Subic Bay, discovered in 1572 by Spanish explorer Juan de Salcedo, has been a geopolitical linchpin in the Asia-Pacific for centuries. From its transformation into a strategic naval base during Spanish rule, its acquisition by the U.S. post the Spanish-American War, and its dominance during World Wars, the bay has navigated global power dynamics. Faced with environmental challenges like the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption and geopolitical shifts, such as the U.S. Navy's exit and China's rise in the South China Sea, Subic Bay has continually reinvented itself. Now, with the Visiting Forces Agreement, Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement, and investments from entities like Cerberus Capital Management, it remains crucial in the ongoing great power competition. This video delves into Subic Bay's storied past, its strategic importance, and its potential role in future global geopolitics including the US Military Revival of Naval Base to counter China dominance. I remember Subic Bay, and the Naval Repair Facility there, when the carrier I was on, USS KITTY HAWK (CVA-63), used it as our home port between line periods on Yankee Station in the Tonkin Gulf. Olongapo City, and Grande Isle, where we enlisteds were able to enjoy R&R there, still have many memories of the place, long after being there in 1970 - 71.

@WhiteTiger5151, thank you for sharing your personal connection with Subic Bay and the USS KITTY HAWK. It's always humbling and insightful to hear firsthand experiences from those who have served. Hi, thanks for the comment made. My most vivid recollection was of the crushing poverty of the local people in Olongapo, the young women and men who haunted the clubs just across the Olongapo River, just outside the gate of the Subic base, nothing but clubs on both sides of the street, and further down where it split into two streets. Back then the official rate of exchange of peso to dollar was 20:1 and since then their money is worth even less, but from what I've heard that is about to change for the better, and their economy.

Trabaho ng Philippine coast guard and navy yang tinutukoy mo. Face it, hindi natin kaya mag-isa

@@insectslayer1374 What firing the first shot are you talking about? Nananagiinip ka sa sinasabi mong firing the fist shot lose. China is using its big vessels and water hoses without firing a shot to prevent the Filipino fishermen from fishing or any Philippine vessel in the Philippines EEZ . China without firing a shot becomes the de facto owner of the Philippines EEZ. HIndi nga ma-utilize ng Philippine govt ang mga US warships para man lang harangin or gumawa ng blockade sa WPS para hindi makapasok ang mga Chinese fishing vessels dito. Mauutusan ba or nag-request man lang ba si PBBM na tumulong ang US navy para masawata ang intrusions ng Chinese vessels sa Philippine territory. China will invade the Philippines without firing a shot and the US Navy will just watch China do it. So ano pakinabang sa US Navy?

Subic Bay falling into the hands of China would have spelled disaster for the Philippines and the entire Indo-Pacific region. In addition to its significance as the major naval base in Southeast Asia, Subic is strategically critical to protecting international shipping lanes. This was a move that had to be done for both the economic and national security interests of the Philippines, US, and allies in the region.

Just imagine if these bases are still in Philippines. Aside from the rent from the bases, there is also no need to worry about acquiring those expensive equipment for the armed forces. International security will be taken care of by the US. Philippines armed forces can just offer support and worry about local security. As for the moral implications in keeping the bases, rules can be rethink and adjusted. A more strict execution of the rules can be negotiated with the US government. Everything will just be on how much the Philippine government can be strict in implementing and executing the rules.

I would disagree, the closing of the bases was not because of those protests, the protests were highlighted to justify the doubling of the rent, USA just said no and left. The Philippines government ended up with egg on their face when the volcano went off, and USA left early because of it. The Philippines government destroyed a unnatural upper middle class in Angeles and Olongapo. Filipino workers making USA pay scale lost their jobs, lots of them. The idiot protesters in Manila didn't care, but the government did, the president at the time was very disappointed. She realized her mistake , 2 empty bases full of ash, billions in salary and rent lost, and a military of her own unprepared for any mission.

@@donarmstrong2182 Philippine Senators were the ones who voted for the US to leave. When the bases were there, Filipinos were paid in USD. Unlike companies from Korea and other countries who set up shop as the US pullout, they cheated the locals by paying them local pesos.

@@curtisake7431 oh, I did not mean to imply it was all the USA decision to leave, the Filipinos did vote them out AT THE CURRENT RENT, the USA could have stayed if they paid up. The Filipinos never dreamed the USA would hold out based on money. The USA was in a base closing mood at that time, remember BRAC, the DOD could not justify the cost of Olongapo and Clark, with Japan and south Korean bases being so costly. The navy was closing big bases in the USA, like Pease AFB and Philidelphia shipyard. Of course china was no threat in 1990.

@@donarmstrong2182 I totally agree. I think with the volcano blowing up certainly didn't help either. I was stationed at Subic with the Marines from 1986 to 1989. I have very fond memories of my time there. I lived in the Philippines from 2012 to 2016. Of that time, in Olongapo from 2013 to 2014. I have a very special place in my heart for Filipinos.

Only few deep water ports can be used by US ships. Subic Bay (PH) and Cam Ranh Bay (in Vietnam) are among them. I think there was a $1-B plan to dredge Guam as a deep water port to replace Subic but this plan was abandoned. Hopefully, Subic can be returned to the US Navy. That will open up another base from which to interdict a PLA invasion of Taiwan.

There are about 23 U.S. bases in Japan. And the largest around the world is the Kadena in Okinawa. Philippines has none! We only have the VFA. In my opinion, we need the presence of a strong allied force to protect our interest. It gives us the security we need. It gives foreign investors the feeling of security, too. The reason foreign investors left the Philippines after the late Marcos administration was ousted from power a few years ago was the lack of a strong military presence and that made it seem like the security of their investments is also compromised!
