Earlier this week, a Russian early warning radar installation was hit by unidentified projectiles, which Ukrainian military intelligence claimed were launched by Ukrainian drones. The attack, approximately 1,800 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, signals a significant development in Ukraine's ongoing conflict with Russia.
In this episode of The Grand Strategy with Major (Retd) GD Bakshi, he talks about Ukraine's strategy of increasingly targeting sites within Russia. He notes how these attacks were sporadic and low-key but have since become more frequent and bold, including drone strikes in Moscow and cross-border raids by paramilitary groups. Despite these efforts, Ukraine has faced restrictions preventing it from utilizing its Western-supplied arsenal to conduct deeper and more substantial attacks inside Russia.
On May 30, the United States, along with more than a dozen NATO allies, signaled a shift in policy by granting Ukraine limited permission to strike certain targets inside Russia. This change allows Ukraine to use short-range missiles from HIMARS launchers and artillery to hit command-and-control posts, arms depots, and other military targets related to the ongoing Kharkiv offensive. However, Ukraine remains barred from using longer-range ATACMS missiles against targets inside Russia.

The initial attack on radar facilities in Armavir was two drones that crashed into administrative buildings. Photos of the damage were published on Ukrainian websites. Subsequent attack on Armavir was thwarted, according to the regional governor. Obviously that was also aimed at the radar. There was one drone hitting radar in Orsk, but no source has claimed that it would have been put out of action.

I'm certain that Russia would have reacted furiously if their early warning system had been seriously compromised. These long-range drones have so far been garage-built hobbyist projects. Not like the marine drones that have sunk Russian warships. OTH radars, on the other hand, are pretty hefty structures.

I like General Bakshi and I agree with most of his assessments. But people seem to forget, when Russia invaded the Ukraine, it was supposed to be a “3 day” war. And Russia was expected to steamroll Ukraine in a matter of days. We are now 2 1/2 years into the war. So if and when Russia declares victory, one must wonder , at what cost? Is this really a victory? Don’t misunderstand me. I’m under no illusions that the Russians do not have the upper hand at this time. They certainly do. But considering the size of both armies, the Russians should’ve put this thing to bed long ago. Had the Ukrainians had better air power, they would’ve sent the Russians back home. Also, people seem to forget the turmoil that has been caused within Russia. Especially with the Prigozhin episode where he and his mercenary army marched on Moscow. His (Prigozhin) mistake was not to finish the march. If you’re going to aim for the king, do not miss. And Prigozhin missed. So again, at what cost will Russia declare victory? I’m an American citizen. And I do not agree with this war with Russia. I would prefer we have Russia as an ally. Like we did in WW2. I’m not happy with my government and them sending all of our tax dollars to fight a senseless war. But I am not so naive that I don’t understand the U.S’s strategy. It is simply to weaken Russia at the expense of Ukraine. And as much as I don’t like it, they are indeed achieving this goal. I would prefer peace and prosperity for all. But Biden and the democrats are hell bent on war. Let’s just hope it doesn’t escalate to WW3. Hopefully Trump will be elected and he ends this senseless killing. America used to be the envy of the world, now it seems we are the enemy of the world. Not a good look for us. Let’s hope Trump wins and makes America great again 👍🏻. Thank you General. 🫡

General you fail to understand that Russia's initial lightening success in the war is now over. Russia has not captured much territory ever since the Himars were supplied to Ukraine and that was the turning point. Even if Russia manufactures 3 million shells per year they are not able to stockpile them near the battlefield due to Himars.
