I was a paratrooper back in the day. One time i caught a "hop" on an air force plane. (A "hop" was sort of a free flight for personal purposes.) Anyway, an Air Force officer came back to give me a safety briefing. He asked me, "Have you ever flown on an Air Force flight, before?" I answered, "Yes. Many times. I've just never landed in one." He looked at my chest, saw my airborne wings, and said, "We'll try to make this a first for you."

4:01 it's impressive how they just get out of the door in a single file like that, almost like they're just going through a doorway casually. I usually jump 1-2 times a week. It is an everyday thing really. Static line jumps are at super low altitudes like 800-1200ft...if your main chute doesn’t deploy you pretty much have no time to pull your reserve. So pull that shit if you even think there’s a chance you’re falling too fast. It’s pretty fun actually. Probably the best feeling you’ll ever have after your 1st jump.

that two second difference makes a huge difference. My unit was one of the first ones to use them as they were coming out and we had people popping the reserve cause they were use to the 4 second drop. Falling six is a long ass time and covered a lot of space. Bulkier chute and bigger reserve made everything that more uncomfortable. The only good thing out of it was that it made landing a bit smoother.

He was on the Invasion of Sicily, D-Day, Operation Market Garden, Battle of The Bulge, and even went to a German concentration camp in Czechoslovakia towards the end of the war. This brings back good and bad memories. I was in the 82nd airborne division also I was a Ranger. It’s fun when you jumped in a non combat zone. When you jump in Iraq or Afghanistan that is a different story. I lost 3 of my brothers in arms at the war. Now a day my body is paying the price for all those jumps and deployments. Proud to be a former airborne Ranger.

I was a paratrooper with 504 AIR in the 82nd between 1954 and 1956. I used to volunteer for extra jumps because it was the only time you were free from harassment. We used to sing "Gory, gory what a helluva way to die" on the way to the drop. In those days we flew in C-119s and were starting to use C-124. The called them Old Shakies because the rattled so much, and the slipstream knocked you around when you left the A/C. 10 years later I was a C-130 navigator, the one who plots the drop and turns on the green light. It was fun to mingle with the troopers on the way to the DZ and swap stories with them. I also felt that it was reassuring for them to know that a fellow trooper was handling the logistics of the drop.

This isn't all that bad it's a day time with what looks like little to no wind. You get in the middle of the line and you kind of get pushed out with the flow of guys. You come to the door hand off your cord take a left or right depending what side of the plane your on and when you get the end of the ramp give a little hop, then it's chin to chest, arms tight at your sides legs together and a slight bend in your back count to 4, you don't feel the opening shock form your main by 4 pull your reserve. and that's it in a nut shell. Your main opens and you float down to earth like a feather, just steer way form the bigger rock on the ground the best you can.

I don't know if mrrossn has jumped or not, but he's right that it's less terrifying than it looks. I've done 4 static line jumps like this, except non-military, where you have to sit in the doorway of the Cessna, then step out onto the top of the landing gear, reach both hands (1 at a time) out to the wing strut. Then when the jumpmaster says GO, you take a big sideways leap out into the air. You would not want to do it without any ground training, but after you've practiced all the moves, and the "Pull reserve chute?" decision, and some jumps off a picnic table to figure out your footing, it's OK.

Nothing better than being Airborne in Peace time. Nice fun jumps, good altitude and the chance to get another line written up in your log book. Try being a Rhodesian Light Infantry soldier in the 1975 - 1979 conflict. 30, 40 or so operational jumps going out the door of a C47 with a P10 chute on your back at 450/500ft, throwing 20 guys out the door in 13 seconds. One particular stick in 2 Cdo jumped into action twice in a day. That’s why we are still legendary 40 years later. “death from the Sky - RLI”. Respect to all those around the world who wear those converted wings from an old para from a world that time should never forget.💪💪🪂🪂

It's kinda cool to see military jumps come full circle with side door exits like this. They used side doors on C-47 Dakotas back in WWII (ala Band of Brothers), then they went to rear cargo doors for C-130 Hercules and C-5 Galaxies, but here they are squirting out the side again on C-17 Globemasters. Although I imagine they can still jump right out the same door en masse that they came in through.

My father served in the 82nd, served in Vietnam and was on standby for anything to erupt in the Cuban Missile Crisis. Glad to see our boys are still in the air. All the way!

Cotton Mouth because we are in the single most peaceful time in the history of the world and the US keeps ruining it. We are the most powerful force on the planet why the FUCK are we killing civilians, radicalizing their families into ISIS and shit and then killing them too? What threat do they pose to us?

These guy's are the ultimate bad asses. True American heros. Not some dork that bounces or throws a fricking ball around getting paid literally millions of dollars a year for playing a fricking kids game. These men and woman deserve the respect and admiration of the entire nation. 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👍

Almost did the same thing. After that when I was all set to land I would look forward and close my eyes. That stopped my reaching with my toes in anticipation. Airborne!

I'm digging the unit patch for 8th Airlift Squadron! I've always been a fan of unit patches created by the sarcastic assholes as they always bring humor into it!

BLWN GT 1 During WWII, most unit designs were created by Disney's artists. The Flying Tigers' patch is a perfect example of their work.
