The first new treatment for Alzheimer's disease for nearly 20 years has been approved by regulators in the United States, paving the way for its use in the UK.
Aducanumab targets the underlying cause of Alzheimer's, the most common form of dementia, rather than its symptoms.
Charities have welcomed the news of a new therapy for the condition.
But scientists are divided over its potential impact because of uncertainty over the trial results.

Even if the Alzheimers drug reduces lifespan I would still have it. Id much rather live 10 years less than live those 10 years not being able to remember or do anything.

I agree. I have multiple sclerosis (I am on a DMT to slow it down), but there are certain drugs I need sometimes to help with symptoms. For example, diazepam for muscle spasms. Doctors are so hesitant to prescribe that kinda thing because of risk of addiction, but what’s the point living a longer life if it’s miserable and you’re in pain 🤦🏼‍♀️ x

Yep I still get chills down my spine whenever I think back to when my grandfather battled and died from it. One episode that sticks in my mind is when he poured piping hot coffee in a glass and severely burned his hand when he grabbed it which caused him to drop the glass which then spilled the coffee all over himself. He ended up with second degree burns on his chest stomach and groin. Immediately after that happened he forgot what happened and became distressed about why he was in so much pain and caused him to go into a mental breakdown. That whole thing wasn’t even one of the really bad episodes it sticks in my mind because I saw it happen and that’s when I realized the gravity of the disease. I was fairly young and didn’t know much about the disease at the time.

@@legobrickabrac I haven’t seen it. I don’t think I could watch it bc it hits too close to home. Alzheimer’s is the disease everyone in my family seems to get. I’ve been screened by my doctor and I’m likely to get it too eventually. Hopefully something else takes me before then bc I don’t want to suffer.

Even if we don't know if it makes more harm than good? I had relatives that died in Alzheimers if something that acually helps exists it would be huge. There is also other trials that is interesting going on like testing if herpes virus is at least sometimes a cause for Alzheimers and we have medecin that can stop herpes.

@@lubricustheslippery5028 The thing is this is medication for mostly older people who are around 65 to 75 plus years which I think it is worth the risk to take the drug even if there was some kind of massive side affect in 8 to 10 years. Life expectancy for Men is 75 anyway.

If it helps then let people decide if they want to take it, Alzheimer’s is a terminal illness anyway, having something that can somehow arrest its progress is a big step forward.

Overwhelmingly, patents are just not in a position to determine weather a drug is right for them. It is real tempting to pull out the personal freedom guns on this kinda thing, but it is not about that. It is no doubt deeply costly and patience may take it unnecessarily. If it does not work, it should not be sold.

I wasn’t very impressed with the explanation about why they changed their minds about the effectiveness of the drug. It didn’t inspire much confidence. However, I agree with your comment that if it helps, let people decide. Even if it’s only marginally effective, that can make a big difference for people. Nothing was mentioned about the safety profile for the drug, but there are plenty of drugs on the market with significant side effects that people willingly take anyway because their values as a patient are that the benefits outweigh the risk. The first doctor only cited that the original interpretation of the data was not sufficient, but he didn’t have a good argument for the new interpretation. Research results are very much subject to the method of interpretation and statistical analysis even though we try to make results as unbiased as we can. Also, after FDA approval, drugs are placed in a final phase that basically consists of monitoring and data collection on a mass usage scale. With approval of the new drug, it’s availability (and the immense number of people with Alzheimer’s disease) will allow for better data about whether or not the drug is effective enough warrant it’s adverse reactions. In addition, the new access to the drug allows for more data collection and research to be available, potentially leading to new drugs that work similarly or target the same structures. It would be more difficult to predict mechanisms and adverse drug reactions for “spin-off” drugs if there wasn’t large amounts of data from real patients using the drug. There’s also something to be said about patient individuality and how that varies the effectiveness of the drug significantly due to genetic and epigenetic differences. Large sample size attempts the mitigate these differences, but the reality is that dugs will work great for some people and not great for others. Patients should be allowed the autonomy to decide if they want to try the drug or not, with the knowledge that it might not work for them

If I was diagnosed with this disease, what will I lose if I decide to try this medication? Honestly, my answer will be ‘nothing’. This is hope for many who are afflicted. Whether it slows down the progression for just another year, then so be it.

Proper statistics is only possible with randomized trails with controlls. If the effect is huge it's apparent without it if the effect is small real science is needed.

I disagree, because there is a financial incentive. If the drug doesn't work or worse yet is harmful, we will never know because the company that made the drug will cover up evidence to the contrary. Happens all the time.

Neurodegenerative diseases like alzeimers and dementia are heartbreakingly cruel. My grandmother has dementia and seeing first hand how quickly her memories faded and the last time I saw her was only 2 years, I doubt she would even know who I am. She is far beyond any treatment but I look to a day where this plague on humanity is controlled so that I need not fear for the same to happen to my mother.

wow your story is rather sad. i have heard that during the last few hours of someone's life that has dementia, they stop showing symptoms and act normally for that time, so i just want you to know that, maybe it will make you feel better.

It's shocking when governments by permitting cigarettes, are knowingly endangering our lives through 2nd & 3rd-hand smoking as well as fossil fuel emissions. Breathing toxic air is akin to drinking sewage water! Even more people die daily as a result of pollution. Where's the outrage? Where's my right to clean air? Over 20 years ago I worked with an Alzheimer patient involved in the Namenda study. Namenda gave the patient awful diarrhea, made her lethargic and unable to speak or sit up straight. After two years the drug was stopped and she was given low dose Ritalin and coffee three times a day. Her face was no longer "frozen", she once again could smile, talk and feed herself finger foods. She could hold her head up and had normal elimination. I know they spend a lot on research, and developing these drugs. I would use caution before thinking there's a new miracle drug, sometimes the side effects diminish what quality of life they have.

Perhaps what’s changed is that more of the FDA committee’s family members have been affected ... Watching my father decline and (his) struggle to accept his decline is crushing - as is losing him while he’s still physically healthy. It’s hard to appreciate until it happens to someone in ur life.

It’s a cruel disease. It’s stolen my grandfather away and I wish he would just go to sleep and not wake up instead of having to suffer everyday. He has to wear nappies (diapers) he falls often. He’s not there anymore but his body keeps him alive because he is still young. It’s like a form of torture and I really pray that he doesn’t ever have moments where he is aware of his situation. It’s absolutely heart breaking. He would never have wanted this ever. He would have ended things himself if he knew this was his future. It also takes a huge emotional toll on the family and it does become a burden, which is a horrible and hard thing to admit.

I nursed my mother with ALZ & it is crushing, but what I've been reading is to begin a Keto diet with IMF & longer fasting to push ones body into autophagy which lets the body heal itself while you're younger. Especially those who have it in families. For me, I have begun changing my diet now, trying to heal my gut, liver, etc. Dr. Perlmutter is a good source of information

But not everyone agrees that amyloid causes the disease, and there is evidence that the drug may do more harm than good, such as causing brain bleeds. Yes it reduces amyloid, but if amyloid is just a symptom, then this drug is no different than all the others that just treat symptoms.

@@noobplays-saslow2920 my main problem with it is that if it does not work and only attacks the symptoms, then data to suggest the truth will never come out because the company that developed it will have a financial stake to make sure the truth doesn't come out. I have read a lot about corruption in pharmaceutical companies, and they have been known to cover up things that work, such as Hydroxychloroquine for COVID.

The biggest argument against the drug is that even though it does reduce amyloids, they say there’s no proof reducing amyloids will reduce cognitive decline. However, that’s what trials should be for....assess risk and evaluate effectiveness. One thing is CERTAIN.... doing nothing will cause accelerated death and it’s not pretty. My dad went through it and it was horrible

I’m glad there’s been some steps forward in targeting the cause of Alzheimer’s, but I wouldn’t want anyone to come to any harm or become ill as a result of the drug. I do hope proper research has been conducted and the drug company hasn’t “fudged” the results. Here’s hoping the evidence holds up to thorough scrutiny!

Its quite interesting that the major determinant of debate around this drug is the various theoreticians who either buy the Tau or AB theory of Alzheimer's. Likely they aren't mutually exclusive, but some top researchers treat them as so.

The significance here is that current treatments can only slow the progression of the disease (eg memantine) however this sounds like it can restore cognitive function

I have been following the story of this drug. It is big pharma that came out with it. It doesn't cure it, and it is questionable if it actually does anything at all. Big pharma will make big money because people will take this drug for the rest of their lives.

Drugs like Ivermectin has completely cured a number of diseases in Africa. As for Big Pharma in this case it was a cooperation between American and Japanese scientists. Which normally would be competing with each other. Does the amyloid MRI brain scans lie?

@@SI-ln6tc actually, from what I have read, the two companies are huge donors to the Alzheimer's Association, and the Alzheimer's Association is one of the reasons the drug got approved (they "begged" the FDA to do it on behalf of patients without disclosing the money from Biogen and the other company). The Alzheimer's association deleted a rough draft from scientists suggesting that the drug didn't work. Something seems fishy to me.

This is absolutely terrific news. So glad that the new piece of pioneering medicine has finally actually been approved. It may not be 100% effective, but any treatment is better than none, and those who say otherwise they’re just standing in the way of people actually having a better quality of life. It’s been way too long in the making but now people can at least start to benefit, even if it is for some only in small ways, in getting their lives back.

We've seen this time and again with other drugs, where approval is rushed through, and then potentially millions of people are harmed at the cost of billions - Rofecoxib, for example. Aducanumab hasn't been proven to be both safe and effective, but I don't think that's important for the manufacturer, which is ultimately interested in its bottom line and shareholder dividends.

If the accumulated amyloid protein can be reduced, it is possible to treat dementia as well as suppress its progression. This is a very desirable drug. I hope that the drug will be approved quickly in Japan, where the aging of the population is a problem, and that research will proceed.

I wish it did work but I am very skeptical. The original pilot study showed that it didn't work, and likely did more harm than good. It wasn't new data that lead to the approval of the drug, but simply a "re-interpretation" of it. The company that developed the drug did invest lots of money in that type of research. If you ask me, it is more to help big pharma than patients. Also, there is new evidence since 2018 that Alzheimer's is caused by bacteria and not by amyloid.

True but anyone can get it by their 50s I used to think only old people got it but many get it super young let’s hope things improve by then also I encourage you to find this organizations researching for alz and fund them after doing your research.

I have seen Vitamin-B is a bit helpful against Alzheimer . My mother is having tremor or shaking of the right hand which is symptom of it. When she regularly use vitamin-B in her diet and through suppliments, I have observed a significant drop-down in hand shaking symptom. Whenever there is a pause or reduction in vitamin-B the problem increases again.

Alzheimer is a horrible disease, my grandpa died of late stage in 2017, not only his brain shrunk in size, the only functioning organs before he died was just the heart and lungs. He needed tubes insert all over him just to ingest and excrete, there’s no way for anyone to live like this.

There have been SO MANY failed attempts at Alzheimer’s drugs. Some financial analysts will subtract the value of such Alzheimer’s drugs from stock prices of drug companies. Why? Simply because it seems better to afford failure.

It's shocking when governments by permitting cigarettes, are knowingly endangering our lives through 2nd & 3rd-hand smoking as well as fossil fuel emissions. The problem is that removing those amaloid plaques is not preventing the neurodegeneration. Or in other words: this could be like all other Alzheimer's medicine: it might only slow down the progression of the disease or help momentarily, but the true cause (or causes) of Alzheimers are still far from beeing understood. But it could be that this stuff also has some other properties that do cure the real cause of the disease and thus help anyway. Well, I am glad that it got approved as for the patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease, it's better to try than doing nothing. There are various links that promote the theory of Alzheimer's beeing an autoimmune disease. Just like with some other autoimmune conditions, sometimes to treat the disease, it is enough to mitigate a certain immune response (here: the formation of antimicrobial amloid plaques). But it's more of a treatment than a healing. But autoimmunity and chronic inflamatory conditions are the pink elephant in the room no one likes to talk about because of how bad our understanding of them is. But I am sure that with things like next-generation sequenzing, microbiome research and artificial intelligence data analyzing, a lot will become clear in the next decade.

The side effects don’t outweigh the potential. If it causes cancer that’s ok as it usually takes 30 years to form from medication. This will seriously extend the quality, and quantity of life of millions of people

I agree with Dr Maria that people should have the right to access this treatment while there is still time, and they meet these criteria. If it is safe to administer and more importantly efficacious in targeting the root cause of AD, we should support the cause and not deny the opportunity of better health and improved quality of life to those in need. 💙

What's confusing is how can people who don't have amyloid plaques in their scans still be said to have Alzheimer's dementia if that's seen as the key biomarker.If in fact it isn't amyloid then how would the limited but clearly real success of this treatment be explained as it works by reducing the plaques.

Alzheimer's is not caused by amyloid, that's is just an affect and is dismissed in large. Tau protein plays a more important role not in just Alzheimer's but other neuro disease like Parkinson's too

Actually, its not either protein. They are both part of the immune system, and are symptoms of the disease. The actual cause of the disease is an infection. This is just a victory for Big Pharma.

That's just it, the original pilot data wasn't good, and there is no new data, just a "reinterpretation" of it. The company that developed the drug invested lots of money in that type of research over the years, so if you ask me, it has big pharma written all over it.

This is currently the last ditch effort available for anyone that have the disease, people that are dying a slow, painful (physical, mental, & emotional) death, families that have to witness the whole process, watching their loves one slowly drifting way. As long there is no serious side effect that make people even more sick/die quicker, let people use it. Any success case is a win for humanity. Government only need to make sure it's priced reasonably so no party can take advantage profiting excessively.
