An underappreciated aspect about Uryuu vs Jugram is that Jugram doesn't comprehend why Uryuu would betray Yhwach. He expect Uryuu to abandon his friends just like he abandoned Bazz-B in his flashback. Jugram view is that relationships that don't benefit you personally are pointless. (which is why he abandoned Bazz-B, Yhwach provided him power and a sense of belonging) When Uryuu says he's doing it because they're his friends and nothing else, Jugram is angered because he regrets abandoning and later killing Bazz-B. This is proven because he still holds onto the sticker Bazz-B gave him when they were kids. It's quite interesting.

Watching Bleach analysis always makes me like Bleach even more. Bleach has its cons but the pros of the story outweigh them by far.

Prolog for Ichigo Soul society arc for Rukia Arrancar arc for Orihime Full bring for Chad Thousand year blood war arc for Uryuu

Uryu was a character that had his high and lows, he had big focus in the first arc, then its consistent in the Soul Society arc, Arrancar arc and Fullbring feels like he wavers, whether it being injured or getting bodied by the enemy, the TYBW arc did redeem Uryu for me and reminded me why when I first saw Bleach, I thought he was like Ichigo's rival and what I liked about his character. He is certainly a fascinating character.

The Antithesis is actually very broken. But The Balance is simply a hard counter to it.

Just love the way Kubo connected the arcs of Uryu and Mayuri through the theme of fatherhood.

Yeah Uryu reasoning for joining Yhwach should of been done better in terms of realsm but overall I thought that the TYBW actually gave Uyru some gravatos with his motivations on betraying his friend

Many don't realize this but Uryu was Elite / Schutzstaffel level at the end. On the level of Pernida, Gerard, Askin and Lille. It's said he's part of them. In pecking order he's kind of weird - Elite Sternritters are still below the Sternritter Grandmaster (Haschwalt), but he's also considered the 'next king' or 'successor' to Yhwach.

I agree with basically everything you said, my only issue with his character is the execution of his development with his father’s relationship was really rushed but the idea and build up was great so wouldnt call it bad, i think if kubo in the anime makes ryuken have a fight with yhwach trying to protect uryu to the point where he is killed/almost killed would be a nice addition so uryu would realize what his father wanted to protect.

Uryu's relationship with his father is slightly touched upon in We Do Knot Always Love You.

I know Ichigo is probably next, but we definitely need Isshin and Ryuken backstories and how they both fit into Ichigo/Uryu's relationship. I, too hope in the anime that we get a resolution between Ryuken and Uryu. Because when I read the manga and got Everything But the Rain, I was waiting for Ryuken and Uryu to have their version. But after hearing how the ending was rushed, I was disappointed I didn't get it, especially since Uryu became a doctor @ the end.

Finally an analysis on Uryu's character! I've always been amazed at all the people thinking he's just the standard emo rival, a Sasuke basically (having Sasuke's voice actor in the anime didn't help)

I really wanted to see more of him in the war. We literally have an entire arc focusing on the return of his species and he barely does anything which sucks because I really like his dynamics, personality and fighting style.

Need that father son tag team against Yhwach. Also I thought it would be cool to do a throwback where Uryu tapes Zangetsu on his head again and fires the Stilsilver arrow with Ichigo

I like how the main theme with him is trusting, working with and even befriending those who would be enemies for obvious reasons. Still through it all he and Ichigo ultimately becoming the best of friends and studying together in the postwar world is a perfect closure for him.

Finally an analysis to one of my favorite Bleach Characters. Some issues i have with Kubo is when in the Hueco Mundo Arc, Mayuri is the one that saves Uryu from an Espada. I mean seriously, in the Soul Society Arc both of them almost kill each other and then Mayuri comes and save him from an Espada? I mean come on. Talk about Mayuri, why in the TYBW Arc none of the Sternritters ever mentioned about Mayuri butchering Quincys, i think that would've make things deeper. Back to Uryu, i agree with you that his relationship with Ryuken should've been more developed but thanks to the rushed ending, that wasn't entirely fulfilled. But still, i think that Uryu has a decent character growth throughout the series and it's a shame that some people recognize him as the Sasuke of Bleach even though he is not entirely. Fantastic video man, looking forward for the Ichigo Character Analysis or a Rukia suprise video XD.

Uryu is my favorite character, I wish his ending had been a little happer instead of turning into his father and being forever alone.

So Ichigo and Uryu both had basically the same method of recovery to get their powers back. Both were driven to the brink and then pierced through the chest with their respected weapons charged with energy from the remaining people in their faction.

Kubo has admitted that his editor forced him to create Ishida, specially because the manga that just started 2 years earlier was insanely popular with the rivalry they introduced. Kubo was against it earlier on, but he admits he came to like Ishida's character and just to mess with the editors decided to change his approach and make their rivalry-friendship far more ambiguous.

Bleach is such a piece of art that uses Realism in its storytelling, emphasizing all sides of issues great and the dark sides.

I always thought that the think Ryugen wanted to protect was Uryu which is why he held him back similarly how Byakuya protected Rukia by holding her back from gaining a seated officer position.

I wish we could’ve had more time with Uryuu, his father since this was a Quincy arc….

Ishida is such an underrated character. This video does a great job in highlighting his character. I wished more was done with him, but he still got loads of development throughout the story. Great video.

I love how Uryu Ishida shares qualities with Sasuke Uchiha, and how both were influenced by Vegeta IV. All three are the edgier rivals to the main character, all three belong to a bygone, morally questionable but still sympathetic group, and of course all three make their respective stories much more interesting.

I'm really excited for this video, Uryu is my favorite anime character of all time, let's see if you do my boy justice! Update after watching: as I mentioned earlier Uryu is my favorite anime character of all time, overall I thought the video was really good but, you could have included the brother sister/ possible romantic feelings between Uryu to Orihime, this is shown when he saves her from jurobo the wind scythe, and when he protected her again Mayuri, also it ties back to the Heuco Mundo arc where uryu says that he wanted to say no to her about taking her to watch ichigo fight Ulquiorra but he just couldn’t say no to her. I also I feel like there are parallels with ichigo losing his powers and Uryu possibly being the only person who can understand how he feels and it might possibly be why Uryu took it upon himself to protect Karakura Town in Ichigo’s absence. It should be noted that during the Fullbringer arc Uryu purposely didn’t let orihime heal him to protect Ichigo. Finally circling back to the Uryu and Orihime dynamic, because of all the time they spend together it was a really nice moment when she cried out of relief that Uryu was still on their side and she truly never believed he was on the The enemies side. I know I’m knit picking a little bit but, I think it’s important how the friendship he has with Orihime really balanced out his character and shows his more tender side and how he cares for the group long before he outright states it

Would you ever do a character analysis on Shinji Hirako? I think he is an interesting character with a cool Zanpakuto ability.

My only real problem with uryu are that he only really gets one really good fight in the series, the one against Mayuri. The other problem is that the Quincy don’t really feel like they have a big presence in the overall story and then suddenly they are super important in its final arc. A bigger effort should have been made towards giving Uryu and Ryuken a larger role in the overall story before the Sternritters were revealed.

Actually, when in karakura town with Ishida using the faucet example, Ichigo says he's always at full throttle, but Ishida reasons in his mind that going full throttle all the time is impossible and actually realized how much reiatsu Ichigo has to the point that Ichigo himself doesn't realize it and can't control it. It's not that Ichigo was always at full throttle, it's that even when he's not trying to bring power out he still leaks it. Meaning two things: 1) Ichigo has very little reiatsu control (something made clear lots of times in the story). 2) Ichigo's full reiatsu capacity was hard to fathom for Uryuu even early in the story.

We need some side manga’s about Ishida like for him and his father to tie in the struggles and grow to both characters. Maybe Ishida learning to go inner world like Ichigo did and having nightmares about the Quincy and their return. This would explain maybe his training non stop but his reluctance to engage in a fight? Maybe Yhawach had some control to why Ishida wasn’t interested in fully interacting. But yeah definitely need a full on Quincy can’t fear your heritage manga.

This has to be one of my favourite character analyses of Uryu. I've been looking to really get back into Bleach now that we have a whole trailer to watch for the TYBW arc, and this video was what made me grab bleach off the shelf and start picking through Uryu's character in a way that I haven't done in years. With Bleach being the first shonen that I ever watched and with Uryu becoming my favourite before he'd even finished an antagonist in the hollow bait battle - needless to say, he's a character I have a huge soft spot for, and always will. I really appreciate how you did a deep dive into his character over his powers. All in all this was a great video and I enjoyed watching! I honestly liked that Uryu lacked the physical strength of other characters, with the way Kubo wrote him, every time Uryu entered a battle, the odds of him winning were stacked against him if you end up looking at his total, and that was always more interesting to me. For how bold and proud he is, he's shown to be pretty self-sacrificial. He disregards his arms when channelling and releasing Ichigo's spiritual energy, when urahara offers him further treatment after being defeated by renji he refuses so that he can focus on treating Ichigo, even with her shield he still stood in a protective stance over orhime when mayuri blew up his squad members, he stays behind to let orihime escape against him, he sacrifices his powers to avenge his sensei, he launches himself into a battle against ulquiorra that he has no chance of winning just to buy orihime time, he refuses orihimes offer to heal him after he's attacked in the fullbring arc just in case he specifically is being targeted so he can be a safe distance from his friends while in the hospital and lastly he went into Ywach's palace with the intention of blowing it up, presumably with a very small chance of survival. He's Looking back on him, he seems to be a character who is just always out of reach of catharsis both in a narrative and meta sense. There are many things about him that had the potential to be so interesting. I wish we'd seen him struggle with the loss of his powers while also distancing himself from his friends so that they don't find out, I wish we'd seen him grapple more with agreeing to his father's terms to get his powers back. In his biggest battle against Mayuri, he ends up in this strange limbo of he didn't lose but he certainly didn't win - and later instead of ever getting any meaningful resolution, Uryu's justified hatred of Mayuri is turned into a punchline when he takes over the battle against Szayel. I'm still a little bitter that we never got to see Uryu mentally process being saved by the person that literally tortured his grandfather. Later, we never get an aftermath scene of Ichigo properly reacting to how Ulquiorra and Hollow Ichigo had injured him which always sat strange with me that Ichigo is never properly depicted showing the guilt he clearly has for turning against his own friend (even in that state). It just felt like a big moment to me that really got brushed over, that we don't get a moment of Ichigo Orhime and Uryu after that huge battle. There's no time to process it really. In the Fullbring arc he has his moment of facing Ichigo and revealing that Ginjo was the one who attacked him...only to be cut down by Tsukishima. Then as you mentioned, at the end of TYBW, there's no real dialogue between the Ishida's, it's all necessary plot exposition and we can only infer that Uryu puts two and two together about his mother - but there is only inferred resolution with Ryuuken. One moment he's witnessing the fall of Ywach, the next he's on rooftop watching a wrestling match on his phone, now a doctor in his late 20's. It does all feel incredibly rushed that we never got to see Ichigo and friends truly reunite with Uryu, post battle, as an ally. There's no reaction to the fact that Uryu intended to destroy the palace with his friends thinking he'd betrayed them and no goodbyes. Some of these are fine as they are, being narrative points that move the story forward but others do just feel like his character was given all the depth and then just swept over. But the antithesis the Ywach thing was something I'd never picked up on, I'd always tried to compare him as the antithesis to Ichigo. Shinigami vs Quincy, older brother vs only child, loving father who runs a clinic vs cold father who runs a hospital, witnessing his mothers death made Ichigo want to protect people while witnessing his senseis death made uryu feel like he had to prove himself, etc. But I love the contrast between the first quincy and the last quincy thing that was going on right in front of me and i didn't even notice! I could go on for pages about Uryu it seems but I'll stop here since this has already gotten too rambly haha 😅

Uryu is like definitely in my top ten characters that just so happen to be wearing glasses. Yes I am a fan of the glasses shining trope, but I'm just glad that Uryu has a lot more going on that would make people (who normally hate characters with glasses) a new type of perspective to him. The nuances just fit right and it makes Uryu somewhat relatable to those who do and don't wear glasses.

I’m glad they did Uryu good in the end. I always loved his character but he got overshadowed throughout the series. Good to see he finally got redemption for his mother.

I think Uryu was a disappointment in the "rival" department. Ofc he worked alongside Ichigo for the most time, but he like did that a lot in the side, and like not the "typical" rival. It seems to me like he was a sort of "protagonist" of his own anime, that happened to come sometimes in the story of another one, instead of a rival of the mc

I never put much thought to romantic relationships in shonen anime’s, but am I the only who thought Uryu was in love with Orihime? He often has monologues about her when Ichigo is in important fights. Like during the fight with Byakua he’s hoping Ichigo wins for Orihime’s sake. He similarly does this during the Ulquirora fight. It would also make sense as it would parallel the relationship the Ichigo’s dad has with his mom and Uryu’s father.

Uryu is the best. Smart, caring guy deep down, and an awesome Quincy fighter.

I don’t know how much characterization it offers, but some of the novels involve Uryu. His father paid for medical school.

I had to stop at the 33 minute mark because I got to leave some surprises for when the anime returns. Thanks for reminding me why I love Uryuu so much. In some ways, he feels less like Ichigo's rival and more like his tactical right hand on the battlefield. Also, the way he is their friend, but labels himself as the opposite gives me Justice League Batman vibes.

I think uryu father and grandfather are so knowledgeable about the quincy that they are equal to uruhara and the rest of the smart captains but choose to not be a “real quincy”and follow a code where they believe to only attack a hollow if a soul reaper died or did not help. They understand the balance of the souls is actually a job for the soul reaper and to do that would imbalance the worlds and thus be bad. They realize if a human or others die then the souls of them would be reincarnated into the cycle and then if a soul reaper failed to come and help they could do it. I also believe quincy do not go through the reincarnation cycle so the imbalance thing isn’t really a issue bc they get reborn as humans instantly orr become the power source for another quincy

Kubo loves to add layers to his characters and his story. He loves to foreshadow in the most subtle way, Uryu is a prime example of the, honestly he is suck a beautiful character and greatly developed although rushed . The way his and Ichigo's friendship developed was great and how everything was foreshadowed very early on was masterful. Thank you Imran, I loved the video well done. Uryu, had a lot of potential as a character. I'm glad he got more involved in the thousand blood war arc but before that, he didn't get much attention and was often just in the background or supporting Ichigo. I am VERY disappointed in the ending he got though and it's the same with other characters.

If They made the excuse to have him give her it back in any form then I'm sure she would reach that latent potential.

as for the arrowhead, I think that the best way to retcon it would be to change it ability from just being effective against ybach like it is now. its ability would instead be to "freeze" the spirit energy of the any target, since every ability is powered by spirit energy than by freezing it would leave the target powerless. since all of their powers and abilities would have no fuel to activate them or maintain them. this I think would answer the question of how Ryouken knew about the abilities of the arrowhead and the metal it is made of since the Quincy in the past would have had a reason to make them. and to use it aginst stronger hollows and shinigami. also, make it explicit that every Quincy that loses there powers would create this special silver and just not the victims of the Quincy king.

I love how Kubo leaves visual hints for certain characters. Like for instance in Volume 1, Hirako is in the character panel with the Ichigo and the others but we don't see him till the 21st volume 🤣
