personally i like to think that these are two different realities where one is hyped up to eleven and the other is a little more realistic to what would ACTUALLY happen if aliens that looked human but with powers came to do, the main moments of the manga ARE seen in both but where one was given creativity the other was given clarity where the movements feel more human, also stop reading this in a condescending tone most people do that, also good work. None of this actually matters what i am saying above, but at least add a percentage or a rating of in-between sections to better clarify an opinion, I heard all differences between both shows and knew what you meant but never quite grasped how much it affects you personally. that is all I will now let you have the last word.

I never read your words in a condescending tone. I was just responding to a sentiment that I disagreed with. And what you said about me being biased can just as easily be applied to you. The new version is more realistic? How? It doesn't do anything to change the plot points or the story in order to make the characters more grounded or anything. It's just less creative with how it frames its jokes and punchlines. I feel like this is kind of grasping at straws to justify you liking the new version better, but if you like the new one more that's fine and you don't have to justify that. P.S. This comment seemed a lot more condescending than the first where the only real problem I had with it was the implication that you're not allowed to criticize something you don't like. NOO actually the teacher that you're talking about in the new adaptation is called Onsen-mark and no in the original version that old teacher is also replaced with Onsen-mark and he's much better of a character there too! you should've watched more to see that, Onsen-mark then stays till like the end of the series. But also I do hate how the new show starts it by Ataru running and no one knows what the hell is going on, but the original shows you what actually happened before you get confused. The new show shifts some characters in both how they look which depends on the dumb new artstyle, but we gotta cope with it anyways then :\, and it shifts their characteristics like in the original version Lum's father is shown as a man with high loyalty and place and is a nice simple person with new people while the new show shows all of that except they show him as an evil invader instead, you can literally see that in the first episode and you'll get what I mean. I also HATE how they changed the 4 friends of Ataru's, well just like what they say, every masterpiece DOES have a cheap copy. But honestly, I am grateful that they at least thought of the show and made a reboot for it last year, it could have gone worse not gonna lie, I just hope they don't frick anything up anyway.

The narration was too slow to not say sluggish regarding the original material (short humorous manga stories). I also always disliked the added anime schoolmates characters which didn't bring anything really interesting. Sasuke in the Ranma 1/2 anime was such a better addition in comparison. In the 80s' anime, the voice acting was often literally annoying and gosh, I have watched a lot of Hokuto no ken episodes. In comparison, Urusei Yatsura was close to torture to my ears.
