Great video. You missed one interesting detail on New Mexico. At the time of her last Kamikaze and bomb hit in ‘45 she was serving as the Fifth Fleet Flagship. Admiral Raymond Spruance having shifted his flag to her after his beloved USS Indianapolis took a kamikaze hit. After the attack on New Mexico everyone panicked. They could not find Spruance. He had gone out for his daily exercise power walking around the ship. They desperately sent crewman searching everywhere while fearing the worst. They finally found him, manning a firehose with the DC teams.

One little coincidence I always found amusing was that the hull designations for the two battleships named USS Idaho were BB-24 and BB-42. That the second Idaho wasn't even originally planned to be built but was made possible by the sale of the first is poetic icing on the cake and why it's my favorite battleships. (It's also the state I was born in, so there's a little bias there too)

The "armor-piercing bombs" were adapted 16.1" armor-piercing shells (the caliber used by Nagato and Mutsu). These were larger than the caliber against which Pennsylvania and Tennessee class BBs were armored, and they hit vertically rather than diagonally (as the deck armor was designed for).

The Mississippi was a beast. My father in law served on her for 15 years. She should have been saved for history’s sake. She had plenty of shore line in the Mississippi Gulf Coast to have been placed at but no one fought for her, what a shame for an 8 star battle ship.

I guess I got the first comment here. Great video going through the bulk of the American Standard-type battleships. I don't know if you have heard, but roughly 2 and a half months ago, the last survivor of the USS Arizona passed away. But the bright side is, he has been reunited with his brothers in the afterlife. That aside, out of all of the Standard-type battleships salvaged after Pear Harbor, Tennessee, California and West Virginia were all rebuilt basically as new vessels. I kind of like their modernized configuration, of course, that does mean they couldn't traverse the Panama Canal, but it is what it is. But seriously, the Navy should've saved Navada, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, California and West Virginia from either Operation Crossroads or being scraped. The bridge between Texas and North Carolina would've made it more complete in my opinion. Also, the rich history behind the Pearl Harbor veterans is best shown in person rather than in words. Is it a crime they didn't even think to preserve at least one Standard-type battleship?
@svgproductions72
@svgproductions72 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for you comment! I did hear about that, it is very sad, but this is just the reality of time. The “standards” have become some of my favorites to read about, especially since they all had various looks from their rebuilds. Personally, Nevada is one of my favorites, and it’s a shame none were saved. But unfortunately at the time preserving these vessels wasn’t seen as an important thing
@russelljohnson6267

I believe, there was an effort to preserve the USS Tennessee as a museum in her namesake state but this ultimately fell through when it was realized that her draft was going to be tw deep to get that far upriver without first dredging the riverbed which would have only added to the already expensive project.
@NFS_Challenger54
@NFS_Challenger54 2 ай бұрын
@@russelljohnson6267 Uh correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Tennessee a land-locked state? I don't think there are any major avenues of water from either the ocean or the Gulf that feed into or out of the state that would support a battleship like USS Tennessee.
@russelljohnson6267
@russelljohnson6267 2 ай бұрын
@@NFS_Challenger54 The Mississippi River goes from the gulf between Mississippi and Louisiana all the way up to Iowa including a shoreline in Tennessee. However you are correct that as i stated in my original comment it is not deep enough to support a battleship that far upriver without first dredging the riverbed. This extra expense is what ultimately prevented the ship from being preserved as planned.
@NFS_Challenger54
@NFS_Challenger54 2 ай бұрын
@@russelljohnson6267 I did get that. The cost would be astronomical. Pus you also have to add in each mile for dredging out a river. That's outlandish amounts of money. I can see a coastline state or a state with large water ways linking to the ocean trying to get their hands on Tennessee, but not the ship's namesake or any other land-lock state.

In regard to the standard battleships, I'm partial to the aesthetics of the New Mexico class. At the start of the war they were the most "modern looking," similar to fast battleships. They were in wide contrast to the tripod masts on the Nevada and Pennsylvania classes or the "basket" masts on the Tennessee and Colorado classes. Although Tennessee, California and West Virginia looked pretty good after their refits 😎

Personally, I find the 1930s configurations of the Pennsylvania class to be absolutely gorgeous along with their older sisters in the Nevada class. The double tripod masts just look perfect for those ships. It’s absolute crime that neither Pennsylvania nor Nevada were preserved considering their historical significance and also being sisters of the only Dec. 7 battleships that were total loses.

These classes are examples of excellence in preparation for the last war. By '43 they were useful for some variably effective shore bombardment in support of amphibious operations, and local AA in the same types of operations. Perhaps their greatest contribution was to confirm Japanese commitment to investment in fighting the last war themselves. Of course to some extent the U.S. did the same, with the Iowa class (and to lesser extent with the Alaska). But then the U.S. could afford to invest in both the 'last war' with BBs and in the current war with CV and escort construction. Japan could not, and every Riin, every ounce of steel and drop of oil they allocated to BBs contributed to their eventual defeat. Their psychological appeal (and arguable effectiveness in that capacity) persisted well in to the 1980s, with BBs scattering large caliber shells into the hills of coastal Korea and the Chouf Mountains of Lebanon. The tactical effectiveness of these is, to say the least, questionable. But they certainly were socially and, perhaps politically, impressive. These ships remind me of Mark Twain's remark "Thunder is good. Thunder is impressive. But it's lightening that does the work." It's worth noting that at Surigao Strait by the time the BB 'battle line' opened up the IJN units had already been effectively destroyed by TMBs and DDs and all the BBs did was to pulverize what were already, effectively, wrecks.

@@brianfiebig7403 so I did my script writing for the Colorados already, let me revisit it and see if i put a heavier focus on their action at Surigao Strait, I appreciate you bringing this up. My surface level thought on the differences of Tenn. and Colorado classes is that they just have 16 inch guns, the design didn’t change much if I remember correctly

@@svgproductions72 My understanding is essentially the same, the 4 Colorados (Washington was stopped and scraped by treaty) were repeat Tennessees with adjustments for 16" main battery. At Surigao, West Virginia made contact at something like 22 miles and opened fire at 12 miles, scoring a first salvo hit on Yamashiro. Tennessee and California followed. Maryland was having radar problems and built her fire control solution from the splashes of the other ships then fired 6 or 7 salvos in the same time as the 14" ships fired 6 despite the late start.

I know, I know, it goes against the "conventional wisdom" of the time, but I still wish the USN omitted the casemate guns entirely, since the BBs never operated alone in such a manner that necessitated them, and the weight could have gone to more AA guns, and improved underwater protection...
