I'm from Ark City, so I loved this. Lots of places I've never heard of or didn't realize were so small.

Us166 was a amazing. Old buildings especially one with sunflowers used to identify the town , was neat. So many old building, brick factory, churches , waterfalls ,what a variety to choose for a adventure.

This is even better than Part 1. I really enjoyed the great small towns. There are so many wonderful old buildings. I'm a Michigander and was interested in South Haven. I never heard of the town in Kansas or that it was named for a Michigan town. Great video. Thanks for the trip. I love the old 166.

You should have driven a couple of miles North to Dexter and visited Henry's Candy. A small family owned and run candy factory that I think has been in business for close to 100 years. Don't know if you are familiar with the Oh Henry candy bar but this is where it originated. Born and raised in Ark City and my paternal grandparents lived in Cedar Vale for a few years before starting a business in Ark City.

We've visited some of the towns along 166, nice areas to visit. The old Peru brick plant supplied a lot of the brick for the roads. Brick plants usually included the name/place the bricks were made so if you walk along the brick roads you will see the markings where/ who made them. Brick roads last longer, the water drains better on them and it's said brick roads promote driving slower on them thus making them safer. This is one reason folks collect bricks with the markings. I have a few. Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado has the red dirt/clay that does well for making brick and tile. I used to work for Laufen ceramic tile on 66th st. in Tulsa. They made their tile products from this red dirt. Laufen tile was among the strongest tile in the industry. Sadly the company was bought and moved to Mexico. We'll have to visit Butcher Falls- we thought it was private property. As always another great video dear. Always love the drone shots. Stay safe and GOD bless

Great video! I've traveled the length of 166 and you showed places I've not seen! Thank you!! I need to do it again and get off the hwy more often! I am always stunned by the beautiful details in the architecture of the big brick churches in small towns. Most of them are at least 100 years old.....a feat to have built in that time! Enjoyed the video. Grandparents and mom buried there in Niotaze. Old farm just north 3 miles (Rinck). Peru use to be a cool looking town in the 60s. The main building you showed was a grocery store own by one my relatives, Pud Palmer. The white church you showed there as a school union each year there still. Sad to see it all crumbling. Request: When you visit cemeteries, zoom in on some of the headstones and leave it for a second or two longer so we can read it, please. Lots of interesting old buildings along the 166. It was a great trip.

Arkansas City does have some beautiful buildings and roads. I will have to go through there next time I am in the area. It would be interesting to know how many small towns in the US would not exist were they not a railroad stop back when rail was king.

So many cut stone buildings. many an early town learned the hard way with old wooden building and town fires. To sum it up Peru was just another brick and then those falls. Interesting places John.

Chico and I stopped at Butcher Falls in November 2014, I can assure you it wasn't shorts weather! (I reviewed my vlog to verify my oatmeal memory) I've noticed that when the post office closes, it seems to be the death knell for a town. My Cedar Vale footage was lost, I regret not doing a better job of it. When there in 2014, the PD had two new Chargers for patrol, which I found interesting. We enjoyed the number of old, cool buildings in Ark City. When my brother took a position with Dodge City PD, he discovered the adventure of driving on icy brick. On my first visit to rural Kansas is when I saw brick paved streets. As always...

You missed one of the best places on 166. Just west of Ark city, around 6 or 7 miles. Is M.A.D. Mid America Dragway. It started as an air strip in WW2. They still race there today.

Gee, what an fun trip along rt 166. Arkansas City was very interesting as I had never heard of it before, actually a lot of the towns along the way I've never heard of before. It's nice to see places like those you showed, sure makes me wish I could go to visit them but traveling along with you was fun. I think one of the reasons they don't advertise about rt 166 is to keep their towns quiet and peaceful without a lot of tourists. Thank you for the trip. Happy trails to you and God bless.

Great continuation video!!! Been on US HWY 166 between Arkansas City and that big rock you had shown in the Cedar Vale, KS, area. Anything further east really does not jog the memory banks. Afterwards I usually turn north on another route that I cannot remember at this time or go back to Arkansas City and re-acquire US HWY 77 and go north. Supposedly there is a cemetery just a few miles north of that big rock that is "haunted" - cannot remember the name of that cemetery Read it in a "haunted" Kansas guidebook once. Visited it but never "experienced" or noticed anything. I have a few friends that live in the Cedar Vale/Arkansas City area - just may need to plan a trip and go visit them in the future!! Also, being from Ohio, I pronounce Arkansas City the "proper" way, which drives my friends nuts!! That must be a regional thing the way of the pronouncement for that is basically from the Great Bend, KS, area following the river through Wichita and down to the OK/KS border below Arkansas City. Living 30+ years in Kansas and that is the only place I hear that pronunciation - hey, whatever you want, your town!! West of Great Bend and into Colorado and south of the Ponca City, OK, areas ARKANSAS is pronounced what would be considered "normally". My friends also say that Arkansas City is pronounced OUR-KANSAS City. Do remember them telling me about a newscaster once upon a time in the Wichita, KS, area who could not figure out how to say OUR-KANSAS City or what the fuss was all about, and the residents would write to the news station or call in and complain. Eventually ARK CITY was settled on.

That sandstone looks like a petrified car sticking out of the ground, among other things (it reminded me of all of those multi-painted Cadillacs sticking out the ground in California. It also looks like a petrified head of a dinosaur. It was really nice riding with you today. I should have brought my knitting in and have done it while I was watching, because that's what I usually do when I go on long car rides with my daughter. Well, they are usually not at long as yours - maybe 6 hours at the most. It's a 6 hour drive from Las Cruces to Scottsdale. All those red roads made of in Arkansas City, must be really hard to drive on. They just have a few roads in Tacoma, WA where I used live and I HATED driving on those, especially going up hill and in the rain. And did you go through there on a Sunday because there was basically no one driving in the downtown area and the drone shot.

Just FYI, hwy 81 pretty much follows the route of the Chisholm trail.

Well ya bypassed my town of Havana, but that's ok. This is part of my world, so it was cool to see some attention paid to it. thanks.

I grew up in Ark City and went to college out in Pittsburg so I’m very familiar with this drive. In fact when I was at college they were just starting to build the highway to bypass the city of Sedan. I wish that you would’ve taken the drive up into that town as it is unique as well.

Very enjoyable video. I was in Ark City a week ago today & standing in the exact same spot at the waterfall at Cowley Fishing Lake 10 days ago. Very pleasant area. I had always wondered about that big rock / gemstone along the road so now I know how it got there. There are a lot of brick streets in Winfield too. FYI on the cemeteries, there’s an app Find A Grave that can give you some information on the graves found there in. I use it a lot for genealogy but it also has additional information that might help you in your travels.

Interesting towns along the way. Odd how 166 ends there, but there other roads heading out to the western half of Kansas. Definitely some interesting roads for a motorcycle.

You missed a good one at Geuda Springs NW of Ark City, a town that had some outlaw ties!

You passed over a lot of improved segments. Rt 66 was replaced, but Rt166 is still a very useful hiway.

I was just traveling that route on Wednesday! I have family on both sides buried at cemeteries along that route or nearby---the Moore Prairie Cemetery where my great-grandfather's first wife and infant daughter are buried (In fact, you were probably just a few feet away from their graves because they are just near the gate!) also, the Dexter Cemetery is just off 166 on 15 where some folks on my mother's side were buried!

It must be really cool to drive through these little towns. I've always wondered (and I know they have the technology for it) if there is an app so that you can virtually visit wherever you want to go as if you are driving through) I know there are Google Streets, but you must keep clicking to move through a place. What I want is an app where you can move your mouse on a computer or your finger on a phone and it will present the scenery as the Google car was driving and picked up. I don't know if I am communicating that correctly. But I want to be able to virtually drive with my finger or mouse on a small little map at the bottom right or left of my screen and have the panoramic view appear on the screen and you can right click or left click to see at either side and if there are points of interest along the way, like a museum, historic place, etc have a hyperlink to a video taken inside the place so you can virtually visit it. Anyway, I have mentioned my idea to family members who have the smarts and the capability to make such an app, but they think it is dumb. So, if you know of such an app, if Google Streets already has a way of doing that, please tell me about it. If there is no app like that, here's my idea, you can have it. I also mentioned to same members more than 10 years ago to make an app where it rewards you for your steps by moving you through various historical or tourist places and giving you an award at the end of the trip, while noting all the historical places on the way. Again I was told it was dumb, and my brother missed out on making an app such as Conquer. He could be making the big bucks, because back when I thought of it, there was no such app and that app is EXACTLY what I was asking my brother and son to do. Ya snooze, ya lose.

We traveled 166 when we went to visit my wife's relatives in Pueblo Colo. followed 166 then followed 160 all the way west. In western Kansas & eastern Colorado there ain't much but people actually live there. Kind of like the Oklahoma panhandle. Decent roads most of the time. Kansas does better on their roads than Oklahoma.

These towns were all on the rail line the Missouri Pacific built on the survey of the afforementioned, Denver Memphis and Atlantic. A railroad never built. Partly financed by Confederate Gen.Nathan Bedford Forrest. He lost his personal fortune on that gamble.
